Favorite Myths and Legends

What is yours? Mine would be Greek/Roman mythology. And a favorite within that:

Hermes: Why are you depressed, Apollo?

Apollo: Because I'm so unlucky in love, Hermes.

Hermes: That's worth hurting over. But how are you unlucky?
Or do you just mean you're still hurting about the whole Daphne thing?

Apollo: No, I'm over that. But I'm grieving for a boyfriend - the Spartan, the son of Oibalos.

Hermes: Do tell. Is Hyacinthos dead?

Apollo: Very dead.

Hermes: Who did it, Apollo? I mean, who could be so heartless that he would kill that beautiful guy?

Apollo: I did it.

Hermes: Did you go crazy, Apollo?

Apollo: No! It was a bit of an unfortunate accident.

Hermes: How? I want to hear how it happened.

Apollo: He was learning to throw the discus and I was practicing with him. But that damned wind Zephyros - see, he had also been in love with the boy for a long time but the boy didn't pay attention to him, and he couldn't take being ignored. He did it. I threw my discus up, like I always do, but he blew down from Mount Taygetos, and moved it, and slammed it into the boy's skull so a lot of blood gushed from the wound and the boy died right then and there. Well, right away I shot an arrow at Zephryos and made him run off. I chased him all the way back to the mountain. As for the boy, I raised a tomb for him in Amyclai where the discus got him, and I made the earth send up a flower from his blood. The nicest and brightest flower of all, Hermes. It even has letters that spell out a lament for the deceased. Do you think my grief is unreasonable?

Hermes: Yes I do, Apollo. You knew that you'd chosen a boyfriend who was mortal. So don't be upset because he died.

The Anneid by Virgil. The story of the founding of Rome by a trojan by the name of Anneas. A really great story. Full of adventure and blood and all that great stuff.

Read them! I was lucky enough that my college had a Greek/Roman Mythology class. One of my favorite courses of all time and 4.0ed it!

The Bermuda Triangle. People say that if you sail or fly over the Bermuda Triangle, you'll disappear. I watched this show called Truth or Scare. They talked about the Bermuda Triangle. My eyes were glued to the screen! It was so interesting!

I also like Crop Circles. Some people say that they are messages from life form from outer space; some people think they are hoax from other humans; some say when stars and planets aline, they form. Its a very intriguing topic.

Vlad Tepes. Otherwise known as "Dracula" or "Vlad the Impaler". I just love the story, I find it really interesting, especially because Vlad Tepes was a real Romanian man, just not a Vampire. Although he did still impale people. He was called Vald the Impaler because he impaled his enemys by stabbing a pole or spear through their anus and then exited it through their mouth.

The whole Dracula theme really seems awesome to me.

Yeah mine too! Man, I can't believe someone would be capable of doing that.
If I remember correctly, he organized a banquet and the guests are I think some corrupt officials. After the ceremony he had all of the guests killed and impaled just the way you described.

I also like Greek mythology. We studied not long ago. And we actually had a simple play. I took on the role of Hermes! haha

But my real favorite is the story of Cuchulain in Irish mythology. In case you don't know him, this may give you an idea who he is. In the anime, Fate/Stay night, he's actually the servant, Lancer.
I read about him in wikipedia and thought he's really cool.

I really like the Christian mythology (Leviathan, Lucifer, Hell, etc.) and the various mythologies from the American natives (Aztec, Maya, etc.).

There was a rural legend in my village saying that if you dump your face in a hot, boiling, fresh made cornbread, your freckles will dissappear.
There's also a tale about a kid who tried it and didn't make it... alive.

I have always loved myths and legends. All of them seem so interesting. I read a bit of the egyptian mythology, its's really interesting but the greek mythology is what interest me most. ^^

I've read a lot of Greek and Roman mythology

"Aeneis" by Publius Vergilius Maro and "Libri ab urbe condita" by Titus Livius.
I actually read parts of it in Latin... the translating took sooooo long xD

The parts I read from Livius, were mainly about Hannibal.
Ofcourse I didn't read all of it in Latin... I wouldn't be finished yet if I had.

I'm also fond of folklore.. I just can't name a specific one now.

I believe in most monster myths, and I believe they are real, but some secret or unknown reason is preventing us from discovering this

I mean when you think about it, vampires, werewolves, witches etc etc, the legends had to originate somewhere

The Goddess "Britannia". The Roman term for the British isles and also known as a personified Goddess by the Romans, and is now a national personification for Great Britain.

She is also on the flip side of a GB 50 pence piece.
Described as a beautiful young woman with a helmet and her right breast exposed. Also bares a spear and shield. Their is also a statue of her in plymouth. She was also one of the influences of the revival of Great Britain and also the new birth of the British Empire.
