After I heard about this, I had to write something. There is some, uh, grammar, more than usual, but I thought it fit the poem well.
I heard on the news
On my fifty-two inch television
That a man killed his daughter
And was applauded for it.
What the ****?
She talked to a British soldier
And fell “in love”
So her father crushed her throat.
What the ****?
In the name of “honor”
He killed his only daughter?
What the ****?
How can people claim such things?
That your religion gives you an excuse
To end a human life
All I can say is thus: bullshit!
What the ****?
While I sit here in my chair
Drinking my Mountain Dew
Others are out there
Killing their kin, and no one cares?
What the ****?
Of course, who am I to talk;
No matter what I say
I’ll continue my life.
What the ****?
What happened to human dignity
Human rights and human dreams?
What happened to right and wrong?
Cultural differences, you say?
Well, **** you too.
She did not need to die
And even when she did, why is the father still alive?
Why is he not behind bars
Or perhaps shot by firing squad?
What the ****?
How come no one is putting their foot down
And saying, “this is not right!”
Why am I alone in a circle of silence?
It should not be this way.
We shouldn’t be afraid to tell them
That’s sick, and inhumane
Just because they’re different!
What the ****?
Fight for what’s right
Even if you stand alone
The old saying, should we ignore it?
And we are not alone
Others would join us
To end such travesty, such injustice.
What the ****?
So I say, someone needs to stand
And finally say “give it up!”
No more, I say, no more inhumanity!
No more injustice, no more excuses
With the mask of religion covering them!
But who will stand?
I can say this for certain;
I will not.
I will go on with my life
As if nothing has happened.
Dear God, I hate this.
