Default Just finished GANTZ. wth..... (spoilers)

    Seriously.

Maybe my english mind is incapable of processing such a clustermuck of gore and death, but I almost feel like I couldn't take any lessons out of this anime.

What's worse, is that if you take this for face value, meaning there's no lesson, this is the bloodiest, most pointless anime I've ever watched.

Everyone dies and this "alternate existence" as a "copy" of someone else ends and the ball disappears. The sex and the violence all had a hollow, meaningless feel to it. The "villains" all were either too stupid or truly insane enough to not give a crap about their own lives. Most of the conversations in the movie were about the current situation or about the actions the people were doing in the "real world". There was love and defending the weak, and then all of those people get cut down like dogs. There was religious fervor, hardened spirit, and even complete humility. All. cut. down. Is the lesson of this anime that life is futile? Was the author a lowlife, depressed philosopher who happens to be able to draw monsters and gore well? This anime is a far cry from its bretheren in gore: elfen lied, NGEvan, etc. Those used the gore to finalize the lessons they taught, the questions they posed. Are there questions in GANTZ, or just mindless gore from a person pissed off at society? Taskette kudasai!

The only thing I can pull from this is "indifference kills us all" or maybe "everyone has a role", but even that's not completely true here.

I kept looking for some clarification; not anything cut and dry, but at least an inkling as to what the meaning of it all was. Nothing doing.

Please brainstorm with me so I can feel like the last 6 hours of my life weren't wasted watching this.....

Yeah, Gantz is pretty messed up. I remember half way through watching this show, I wondered what the point was. Towards the end of it, one of the characters said something that made me stop wondering...

Remember the guy with the tall spiky blonde hair (Nozaki), that saved a child in the river then drowned? He says something towards the end of the series. Right before he dies, he says to Kei - "Kurono, be careful. Gantz isn't the sickest one here. The sickest ones, are human."

I think that might be a lesson to consider.

Dude, read the manga. The anime is not only incomplete (It's missing like...80% of the still on-going manga), but the ending was completely made up, just for the show. The entire anime feels empty, and is not that well done. Also note that the anime was made very early on in the manga's publication, such that it actually overlapped the manga at parts, and and various parts of it simply segmented from the manga.

The manga itself is incredibly, and I'd highly recommend it.
