Default Macross Frontier - Sheryl Nome rocks!

Whaaaahhh?! There's no Macross Frontier thread yet? Impossible!!! If there is one and my old eyes were tooo blind to see it, please delete this one. I have one question and I hope I can find the answer here. Did Aya Endo, the voice of Sheryl Nome, also sing the songs for the concerts and show endings? If she did then I'm impressed. The ending theme is just beautiful and sappy, but nice.

I am so engrossed with this anime that I've learnt the darn "Nyan Nyan" commercial lyrics and dance by heart. Okay, I know I've scared some people with that one.

Anyway, back to my question. If anyone has an answer do let me know. I've been playing Aya's voice and the song repeatedly and still I feel the two are different people. So help me shed some light on this if you can. If you haven't watched Macross Frontier, I highly recommend it since I'm not a mech fan myself and I love it

Technically, there are two voice behind Sheryl Nome role. Aya Endo plays the dialogue part of her and May'n (May Nakabayashi) does the singing.

    Hypergraphian
I agree she has a fantastic voice.

look at the more info bar to the right. says something about

I really wish they had done the ending Ai Oboete imasuka from episode 1.
The redo of Minmey's song. But I suppose it is good that they have moved on with the new one. I just like how haunting it was in the last verse.

    Macross Frontier to answer honeysenpai17
Is a sequel in the line of Macross storyline. (not including macrossII which is not part of the ongoing story)
Macross is a mecha/interstellar war/love story (not necissarily in any one of those orders.)

I am biased being that I have seen all things related to macross way too much, but This is what I have found is a good review so far.

Did I mention that the animation, acting and other music it absolutely top notch?

I have seen the first 2 episodes of Macross Frontier and to be honest I have horribly mixed feelings about it. I don't know why but I've just failed to get too into it. The battle animations are absolutely jaw droppingly incredible. Unfortunately none of the characters seem to have any depth whatsoever, and those that have the potential seem somewhat ignored.

And the opening and ending songs are distinctly sub par and seem to draw forth images of a whimsical 'high school days' anime rather than the mecha drama of the Macross of yore. I think they should have used the song Sheryl sung in episode 1 as the opening theme, it had such an intense power to it.

Finally, the lead character seems far far too generic, and that green haired quarter zentran girl is absolutely irritating.

To each is own I guess, I can't say much about the other Macross animes since I haven't viewed them, so I have to admit that I am a bit of a noob in terms of the mecha genre. Maybe that's why I enjoy it; because its not too focused on the mechs.

I agree about your points on the opening theme. I have absolutely no idea why Maaya Sakamoto copied a bar of tune from the Full Metal Alchemist OP1. Everytime I hear it I cringe. The rest of the song is just okay.

On one more note, I like the green haired girl's phone. So cute!! I wanna be able to pull on a frog's legs to pick up a call, or squeeze the living life out of it to hang up. Hahaha.

That aside, thanks so much for letting me know who the singer was. I was digging the web like mad for her.

I been wondering why the orignal Macross looks good to me when I was young.

I just love the technologies that been portrayed in Macross Frontier. Ranka's pet toy organic-looking cellphone is one of my favorite. I think it's the fusion between Human and Zentradian technology. The automated service/vending robots sometimes served as a comic relief. A lot fuzzy logic and algorithm involved if you want to implement it in the real world.

But, nothing beats the calling vid-phone service robot in the original Macross.

I do see a growing problem with the fact that too many main characters are introduced in the first couple of episodes of a new mecha show...
"Let's introduce everyone and give them some pointless lines because somehow we are going to remember roughly 100 faces and names."
This has caused a reaction from many to say, "well I really could care less of that individual, or the whole cast for that matter." I have reciently seen this in Gundam00 and Code Geass.

In these cases I have Usually came to like the show anyway. But, sometimes you just wish they would introduce some people about 10 episodes in. Show some restraint folks...

A strong point of other series, and even the original Macross, sometimes a great character was not in the show till about half way in.

It does get better, and the characters more enjoyable as the series progresses. But, sometimes if your plate is allready full of shows that you are actually enjoying I would definately not suggest suffering through.

However, if you have the time (I have seen up to ep5) I believe the story is now matching the action.

I so want that phone as well.

Maybe it's because I have been indulging in much more serious anime of late. My latest dive in the Mecha genre being the ultra gritty classic 'Armored Trooper Votoms' that has caused me to be perplexed by the lighter tone of Macross Frontier. I have certainly not written it off as an anime, I am just putting it on the back burner for a while.

And Funkgun BTW, if you think that's a lot of characters, check out 'Legend Of The Galactic Heroes' that anime has the single largest regular cast I've seen in an anime. Although it's epic, galaxy spanning, empires rising and falling plot definitely justifies such a huge cast.

Votoms = classic on many levels.
Have not seen Legend of Galactic Heros. I have seen it on many lists forever. It looks immense. The animation stills I have seen of it is rather good. The quality compares to Chars Counter Attack

Wow 110 episodes over almost 10 years. That must be one hell of a cast.

I just hope that whoever is the romantic interests are in this series of Macross that they will actually have something resembling genuine chemistry. The Mylene/Basara romance was one of the most forced romantic pairings I have ever seen. While Mylene and Gamlin's romance seemed much more genuine, with actual developing feelings. Only for there to be a sudden 180. One of the things that really, really bugged me with Macross 7.

And Funkgun, I absolutely totally implore you to watch LoGH, it is in my opinion one of the best anime I have ever seen.

Yay Macross Frontier thread! Im practically posting in every single MF thread at all the sites i go too. Im just too darn addicted to this anime. I have'nt seen the previous Macross yet, but that does'nt stop me from enjoying this anime.

What makes it so good is the high quality animation, and the catchy songs. Although, im not too fond of the OP, but the rest of them are superb. ;D
Btw what's the name of that song that Ranka sang at the end of episode 7? I want that. =0

Default Its good - in a tongue in cheek play on the original Macross story

Okay - let's get this out of the way.

I am not a fanboy, nor am I an otaku or giddy teenager without a life outside of the realm of fantasy. I work 7am - 8pm Mondays to Fridays at a hospital and work 2 weekends a month too. And, no I am not the nursing staff either (no disrespect to them in that comment - most of my friends are in nursing). Luckily my salary notch is probably 8-10 times their average. If you haven't figure d out my profession by now, then you're probably too young to worry about jobs yet.

    So ...

I am old enough to have kids that this show is targeted at.

As someone who admires complex Mecha anime (incl. Transformers, and any robot related movies!) and have followed most of the Gundam and Macross sagas, I have to admit this show is good.

Animation is top notch. The story and directing is seamless, and there does seem to be an element of suspense in it all, even if it does feel like a "koko wa Greenwood" type of love-comedy anime with a mecha spin.

Hey, I loved Greenwood when I was in college, and my wife loves it too, so no harm there.

I enjoy the way Kawamori-san keeps melding old Macross stories, puns, and jokes into the current series. If you have watched the original Macross, Macross Plus and Zero, you will know what I am talking about - right down to the "Bridge Triplets," Misa Hayase, and even the Capt. Glover look-alike. Darn unoriginal, but surprisingly satisfying to see these old characters re-created and translated for the 2000's.

Bottom line is - so far so good. They musn't mess it up now!

    A really old Macross admirer.

My man, I feel ya. I might not be as old, or maybe so. But I have been watching this show since the 80's. I think it is one of those that pays great homage to the original show, but then throws a few curveballs to keep you off guard.

I love the action/music/ and development so far. But that it brings back good memories of it's predecessor is just icing on the cake.
Sure Wish I had a little dvd player on my forklift at work... no, wait, that would be dangerous.

    As far as I've followed of this series, it takes all the elements from previous Macross. Let it be love triangle affair, the influence force of music, the entire episode tribute to previous Macross (like what they did in one of the episode in Macross 7) to the trademark of the Macross universe: transformable mecha and Macross missile massacre. Yes, as you guess it;

like its predecessor, there's also a transformable spaceship
    .

Beside been mentioned earlier by drchips88, they also reference Vermilion Squadron (and their personal mecha colour scheme) and bring back Skull Squadron as Frontier main force/defender. Apart of the original, they reference Macross 7 i.e. Skull's "Planet Dance" battle formation and saving the day, Basara Neiki-style. Even they included Guvava re-incarnated alien pet for the lead female main character.

I think the one of the diferences that this series are connection between the enigamtic VF-27 pilot and Ranka.

I suspect that both of them are brother and sister.
Also, difference from the previous lead male character, he's determine to break the tradition of his family and finding his own path of life. And,

I also suspected Vajra is the consequences of what they did on 117th Surveyor Fleet and Ranka is the key to it.

After what happen on the latest episode, more secrets and conspiracies will be unveil. Let see how it goes from here on.

Wow, that would be a revelation, Spoiler #2, if it is true.

Also would allow for Alto to not end up with her.

I somehow like how it deviates from the original story, yet remains faithful. To be honest I find it the closest rival to the original in story. I liked Zero, only so-so liked 7 and loved Plus. (also I liked Macross II a lot, which I know many did not)

Ranka's singing also somehow makes me wonder if she is one of the Vajara... on another note, also if her singing might be the catalyst in winning against them, like Minmey did against the Zentradi.

It's a solid, good anime with good music (Kanno Yoko and Gabriela Robin, the same as Ghost in a Shell: SAC). But then the nyan-nyan thing melted my mind away at the first episode so I may be a little prejudiced.

The enemy monster/mecha look like something straight out a 90's Gamera movie. Very nostalgic.

On thing that bugs me a little 'bout Yoko Kanno works in this series. She sampled some music from OP/ED of other anime (like FMA Melissa and Black Cat Daia no Hana for an example) for its songs and also a theme music from Star Wars in one of the tension/suspense scene soundtrack and Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water for Ranka new insert song. It makes her works a bit un-original from her previous works.

I think Ranka originally 1/4 Zentradi, 3/4 human. However, after the experiment onboard/upon the destruction of 117th Fleet that involving adding Vajra blood/crystal/whatever in her, she is now 1/2 Vajra, 1/4 Human, 1/4 Zentradi. And it makes her sort like the Little Queen of Vajra (Sound like a plot taken from the Alien trilogy). That's why earlier in the series, the Vajra are atuned to her singing. Her Aimo song is sort like the method of controlling the Vajra (Now, she sound like Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades).

Yes, in episode 14, it's the first time any series in Macross using

tactical nuclear weapons aka Reflex/Reaction Weapon (depends on the subs)

VF-171 is the refined version of the earlier Macross 7 VF-17 Nightmare, if you noticed. The NUNS elite force is Diamond Force and strikingly it follows Macross 7 of having more than one elite squadron.

    EDIT:

I reckoned that this series will unravel the mystery of The Protoculture and the hidden threat of The Supervision Army that been a popular subject in SDF-Macross
