Long distance/internet relationships.

What do you think of long distance/internet relationships? Have you been in one? Do they work?

I know someone who met her boyfriend on a chat room and now they've been dating for almost two years. They live miles apart (opposite ends of the country almost) yet still seem to be working out.

As for me, well I met someone over myspace once. We ended up talking for hours on end each night for a long time on msn, so I ended up liking him. But nothing ever came out of it apart from us admitting we liked each other :/ But there wasn't any 'boyfriend, girlfriend' stuff going on. It's a shame sometimes that we live so far apart, but I wouldn't want the hassle of having a boyfriend so far away.

So, what do you think of long distance/internet relationships? Have you been in one? Do they work?

I hate online relationships for the most part because you don't truely know the person on the other computer. Find one you can touch.
I have never and prolly will never date over the internet unless they lived close to me.................... but I still highly doubt it, because I just don't like to date people in real life too, I just got sick of it.

No offense to people that do date online, but I agree. I also kind of think its a bit... shallow? I don't know if its the right word for it, but oh well... I've never actually dated online or in real life for that matter, but if I were to date, I would choose real life dating. Like Jake-sama said, I'd want to be able to touch them, smile at them, be in the same room even. It makes those moments seem more real as opposed to Internet/webcam dating...

Yeah. It happens. Some people even get married from meeting online initially.
As for do they work, well that's depends on what kind of people they are. If they're the type that needs to touch the other person, then no I don't think it will work. But if they're the type that is interested more in how the person reacts to certain conversations then I'd say chances are better.
I think in some ways people can be more open online than in RL. It's also can be easier to approach people.
Though you do meet people who aren't who they say they are. I think this video sums up a lot what happens online nowadays.

I've been in an online relationship before, but it was only due to a online RPG. I was young and impressionable, and I thought that if I stay here long enough, we'll be able to meet one day. <---- gaah...I blame you Disney! >/

Didn't happened, and we ended it after nearly 1 together. >>; It really does suck, when you do live miles away from each other. I mean, when you get older and have enough money to travel, then its ok to give it a try. Just make sure that person is truly what they said they are. D:

I find statements on whether this-or-that type of relationship ever really can work no better than astrology. Everyone is different. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. The only thing that is for damn sure is that you can't make blanket statements in either direction.

I did crush on this boy when i was at my old RPG site but yeah... that's old.

But when will you meet them? And how do you know they are who they say they are? Most likely it wouldn't work out for me cause I like actually talking to people, not just typing. It would end up being no point to it for me. Though for other people it may work fine.

I don't really like internet relationships, because you really don't know who is on the other side. They pretty much could make-up anything about themselves, and you wouldn't know. I prefer real relationships with people.

I personally don't think that long distance relationships work, in the long run. I've seen a lot of people, from my school, who have tried to be in a relationship, when their boyfriend/girlfriend is off at college. I think that there is a certain point where you get tired of being far away form each other. Especially at college, you'd probably find someone else or your opinions/views would change.

I had one long-distance relationship, it lasted a few months. The guy lives in another town, about 300km from my hometown. We met over some phone-chat thing, whatever. We were talking on a phone and text messaging everyday. He came to my town once, so we met and all. But I broke up with him soon after because I had enough of it; it's pretty exhausting, to keep a relationship like that. He was hurt, but we stayed in touch and few months after he found a new girlfriend whom he's still with and they're very happy. The end. ^^

Sure, it happens that people fell in love via Internet. After all, we meet new people on forums, Myspace, Facebook, blablablah etc. almost everyday. Idk, it doesn't always have to mean that you can't meet someone in real life, it just happens. My friend met her boyfriend via blogging and they're together 4 months now. He lives in another town, not so far away from us. And it's working out fine for them! They see each other every or every second weekend, he comes here or she goes there. Many people that live in the same town see each other only on weekends.

Anyway, sure you can't be sure who's the person behind the screen and how's he/she like in person, but that's on the individual to decide. Also, one should try to control his feelings... tho that's almost impossible, but still. If I meet someone from another country and there's 00,01% chance for us to actually meet, no matter how great he is, I won't fell for him. Or at least I'll try. That's just torture. But yeah, you never know and caution is inevitable.

If it's just talking to a person online(and just on the phone as well) as a relationship and not ever meeting them, I think that's pretty irritating for me.
I need to see the person 2-5 days a week.
No more then 5, cause I need my "me" time too.

I had an online relationshop once when I was like 12 online, and then one day the person stopped going online so I assumed we broke up lol.

I have met, dated, and gone out with people online and then met them in real life.
If your going to met someone in real life, make sure you have talken to them for awhile and use common sense.

Isn't that what love is? Can love be untouchable. not atainable. Someone believe in God. They can't touch him, see him, smell him, or be with him but they believe that he is there. Love can't be measured in the things you do together "for real".

Hate is a strong word too. So how could people hate George Bush without ever meeting him? Yeah, some would say that he ruined the country and there fore hate him. He made such a big impact. People online can do the same. They can make a big impact. A big enough one to make you feel love. You don't need to touch, smell, or see a person to feel hate or love towards them.

I don't believe that all people who do online dating are not sociable. I'm a very sociable person. I've been to more then 10 parties this year, play volleyball like crazy with my friends, hang out at different clubs, and cheer on my other friends at their sports games. I love to talk alot to my friends and hang out. I'm steady with the opposite sex. I've had about 2 people like me but paid no attention because I didn't want to hurt them. I'm a person in one of those relationships. I maybe blindly putting myself out there on the line but I know what happens if it isn't "real".

Whoa, wait a minute, I don't agree with that statement. Well, it may be true that people who internet date under 25 may lack social skills, but as you get older, it gets harder and harder to meet quality people. First of all, you're not in school anymore, and better chance than not you'll end up working a nine to five. There's probably no one at work that you'd want to be seen with after hours, and that's where internet dating comes in.

I've tried it, and I like it, but since I'm one of those busy people over 25, why would I be bothered with some lame dude trying to tie up my time with dumb e-mails and IM's, but would never like to hook up?

By the way, I would try a long distance relationship, simply because that's where I am in life right now. I'm not looking to get married yet, and I don't need some guy trying to tie up all my time.

The only reason people feel pathetic about it is because a vast majority looks down on it. Think of this situation as "coming out". It's hard to say how you met this person because EVERYONE will question you. People will doubt you. I don't feel pathetic. I feel determined. How is this love different? What is love? There is no true answer. If the majority weren't so hypocritical then maybe some of these people won't feel pathetic. But I doubt people in these relationships feel things other then being pathetic. It's still a relationship. How they end up will always be the same. A break up can hurt even if someone doesn't say it. A silly joke can bring a smile across someones face just by being read. The way we feel and think are all psychological responses to society. If not for society we would have no need to feel pathetic.

Having an actual relationship from afar is hard but not impossible....though there is alot more to fight through i.e jealousy etc....some people have such a strong bond to eacch other the distance is nothing but a matter and dont effect them that much >_<

The majority says that online dating is how should i put it, "low'. But even so, some people irl can't even muster the courage to talk to someone and develop a relationship. I admit that I have an internet relationship and going onto my 3rd year. This maybe a bad relation but isn't just like believing in god? Not knowing if there is truth behind all this "love" and person. All you can do is love and trust in the person. They tell you who they are and gain your trust. I think these relationships can work, it's just looked down upon. The minority has no courage to tell the majority how they met their love. It's hard having an internet relationship because it's kept deep down where no one can see the love. It's as good as being alone sometimes. This kind of relationship is confusing and difficult because it feels as if both will get hurt in the end. Being afraid that the one you love will find someone else but hoping that they will so both our longing will perish. Long distance relationships are hard because it's hard to taste the "love" that we want and yearn for.

I don't hate online dating/relationships, but I don't agree with it either. Mainly because I wouldn't ever really know the person until I am past 18 years of age. If I didn't know the person in real life, there would always be a bit of skepticism about whether or not they are who they say they are. And when I were to actually meet them, there is a 50 percent chance I was wrong about their identity and if that were the case I don't know how I'd be able to handle myself. I would probably fall into a deep depression because the person I had met online and "loved" and put up onto a pedestal lied about who he was and seriously let me down.
What I meant before was that it simply was not for me. It may be for some people and they may be able to keep the Internet relationship going. Just not me.

As long as you know that there's going to be a long and tough road ahead of you to be able to keep the relationship without falling apart, then do as you please. My best friend has a long distance thing with her boyfriend/semi-fiancee and they have their problems, but they're still doing great.

Same here my sister had a long distance relationship for 6 years I think. They were off and on but they still return to one another.

Well, only two that I know of have worked out. However, one is a bit rocky at this moment.

But I wouldn't recommend it. I've been in one, and every day was stressful. You can't really tell if the person is telling the truth, even with a webcam. You can't hold the person and the feeling....in my opinion....just isn't there.

So in my opinion, they are a complete waste of time.
