Question What anime/manga has been the biggest letdown/surprise for you?

Ever hear about a series that's supposed to be soooooo good and then didn't live up to your expectations? Ever see a series and think "meh" but it turned out to be one of your favorites?

For me, the biggest dissappointment is Real Bout High School. I heard about it from a friend and thought it sounded cool, so I checked it out. I can't even get through Volume 2. I wanna keep reading and see if it gets better, but it's just terrible. I read a LOT of manga but this thing has a million events happenning in every panel, making it hard to read. Usually, your eyes can easily flow from each panel to the next easily, even in the original format. But I just can't read this thing!

Also, a few characters look exactly the same and don't have very memorable personalities and such so it's hard to know who's who and keep track of names. There are a TON of characters for only 6 volumes too

Every page is just filled to the brim with fan-service. I can usually ignore it if the story's good but it's hard to when everything else is going wrong. And it's not like the ecchi can sell itself in this one, it's just more implied so it's not enough to be able to shun a good plot.

The best surprise for me has been Kodomo no Omocha (AKA "Kodocha" or Child's Play)

This I didn't think was going to be good. It's a series about a bunch of kids, looks like a sleeper...BUT IT'S THE BEST!!

It's the funniest manga AND anime I've ever read/seen. The dubs are also good I think. If you haven't yet I highly reccommend checking it out.

So what is it for you guys?

I belive that Fruits Basket (manga) was the biggest letdown for me. The first couple volumes were really good, but it started to get really uninteresting for me. I really was disappointed with how they added a whole bunch of new characters in the middle of the series, making it really confusing as well.

I believe that the biggest surprise for me was Lucky Star. I really didn't want to watch the series at first -_-' But, when I did, I found that it was a really funny series. ^^

    Chobits, anime version only.

The ending [and last 5-6 epis] especially.

It'd make Santa Claus himself vomit with disgust. Well maybe not, but I just didn't like the last 1/3 of the show.

Now the manga on the other hand, had a brillant ending.

I liked Full Metal Alchemist for the most part, but wasn't fond of the end. I was more let down by Vandread, though. I only made it through the series because I liked Meia.

Kodocha is good, but I cannot find a lot of the episodes. I saw the first 4 or 5 dubbed episodes on youtube though.

Where can I find this series?

The biggest letdown anime for me was without a doubt The Getbackers, the manga was so awesome, and then they ruined it with the anime.

The biggest surprise, I'll go with Genshiken, I thought a manga/anime about manga/anime and otaku would be lame, but it is a great show! I highly recommend this anime to all otaku here.

Hikaru no Go was a big surprise for me as i didn't think it would be anywhere near as good as it actually was but the suspense in it was really amazing when they were playing each other in the tournaments and there were some very sad sad moments in it too.

Biggest surprise was Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I figured it'd be a generic mecha series, and turned out to be the most epic thing ever devised by man. It makes The Illiad and The Oddessy look like Dr. Seuss.

The biggest let down...far too many to list. The Lucky Star anime was a letdown, Trinity Blood, Monochrome Factor, and a lot more.

Final Fantasy Unlimited. I really liked it, but the ending just left you hanging. It needed more episodes.

In the manga BATTLE ROYALE, the biggest surprise for me was in the last volume. I was shocked when Kawada died and Nariko, and Shuuya were the only ones to survive and go to America Also, it was too bad that Kiriyama had to die like that, and that sucks for him, because he wasa totaly detached, unemotional, physchotic guy that felt emotion and pain again right before his death...sucks huh?? Also, why did Mitsuko have to die?? She was one of my favorite characters for several reasons <3

Chobits. It was this this really cute anime series. I have no clue how to do the spoiler thing, so I won't post any spoilers. I just wasn't expecting the second half of the series to take the turn that it did. Still a good anime.

Biggest letdown? thats easy, there are a number of them, but the main one is Gundam OO, I was so excited over it, when I watched it, I couldn't finish the series, it let me down that much.

I think a few people are confused, it's not about what the most surprising moment in an anime was, it's about which has been the most surpisingly good and which have been surprisingly bad.

Wouldn't want to have anyone spoiling pivoting moments!

Sorry I guess I didn't word it very well

You can easily find all the subbed usually on Veoh or Youtube. However this series is one of the few I'd say is most enjoyed when watching the Dub. The humor is so great if you hear it rather than read it and the English voice actors, especially Sana's, are just fantastic!

The dub is impossible to find online excluding a few episodes, unfortunately, I think we'll just have to buy it

    This.

Curses, I was going to make a similar comparison using 300. Xero got the point across well enough. For something that I thought would be pretty typical fare, damn did it prove me wrong. Gurren Lagann is like the epitome of masculinity mixed with old school mech and universes being reduced to mereprojectiles. Pure awesome.

Biggest letdown? Gundam 00 wasn't quite what I was expecting, not in a bad way, but I didn't hate it either. It was just alright. Voice acting was pretty good, music was alright as well. Characters were so-so. It just didn't pull me in as much as I would've wanted it to.

Death Note, in the bad way. I don't know, everything about it was interesting but it just didn't click with me. I think I might have enjoyed it more as a novel series.

Ergo Proxy in the good way. Once I got through the first three episodes the story really kicked off. I was expecting a crime noir style detective story but instead what I got was a sort of road movie adventure which was very refreshing.

Fafner of the Azure, great title and mecha stuff but the story was a disappointment for me. I didn't even managed to finish the series.

Biggest surprise was.. I dunno. I'll think about it sometime later.

I couldn't sit through the first five episodes of Blood+.

I never thought that I would like Hana-Kimi, because I don't really like Shoujo Beat, but I really fell in love with Hana-Kimi.

For me... I think it would have to be Death Note. I just discovered OVA, which I haven't watched yet, because I can't find the English subbs, but I have been reading an unofficial manga, which is getting interesting. It's basically light becomes basically a death guard, after being a death god as the anime left off, and basically light looks like light, and has 2 silver pistols. And his job as a death guard is to protect a group of humans, while concealing himself as best as possible. So, to advance the plot, he is to protect his old group with misa and everyone else. Its actually interesting, and i dont care if it's unofficial

I agree, I saw FF unlimited a while ago but the ending truly struck me down.

Are you kidding? This was one of the best anime/gundam series I have ever seen! Plus, another season is coming out in october.

    --------------------------

I think the best anime I have ever seen would have either be Gundam 00. It was sweet, my type of anime. Also Rurouni Kenshin was amazing.

The worst would definatly have to be Green Green Tv of Final Fantasy Unlimited. They were both just sooooo bad, especially the endings.

Biggest Surprises-Naruto. I used to make fun of it. I was soooo wrong. Now I love it. Bleach-I thought it would be all serious, but it is too funny. Death Note- I expected it to be all emo and anti-God, but it has intriguing mind games. Oban: Star Racers(French Japanese joint) when I saw the commercial I was like "ew" but it was one of the most captivating series I have ever seen. Code Geass-I was like, um this is a little off topic for me. But I can't resist the Death Note like mind games.

Biggest let down-Mermaid Melody. I saw all of 8 secconds on youtube and nearly threw up. Again, I apologize to fans, but that was an embarassment to mermaids. Now, I love merpeople. Merboi's are my best friends. But I could NOT enjoy that. Look at the theme, "Mermaids fight evil by singing J-pop"? 'Nuf said.

Hmmmm...... let down has to go to Ikki Tousen. It was hyped up on a few anime review sites.

Surprise has to go to Gantz. Seriously underrated. If you can find it it is highly recommended.

An Anime that surpised me. Well there were many. "Azumanga Daioh" was the first 'Slice of Life' / 'School Comedy' that I ever bought. I saw some clips and it looked great so I bought it, although I was not so certain if it was my kind of thing as I never saw one of those genres before as I used to always watch things such as "Cowboy Bebop", "Hellsing" and "Samurai Champloo". But when I got it and watched them I fell in love with it!! I adored it so much and it is now one of my most favourite top 5.

Since then I have bought more Anime like that, such as; "School Rumble", "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu", "I,My,Me Strawberry Eggs", "Lucky Star" and "Sketch Book~ Full Colours". It is all thanks to "Azumanga Daioh" that I found one of my most favourite genres of Anime, but none comedy Anime will ever beat it in my opinion. ^_^

So far, I've really enjoyed Naruto, and I really didn't think I would like it too well. Biggest dissapointment has got to be School Rumble, it didn't have a good plot for me to follow, just a bunch of high school kids acting stupid,
