Girls and Technology

I was was watching a couple of girls sitting in front of me in class today, and they couldn't get their laptop to connect to the internet, or well to the KSU Wireless network. so I did it for them. This is not the first time I have seen this, or things like this.
Now I am not saying that girls are stupid, or less intelligent then men, but I am wondering why does the average girl know less about technology then guys.
any ideas?

Girls have always been more towards the non-technical side in my experience. And it's not that they can't, it's more like they want to enjoy the non-technical side of life.

That and they have techie BF's/Hubbies who can do it for them, lol!

These days you will actually find that they know a lot more than they used to. Girls over here know a lot about how PC's work, some know even more than I.

But I am honestly not sure, other than what I just said.

I think I know a bit about technology. I can troubleshoot a few basic problems and know a for bits of coding, but not much.

I know a bit more about software [I think anyway]. I also know how to shop for computers by looking at qualitys like ram, memory, speed, gigs, etc, etc, etc

You've seen a couple girls-- and maybe a couple more-- be ignorant about technology, so you make a general statement about girls? But what about all these other girls on the Internet right now?

I understand what you mean though. That's because boys just have a natural leaning towards technology. You know the old saying-- boys=science and math, girls=liberal arts. This is still very much true today, though the number of girls in the science and math field has increased and the number of boys in the liberal arts field has increased.

It just depends on your interest.. Sorta.

I would say that a guy who likes cars, and that a girl who likes to shop for clothes and shoes knows less about computers than a person who who likes to play video games all day

Well I'm a girl, and I know quite a lot about computers. My dad has taught me a lot. He is a computer technician. Now you probably think I am lying since I am 14, but I do know a thing or two about computers. I can easily reconnect my internet network if it was offline. I probably only know as much as I do today because I have interest in computers.

Really, though, I don't think it has so much to do with a girl's lack of knowledge as it does your (and other males) quantity of knowledge. It's not to say there aren't girls interested in technology (because there are, and I know some of them ^^), but I think it's safe to say your average girl is going to have less interest than your average technology-geek guy (whom, I assume, would be noting the difference).

I don't have much interest in it myself, and have never formally studied it (too busy being a science nerd XD). Still, I get by. And if I have to ask my tech-head husband (who has formally studied it) for some help on something, I don't feel inferior because I know I won't have to ask a second time.

I think it's easy for people to fault others for not having much knowledge in an area they themselves have a great deal of knowledge in. As a natural science major, I'm forever surprised at just how little about biology/chemistry/biochemistry/anatomy the average joe knows. It can be difficult to distinguish just what information people should know, and don't, and what they don't know simply because they haven't studied it and aren't likely to require that information. I can't fault someone for not knowing what they will probably never need for the duration of their life.

Have you ever thought that maybe they knew and they just wanted to get attention from guys? Sort of like trying to start a conversation, some girls are tricky ( I am a girl, and I am average.)

I find that as a general rule the average person in general knows little about technology.

Though girls are indeed rare in the technology courses at college, and typically hard to find outside of most liberal arts majors since they tend to be more artistic or closer to most girls' natural abilities.

There are some though, I know there is at least one in my CCNA2 class and I see others coming into and out of the technology labs. Not very often though.

I am inclined to agree with that, with the exception of the insinuation.

Additionally my question started from reading an article a few years back about girls lagging behind guys in technology. Then add a few observations and I am forced to ask the question. Out of simple curiosity.

I mean no offense but I am forced to add that the "adverage" or mean of the female population is not present here. I have to remind you that AI plays WoW, has a Youtube account, as well as digital photography, Fabala is a moderator, and MaruDashi makes signatures I think. in fact the three of you more than likely are heavy computer users than my self.

Additionally, I do not think a statement about the general populist, and their knowledge physical sciences is appropriate in this specific topic. for instance, the average person does not know this, but if you have a bad spark plug, take cigarette ashes and rub it onto the element. and it will clean it, or if you have water in the gas tank add hydrogen peroxide to the gas (this depends on the amount of water). If you have a localized staff infection place a Met warm wash cloth onto it, it will cause increased blood flow, and increase the effect of your immune system onto it, allergic reaction to bug bite, take benadrill (if not a severe reaction), Asprine thins the blood to help with pain and I think why it helps with heart attacks, when the leaves on a tree point down, it will rain.

there are tons of physical science information that people possess it is all in the way you ask the question, and present the information.
This is all stuff that I picked up, every day knowledge, and it is all chemistry, and natural science, but I am a business major. Additionally that is only a small percent of what I know in those areas. To me that is common knowledge, take a person from NY City, and how much would they know about packing bearings in a 4WD Jeep, and the effects of mud, and submergence on them? Additionally how would I a person who lives in the south know what all the steam coming from the streets in NY city is about?

My sister is an architect, I knew about the effect of lighting in a room before she did.

I mean who out of politics know what Iron triangles, and pidgin holing, and pork barreling is?

Why cant doctors spell, why can't I spell. How is it I know one language very well, but know next to nothing about others?

Why do girls have such nice hand writing? why can I type with out looking at the key board, and wright in a cursive manuscript mixture, that only I can read? how about all my run on sentiences? I cant diagram a sentence, what is a prepositional phrase?
Why does my renter's insurance not cover nuclear bomb damage? Even if it is not associated with terrorism and acts of war?


The point after that rant is, how many people are well rounded in all area?
Few.
How many people are specialized in one?
Many.

But with the over whelming presence of technology and its influence on todays world, why does such an occurrence exist? And does it?

I am in no way alluding to the female sex being inferior to that of the male sex. I am only asking the question.

Also, are sexes and the cultures of the sexes responsible for males being interested in one, and females in the other?

I hate it when people generalize about women and technology/videogames/etc. Like MaruDashi, I happen to absolutely despise makeup. And then there's the fact that I can SSB!Melee and Mario Kart circles around the average teenage guy.

Hmmm at one of the computer forums I pay frequent visits to, most members were born in 1991/2 and the ratio of males to females was 12:1. Not bad IMO.

I think the average women knows exactly what the average man knows. The BIG difference is that the computer savvy woman can actually live without gloating about it and carries on with her life. Most 'computer geeks' that I know are like in love with their computers [wallpaper selection] and when someone's build log is full of comments like, "Sexy," "Excuse me I need to clean up" and "That set up is pretty hot," you know THERE ARE SOME SERIOUS ISSUES.

PS : I do not think demonplight is one of the guys I speak of.

I've always preferred tables over frames, though I must say that if you're working on client-side only scripting, frames might be unavoidable.

Javascript is the only part of HTML which I would legitimately call "coding". The rest of HTML is basically applying the same mechanics used in BB codes, in which case anyone who's ever used a forum could be considered a coder.

Average girl, please excuse me if I'm going to be rude, maybe they are below average (again sorry okay!). My knowledge of an average girl is someone who knows to use the computer very well. They know the basic technical stuff like that. Well, this is only my opinion.

Just doesn't seem like a whole lot of girls are interested in the subject, I suppose. Heck, in my family we all grew up around computers, and while me and my brothers all have extensive knowledge of them, my sisters only dabble in their use. Not certain if that could be considered genetic or just psychological.

It's funny, I've played video games practically all my life, and I always had my brothers or boyfriend set up the wires/cables for me. And even now with all that crap I can only do simple stuff and have a guy do the rest for me.

Yah I'm pathetic, but it's been my experience that the guys like doing it, and I can't date guys who dont have some kind of knowledge about tech stuff.

I have a so-so amount of tech skills, more than I use to anyway, but nothing compared to what some people have.

Ummm I don't think that's what he means by tech wise. He used the most extreme example to start this thought process but I honestly think he is referring to the female population within the technology sector and using that as a representative sample. One of my friends is doing a B IT and there are very few women.
