The only Japanese band I still listen to on a regular basis is Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. I doubt anybody's heard of them, though.

Radwimps are one of a kind, but I sort of out-grew them when I was in high school. One rock band that is consistently great is Blue Hearts.

Other than that, I usually keep to anime and doujin music. Sound Horizon is my favorite, but currently I'm addicted to the score for Umineko No Naku Koro Ni.

Well, if we did that, about 90% of this thread wouldn't be here. I've said many times before, there's a fairly large gap between those who like music from Japan, and those who like music from anime. Kind of sad, especially when they're talking about great bands without know anything about them.

Now I'll just throw out a couple of my favorites (my taste is pretty simple).

AKFG have always been a mainstay with me, as their songs are both brilliant and memorable. Their music has a lot of emotion and range, and they've been around for quite a while so you can really listen to how they've evolved as a band. Great stuff. Delve into any of World World and you're in for a treat.

Ellegarden is another group that I've really enjoyed lately. They write some of the most contagious Punk/Pop Rock stuff you'll ever hear, and they do properly written/pronounced songs in English (not Engrish) as well as Japanese. I adore Salamander and Niji.

Art-School is another nice starter group to really get you into good Japanese bands. Lead singer (Kino..something or other) has great control with his voice at low ranges, but kinda falls flat higher up. Still, the songs are nice, light and easy on the ears. Personal favorite song to check out is 1995. Missing's good too.

Yikes. You guys hear one song from a short lived Bleach ending and it's "great"..

Oh just throwing another one out there that I've had running through my playlists lately; Number Girl. I'm personally not some of their heavier, almost metal-ish rock sounds, but these guys are real good. They're incredibly versatile and the vocals are really nice. This is only from one album's worth of listening though.

X-Japan. They're the only great J-Rock band I know of. Dunno if any of their songs appear in an anime but their songs are beautiful.

@daft: They make me angry too. One good song for an anime OP & they're God. If they had seen the Akagi ending song their opinion would change so quick.

L-Arc is garbage now. Their anime OP's have been really bad. Moribito was terrible, Gundam 00 was terrible, & anything else has been terrible.

I agree. WTF happened to L'arc?! What happened to the good ol' days of "STAY AWAY" or "Driver's High" (their only good anime opening)? Unfortunately, they've fallen into the trap that is "pop is more popular than rock". "Drink It Down" is nothing compared to some of their first songs.

Also MTH. I don't understand the obsession with them. In my opinion, they're pretty sloppy. Their music is not nice to the ear.

Driver's High was used as an anime OP? That use to be my favorite song by them.

As for what happened to them, I'd say Hyde's ego did a good number. He really overestimates himself, even despite the fact that he can't actually sing.

Yes actually. I hate to admit this and I know people are going to use this against me, but I only got into L'arc en Ciel because I watched GTO and saw that as one of the openings. However, that WAS a very long time ago. Four years ago I think.

Thank you! Once Hyde went solo, I just rolled my eyes. That album, "FAITH", was quite possibly one of the most dreadful things I had heard. And, it was religious. I have no problem with religion, I just don't want it in my music. I still listen to L'arc en Ciel, and I even still enjoy it, but they've definitely dropped in my opinion. It's unfortunate, because they really used to be a good band.

Epic band. I wasn't all too impressed with their last release, the ILLMATIC BABY ep, but most of their fanbase seems to like it. I much more liked their earlier works, and Missing remains my favorite album from them, though "Freesia" is my favorite song, with "Lost in the Air" in a close second.

I don't mean his solo thing was bad. I thought FAITH was a pretty solid album, all-in-all. I mean he actually cannot sing. He's a bad singer. Most of his live performances are terrible. Often in television broadcast they'll use computers on his voice, and overall he can only does a decent performance about 10% of the time.

That's true, but you know, a lot of the music industry is like that. What's it called again? Auto-tuning, or something like that. Hey, at least he's not lip-syncing. Now that would be shameful XD! But I do agree.
