Default Viruses and Spyware, a tough opponent

Last week, my computer somehow got infected by SEVENTY-ONE spyware programs and a handful of viruses. Man, it was soooooo slow and my precious data it being destroyed everytime I turn my computer on. My Anti-virus couldn't keep up! I thought of reformatting it but I had so much data inside that I didn't want to lose! I was at a loss but alas, the technician in my Mom's office gave me a hand yesterday and gave me an anti-virus and anti-spyware program. After 5 hours of conflict, the dust cleared and I emerged victorious, my computer is now, virus and spyware free. Hah, now I can finally use it again. I've been stuck to using my Dad's laptop for a week.

Don't you just hate it when these sort of things happen to your computer? Please share your experiences. If you have not yet experienced this kind of thing, please do tell me the name of your anti-virus program.

    Lawl, computer noobz.

Most of the spyware/malware can be removed from your computer within ~70 minutes.
There are also various ways to restore deleted / destroyed data. o.O

Ahaha, man you are right! But reality is rather cruel. I did take me five hours! It was super slow, the anti-virus program that the technician gave took about 40 minutes to install. After I installed it, it was out-dated, the data inside was dated "August 2007". I had to update it which took around an hour an a half but my computer malfunctioned so I had to do it all over again. After doing so, the program itself malfunctioned I had to take the necessary measures to make it up and running again which took probably an hour because my computer kept malfunctioning. After I had everything ready and the anti-virus program was already running at 100% efficiency, I started the scan for threats which took 87:50 minutes. It was a full scan so it took a long time. It was really a hard fight but I never give up, hahaha. It could all have been done in a shorter time if I just reformatted the computer but I didn't want any data loss, I didn't have any backup for the data. There, hope that clears any future criticisms.

And yeah, there are various ways to restore data but I don't like taking chances. Some data might get lost during reformatting. The data in my computer is all important.
This all happened today so my memory is still clear.

And oh yeah I'm no computer noobz (I presume it means newbie, correct?) I received the proper training in my school.
Last edited by Souji Seta; 04-17-2008 at 12:31 AM. Reason: I put "60" rather than "50" in the scan duration

I had this once. Nothing serious but my pc is slow again. For no reason.. Since there are no spyware, virus, backdoors, rootkits etc. on my pc. It's just being lazy doing things his way.

    Hm, alright.
Well mostly it depends what kind of tools youre going to use to clean a computer.
Fastest way is System Restore to a certain date, other alternatives are booting portable virus/spyware scanners from USB sticks. Of course scanning time will depend on the HDD's speed and storage amount. :]

Indeed. Back when I used a shared computer it was almost never free of malware of some kind. I recall our Windows 98 machine was rendered inoperable courtesy of Spysheriff, and then the replacement for that computer just abruptly stopped working after six months. XD

The laptop I currently own has pretty much done me well, though. Been acting fairly funny recently, though I think I know what the problem is and I'm just too lazy to fix it. >_>

So long as you know how to work a computer well and have the proper programs it isn't too difficult to fix the majority of problems caused by malware.

To tackle a Virus all you need is a block of ice, a tooth-pick, a wedding ring, a bottle cap dipped in warm water for 6 seconds, and a rubber duck.

I don't understand how the rubber duck fits into the equation.
Either way, it is what you said or get a UNIX/UNIX-like OS.

I've experienced 2 major attacks this past year. One was salvageable, while the other was a result of my trust for a friend at school that went wrong.

First one happened on my older computer, and was from Spy Sheriff among a mess of other stuff. My parents had been browsing screensavers and wallpapers on Google since they'd been entertained by the whole computer thing, and man did it go wrong. I came back from school to a full desktop of icons and a stacked system tray of random ads and programs screaming "SPYWARE BREACH!" "DOWNLOAD HERE!" "CLICK NOW!". I was lucky to get the cursor across the screen in more than 5 fps. Since it was a test pc really, I just did a full system restore and it was fine. It was a good experience actually, because it motivated me to research some decent security programs and browsing habits to teach my family.

Second attack I'll simplify. My friend Randy sent me a game installer.

Wasn't a game downloader. (It was a moment of weakness, I really wanted to try the game out). Let's just say it ended with the classic "Blue screen of death". Oh what a night that was. Thankfully I had about 40% of things backed up on my mp3 player, but I still lost all my preferences, most of the music, programs, photos, movies etc. It wasn't a great experience, but you move on!

    No, it wasn't.

Attacks are things like DDoS, Flooding, Teardrop, Nuke, Distributed attack and such.
What you had was a simple malware/spyware infections [at the first case] and the second was your own mistake, the program you installed messed up some of your drivers so you got BSoD.

I don't know all the fancy computer terms so I guess that's my own lack of knowledge. Just include info like that in your first post, you kind of confused/bothered me. Sorry about that though.

haha, I don't do that sort of thing. Maybe my brother when I'm not using the computer. I only download music.

To tackle a Virus all you need is a block of ice, a tooth-pick, a wedding ring, a bottle cap dipped in warm water for 6 seconds, and a rubber duck.
Ok, maybe thats a different kind of virus. I don't think that'll help my computer at all.

The anti-virus that the technician gave me is symantec. It's really effective. It keeps intercepting viruses and spyware, so far, I don't have anymore problems. My computer is blazing fast again!

Congratulations, you are now using the same program that my computer-illiterate blonde sister uses. Norton is no longer a great beast of antivirus software, it's too easy to use nowadays.

I have one know I think. I got it from LimeWire -_-

Other than that, When I had to use my moms computer, Her's was always filled with them. We had to constantly reformat our computer. I was never happy about that... Loss of files.. Not my cup of tea...

Spy Sheriff did the same to me, until I've succesfully indentified 50 trojans/spyware/viruses/worms.

Reinstalling it all helped very much. Should of done it anyway, before. [happened 2 years ago]

Mhm, I used to have a lot viruses. However, ever since I've installed and kept updated my AVG and CCleaner programs, viruses haven't been of any bother to me. Also, taking Digital Communications and CET class has helped too. I don't really trust LimeWire. =/

Yeah, I guess it's good being used by someone as you say, a computer illiterate. BUt it is the same program that my MOM's office uses so I guess it is trustworthy.

And yeah, prevention is really better than a cure. My 5 hour encounter (details above) could have been avoided if my old anti-virus was good. And I guess you can say that preventing cancer is way easier than curing it.

Yeah, my friend said that I probably got those viruses from Limewire.

I just hate viruses and spyware, I mean, why were they even created if they just cause people headaches?
