    Default August 16 lunar eclipse

Just now, as I was taking a cancer-stick break outside, I saw the moon. It was just above the horizon and blood red as a consequence. I figured it was a lunar eclipse, so I checked the wikipedia article on lunar eclipses. A lunar eclipse is scheduled in three days (August 16). I don't know if it was just the horizon this time, or if I could somehow see it earlier living closer to the pole. Whatever the cause, it was cool stuff.

So, since one is coming up in just a few days, I figured I'd inform people about it. It's visible in most of Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, Australia, Oceania and the very east-most part of North America.

It's mostly the map at the bottom I figured you could make sense of. The rest is just astrophysics mumbo jumbo no sane person can make heads nor tails of.

Another eclipse Michigan doesn't get to see -_- I've only seen one in my life and that was like... earlier this year I think. My state is usually out of range of most eclipses anyway.

I'm basically on the East Coast of the US, so I guess I'll luck out. If I remember.

Apparently, there was a solar eclipse on the 1st of August, too - mostly visible over Russia and China, only partially in Europe in the Americas. I missed that one... iCal didn't let me know until a few days after the eclipse, because my computer clock has been resetting itself a lot lately (as a result of a repeatedly blowing fuse - too many air conditioners). Wouldn't have seen much, anyway.

Still, I'll try to take more precautions not to miss this lunar eclipse; either one seems like a memorable moment.

Solar Eclipses are better. I have only seen half of one of those as I live in the South-East. Scotland got to see the whole cover...¬_¬

It is you. Lunar eclipses are recurring phenomenon, they usually occur once or twice every year. With some mathematics you can calculate when they will happen. For lazy people, someone has made a list of lunar eclipses from the 16th century all the way to the 25th century on wikipedia.

I prefer lunar eclipses to solar ones because it's less fuss to watch them. You don't risk burning your eyes to a smoldering cinder by not using the proper viewing techniques and whatnot.

I was young at the time, so that very well could have happened to me if it were not for the sun still showing half itself. I thought that I would be safe just by covering my eyes with my thin T-shirt so that I could still see it. I am lucky that I was not blinded that day.

I remember the last one we had in Australia, we all went outside of work to watch it. Quite disapointing, but I suppose I can say I saw a Lunar Eclipse.

It's only reasonably impressive if you actually see the full eclipse. A partial lunar eclipse is nothing to write home to mom about.
