Definitive DVD releases

I know the ADV dvds are no longer being produced and are available at wonderfully high prices ($300 / season??) at places like Amazon.

However, I'm looking around the net and seeing dvd's produced by companies like "FX" (??) that supposedly contain the "uncut" versions (which I want). They seem to have less DVD's in them which makes me think the video/audio quality might suffer from the ADV releases. However, there's no way for me to know one way or another.

It also doesn't help that after season 2, the FX releases do not mention being uncut.

I'm looking for original Japanese (w/English subs) releases, unedited in any way from their original release.

If anyone can be of any assistance, I'd greatly appreciate it. And yes, I am aware that they can be found on the net...however, I want to actually own a physical copy of these...so that SOME money might make it back into the original producer's hands.

This guide is quite informative, and actually lists FX as sellers of bootlegs. While I haven't been doing vast amounts of research on it, but from what they and you say, it sounds like those are bootlegs you're seeing. As mentioned in the guide, the price, artwork (look), and number of dvds are all indicators of whether or not something is likely to be a bootleg.

If you really want an official release but don't want to pay $300, check out eBay and Amazon sellers for used or "like new" copies. I don't see you being able to get legit copies any other way at this time, as they are no longer being made. So if you don't want to go down the bootleg route (and I would advise you not...never know what you're getting), it's your only option.

For example, here's a seller offering a used complete set of Sailor Moon S dvds for $140. 98% positive from 59 ratings is an okay score. I would always check out what negative scores were given for when deciding on any seller. Some complaints should impact more severely on your decision than others.

Read the guides I linked to, and have a look across eBay or Amazon. Know what you're looking for and scrutinize any images provided carefully to make sure you know what you're getting. Also don't shy away from asking the seller questions. They should be forthcoming. If they aren't, that's a bad sign in and of itself.
