Default A Discussion, based on Discussions

There have been a number of users over the past couple of weeks stating and complaining that their is a lack of thought and ideas behind recent Anime Forum threads. I must say that I myself prefer topics in which I can type a really long answer for part of a decent conversation as opposed to one word or sentence answering questions. Such as "My Favourite Colour" or "Which Toilet Tissue I Prefer".

Therefore I decided to write a discussion thread where we can 'discuss' what we like in a discussion. It can be 'One-Worded Anwer' threads if you really like them that much. This way more users can get a first-hand insight on what types of topics people prefer so that they can post such things in the future. Just a thought though, don't scold me if you disapprove, please.

I prefer discussing things on everyday general knowledge or issues on the world we know today. In threads like that it gives users the chance to write big paragraphs on their thoughts, and reading the thoughts of other people is really interesting and fun. I also like to discuss their ideas and thoughts with them if they seem interesting, even if I disapprove with them or agree. Let us face it, we all have disagreements with other peoples opinions, but that is what makes it a discussion.

What do you like in a discussion? Posting simple and small answers? Or in-depth conversations in which one can really state their mind and thoughts.

And no "being funny" please. Such as saying things like "I disaprove if thredz like ths 1! LOLZ", because no, that is not 'LOL'ing material. And it is answers like that that are degrading our recent topics down to what they are. I (and hopefully some others of you) want to see what people on here prefer to talk about, just for future references. That is all. I was just trying to think of an idea and this is what I came up with. So if you detest my idea then don't post about it in here and PM me about it instead. If that is what you do plan on doing then turn around, and be "funy" elsewhere.

Not sure if anyone will read this titanic post of mine, but nontleless. Thankyou.

The way I see it people come here to AF to find some type of entertainment where they can do silly stuff. People in general may not want to challenge themselves and go into a full out discussion that could lead to a heated debate. It's easier for someone to stay neutral than strive to prove that your POV is better or correct. I try to make long posts but at the same time I'm pretty passive so I don't want to get on someonse bad side. I think people could get in depth about what toilet paper they use, it's just that pretty much no one would want or have a reason to debate or learn something from it.

Titanic posts are beautiful since their are about none.

Well, I do prefer the longer-answer threads, because they actually make your brain think about something for a minute. The smaller-answer thread can be good too, though. It just depends on how much you feel like thinking.

I am greatful that the first post to this thread was a serious one. I appreciate it.

Yes, I know what you mean. If it is worth it, I too like to make a simple answer really long and in-depth. In most cases anyway. It could be because I just love typing, but I also like to write really decent and proper answers. Also, disagreeing with anothers opinion can often be a good thing, because it makes more of a discussion. It does not necessarily need to lead to a flame war, unless ofcourse some people make it that way and the other persons involved take to heart what the detester just stated. It can often go off trail when a troll comes into the conversation too.

Thankyou for reading my very long post.

What kind of threads do I like? Hmm...just about any thread. But I do filter out threads started by one person. Generally, I won't look at the thread if it were started by Mavericker, but depending on the topic depends on if I look at it. If it's about Religion or GITS:SAC...then no. I won't look at it.

    But what type of threads do I like to reply to? Generally, anime that I'm an expert on, like Rurouni Kenshin, or games I'm an expert on like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Xenosaga. The threads like "what's your favorite color" I stray from. o_o;;

However...what was I going to say? XD Oh, the threads like "What "pisses" you off the most about anime" I think shouldn't even exist. Especially on an anime board. Anyway. That's the mind of a Chocobo.

Well, no matter what, there have been and always will be those kinds of threads I'm afraid. It would be nice to have a nice, long discussion on a certain topic where everyone takes things seriously, but then there should be freedom and variety for everyone else who want to have some fun and laughs(as long as it's not against the rules). But it's a good idea overall, I approve

You have just made this thread go 100 miles. Thankyou, that was the kind of answer that I was hoping for.

I agree, although I tend to go into threads started by trolls out of curiousity to see what it is exactly what other users have to say for themselves as part of the discussion. I will sometimes join in, even if it does seem like flaming I do try my best to stick to the basic topic. But if the thread is just getting plain stupid I will either just totally ignore it, or join in and get some good reputation from other users for nailing the troll. I must admit though, those threads created by spammers and other various idiots are quite entertaining to read. It is good to get a couple of them at a time, but not too many as it just gets ridiculous. A lot of users here seem to enjoy posting in them anyway, including myself, despite afterwards stating how much they hate them.

I enjoy having the nonsense threads around because it makes me appreciate serious time a bit more. But I don't appreciate those long-winded posts that could have had the concise-knife help shave off a couple thousand words or so.

As for threads I like, it's not so much about the topic as it is the way it's presented. If the OP is just all "What's your favourite colour? Mine's blue", then of course the rest of the thread will lack thought process. If the thread starts out with an effort, there's more of a chance everyone will follow suit. You can also try to prompt thought process by not titling a thread with a question. A lot of people won't read a post if they think they already know what's in it, so by titling a thread "What's your favourite colour?", everyone will skip to Quick Reply to answer the question that they've already been asked.

For example, this thread. If it was titled "what's your favourite thread topic", and no effort had been put in, it would have been just another 'what's your favourite' thread (and, funny enough, probably get more replies).

i don't really indulge in the "favourite" threads, nor the ones geared towards responding in a short rebuttal. i quite often find them to be boring. :/ and a good number of the one's people keep making are the ones that have already been done far too many times. (tho, version # threads are more tolerable.)

really, i just like to have a good time. its quite obvious that i am a huge jokester. i like threads that i can extract some humor from. but, i also like serious discussion/long winded rebuttal threads. sometimes, i am not in the mood for them, tho.

I like to reply to the ones that actually are RELATEDto ANIME.People on here take everything to seriously and the anime related ones are the ones were there is no chance of being flammed. It's annoying in the Misc. threads when a person who has been here longer than you and has more "presents"and stuff thinks that their opinion is more valid than yours.NO IT ISN'T!The religon threads are looked at more than the unsung:Hello!><

I will admit I write short replies to topics a lot, but that is mostly because of the topic's starting post, or the topic itself.
    My "favortie color" is purple.
"My idole" is alexander the great because..... ect.....
Can you see what the differance in those two are?
    BUT
can you see why a topic like "Do you feel that we should boycot such and such?"
The last one is different because I can give my reply, and a detailed reason why that I know not everyone will agree with so it makes posting worth it, becase if you post on a topic where everyone already agree's or has little disscussion on it there is really little point.
I am tired so sorry if my post made little sense.

In the dictionary, the word "forum" means "A public place or medium for open discussion". Forum is where we discuss and learn things from discussions. I personally prefer discussions on forums, both long or short discussions attracts me.

Question-threads like "about your vacation" or "Relationship between you and your family" attracts me the most. Why? because that's the best way for me to avoid bad reputations or serious flame discussions. Discussions like "gay marriages" or religious issues automatically gives me bad reputation and often leads to unexpected fights because of different opinions that not everyone here would like to hear. I join discussions that gives me easy times to think of what to say instead of complicated discussions that would stab anybody with fire, because not everyone here would like to hear different personal opinions, or go against my religion.

Sometimes i rather join those one-shot threads like "what did you do this summer?" Because it's easier to avoid conflicts. How often would you see people hates you for sleeping in for the whole summer?!

I enjoy epic threads. Failing that, decent discussion or stuff about news is always cool.

I like meta discussions. Which means I like the quoted paragraph. It's a discussion about discussing discussions. What's even worse is that this reply is a discussion about discussions discussing discussions. Making the previous paragraph a discussion discussing discussions about discussing discussions. I could go on saying that we're now at discussion discussing discussions about discussions discussing discussions, but I have already most likely broken the AF record of abstraction, so I'm not going to do that.

From the topics title I thought we had a mobius strip created here. To my surprise the title now makes perfect sense.

So, what threads/topics do I like? I think it was already mentioned that some topic makers I will avoid. I will not name any names, but there are some that as soon as I saw who created it, I nary venture forth. Also If it is nothing I believe I can add anything too, or does not grab my interest I probably will not hit that reply button what-so-ever.
Also there is time constraints. If I feel I have melted my mind enough for the night on a computer I might just skim a few threads and move on.
    But.
There is the flipside. I might, just might check certain thread makers, because of well thought out questions. Also I will check out certain topics on shows or type of shows that I like.

So, I know this is not earth shattering, (or Titanic ) but those are my criteria. Also I like a good long post... as long as there is something I can glean from it's paragraphs.

The paragraph of mine in which you quoted was more or less the way that I set out the rules of my topics. Instead of listing them in numbers or bullet points like most others, I prefer to just write it in one big paragraph and try and keep it sensible, yet a little humourus at the same time. I know it is less formal but this is just a discussion after all.

    Thanks for the migrane.

Indeed. Notice that all of the threads in the "Epic Threads" list all contained some very long disussion posts full of thoughts and opinions on the topic at hand. They were all true and decent discussions.

The Catgirl thread was quite different, because it was, to a certain extent, a failed thread that actually succeeded in the 'discussion' department. Most of the people that took part in that thread did keep mentioning how inappropriate it was, although they still enjoyed the discussion altogether. You could see this from the way that they carried on posting, making the thread a lot more active, humourus, and a better discussion altogether. T'was a weird discussion, but still successful one from specific view points. Otherwise, how would it have gotten to 9 pages in less than a few days? Even threads in the Miscullaneous section take atleast a week and a half to get the same amount of replies that topic did in three days.

Indeed. It is sometimes good to stretch a users good old trolling muscles. Those threads are perfect for that which is why so many AF citizens take part in them. The number of replies that appear in his threads within a short amount of time really shoots up. Hence, decent conversation, even if most of them are just trolling and flaming posts.

It depends on my mood if I'd be posting short and thoughtless answers or if I'd think about it and talk seriously. But if I'm not in a mood for a quality answer, then I simply don't reply to that thread.

I'm glad when someone brings up a good discussion cause they're not as common. Also, interesting hypothetical situations are cool because it makes you think about things you usually don't think about. But that doesn't mean I approved one of the Epic threads about killing kittens or clubbing baby seals. Sorry, but I'm too sensitive for those things. Butchering humans, yes, but not animals; I can't take that, as stupid as it sounds.

Also, I like it when a pleasant, slightly off-topic, but not a spam conversation develops in a certain thread between a few people. It's nice and much more realistic than just sticking on-topic, as it would happen in a face to face conversation; one thing leads to another and before you know it, you don't even know what we're you talking about in the beginning.

I like those "Advice threads" where half the time people give advice, and the other half people say it should be blogged. It's funny because if the first reply is advice, then everyone else gives advice. Otherwise they all repeat the "put in blog" comment.

Yes, exactly! That is why I thanked the first poster in this thread for starting it with a decent answer. Because if the first poster tried on something "funny" and tried spamming or flaming, then this thread would have taken a turn for the worse early and would probably be one big, fat flame right now. Maybe even locked.

Yes, you are exactly right. Alas, that is what a discussion truely is. Sticking to one basic topic all the time will not draw in more attention from other users, whereas if you go a little off the mark then it can change from a simple topic, into a really in-depth conversation revolving around the same topic and as a result draw in more people with other thoughts and ideas.

Lol, I forgot about those. xD But tho some of those threads can be annoying, some are decent and I see no reason why shouldn't we help our fellow member. Besides, even if the poster blogs it, who knows if he/she'll even get a comment, let alone a sound advice.

    I believe so too.

There are two things that I hate to hear in advice topics:
    1) Belongs in blog
The blogs on AF do not do justice. No one actually reads them, let alone comments on them. If you have people reading your blogs, it's because you linked to it like Eris does often or because a friend stumbled upon it out of curiosity. It's like asking a wall for advice.

    2) Shouldn't get advice from AF
There's really nothing wrong with getting advice from AF. Some times there will be unanimous advice which makes a decision more promising. Other times there will be different sides which can help the original poster think things out. As long as you ignore Masali/MP2k/Eris/Balphemous Fiend/... 20 members later.../ sometimes me (though it's obvious when I'm joking) you'll be alright.
