Sad or Happy?
This seems uselessly simple....but I guess happy, sad endings suck...mostly because when I go with my GF she cries..and then she tries to make me cry with her sooo....ya.

I'm leaning more towards happy endings, but, in the end, it really, REALLY depends of the manga, both genre-wise and story-wise.
For taking some examples of sad endings, the first ones who come to my mind are Hidamari no Ki (by Osamu Tezuka) and Shikeishû 042 (by Yua Kotegawa). Their sad ending concluded those series perfectly, and I seriously don't think an happy ending would have fit, considering both series were filled with emotion and tragedy.
On the other hand, light-hearted romance series and simple, and good-hearted shônen series would have, for most of them, a rather strange feeling if their ending was sad. Examples that come to my mind are Midori Days, Mirumo and Love Hina for the romance ones, and Samurai Deeper Kyo, MÄR, Devil & Devil and Captain Tsubasa for the Shônen ones.
EDIT : Whooops, just realized this topic was on the Romance board, not on the General Manga board. Anyway, most of what I said holds. Just want to add that, for Romance in particular, it IMO depends of the mood of the series, and the way the mangaka writes it. If it's obviously light-hearted, an happy ending is the way to go ; an emotional and tragic one has better chances of being nicely concluded if the ending is sad or bitter-sweet.

I'm going to say both. Sad endings make it more epic and dramatic, whereas happy endings just make you feel better after the end. BUT, the endings that I love most are the ones with thrillery twists at the end. Watch the Elfen Lied ending that was the kind I like.
I loved the more upsetting endings like Chrno Crusade, Gungrave and Final Fantasy X, But I also Liked happy endings such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Rozen Maiden. Another really awesome and epic one is from my favourite Anime X~ Clamp.

Happy. Sad ones make me depressed xD Well it depends on the anime and who the artist/writer is. If I watch a sad ending, lets say for example, Cowboy Bebop, It makes me sad to think that Spike...
Sad ones make me feel bad =( Gotta be happy endings though...only if they're 'right' though. E.g.Some things have 'got' to be happy hehe
I'll also love you tomorrow and the day after. I'll always love you...
Definitely happy for animes I like. But sad endings for animes that aren't just my cup of tea.
Oh, Hi-deeki, imagine... your kind not eating raw fish! ^_^
This would really depend on the story line of the anime itself.
But, I guess I'm more of a happy ending girl.
If something's too sad, I'll end up crying like a sap.
There's nothing wrong with a sad ending, I actually like some sad ones better than a few happy ones. Yet, at the end of the day, I think I'd always chose the happier ending.
i like sad endings... or endings that are sad, but a bit happy. happy-happy endings are so generic. i'm thinking of chick flicks here. in every single one, the girl gets the guy, life is good, la-dee-da! it can get to be very annoying. However, sad endings are different, depending on the movie. with chick flicks, the middle may be different from others, but the ending is basically the same. with sad movies, the endings are different, because they go with the middle (does that make any sense?). my favourite movie is Crying Out Love, in the Centre of the World. It has a beautiful sad-but-almost-happy ending! How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days probaly would have made my top-five favourite movies list, but the ending is so generic, it kind of ruins the rest of the movie.
oh, is this question about anime? well, same answer

Therefore it is."-Kino no Tabi
I like the ones that are sad, but then something unusual happens and it turns out to be happy or mysterious. Or when it's a sad ending, but it feels much more complete or satisfying that way. And then theres those endings that seem very positive and content, but they're actually pretty depressing. Ex. Elfen Lied, Cowboy Bebop, Voices Of A Distant Star.
Sad endings. All to do the anime fan cry... of emotion...

Well, it depends a lot of what kind of anime serie it is, but mostly I like happy endings. If you follow a persons struggle threw a lot of episodes just to see them.. for example die in the last episodes just makes me so sad >_>
Happy endings are the best but I suppose there are animes that can't have other than very sad ending. But I hate when they make anime from some manga with different ending and make sad one.
I am telling you, a romance anime cannot end sadly without me in tears.
But sad endings are good too, if they fit the plot, I really like them.
Plus for some strange reason I love animes that make me cry. XD

I just like endings that fit. Tragedies are awesome, especially if you end up loving the characters. Deus ex Machina moments really SCREW up the flow and darkness that some animes have [see Mai-Hime]. However, if the anime is upbeat then a happy ending is appropriate but most of my favourite anime have sad endings I guess.
I'm really against sad or tragic endings. I mean, if it fits the story, then I can understand it, but when theres a love interest that never seems to get brought together during the series, than I'm mad. I won't name animes, but theres one in particular that upset me with the ending and in my opinion just felt like a way for the writers to eventually go back and do more with it when they feel like it instead of just ending it and moving on.
And I know of one series that has a tragic ending that is one of the best animes ever, so like I said, sometimes it works since its really the only way it can end.
I want to go into more detail, but don't want to spoil anything. Oh well lol
i would probably prefer the happy ending because i hate bad endings and surprises!

Who doesn't like a happy ending? I myself enjoy the warm, fuzzy feeling inside when there's a happy ending!
But of course, I do enjoy the drama of a sad ending, you know, one that really makes you think. Overused example, but Romeo & Juliet is an example of a VERY sad ending, despite the fact that the fued between the families has ended.

endings that seem like they will end happily, but turn out ending sadly.
A example is X.
I prefer this is because its more realistic. Sad, but true.
where the world is saved
and the star dies
I like it that way
Sad will do
On a hot summer night would u offer ur throat to the wolfwith theRED ROSES
I prefer both. (Since it never says you can't do that.)
It depends on the anime plot...There's nothing wrong with an 'happy' ending since people watching get the same happy feeling too but the 'sad' ending sometimes deal with the reality of things and that not every-thing is all 'oh now that we're together, nothing could go wrong.'
♥Thanks Mira Kaiba for the super fantabulous set.♥♥Akito/Agito/Lind obsessed fangirl♥
I have to say, as many have already said, that it depends on the anime/manga's storyline as to whether or not I would prefer a happy or sad ending. However, I'm not really inclined to either, and I try to enjoy the both of them if they're good enough to bring out a deep enough reservoir of emotion, for lack of a better term, that makes me feel as though I spent my time and money well.
My thanks to Xey Oiz for the awesome new set.

Happy endings. I dislike sad endings and I dislike unnecessary character death/sacrifice/whatever. Although it depends how invested I've become in the characters and their fortunes. Ironically I have more issue with Omi's ending in WK-Gluehen than I do Aya's, so...
On the whole though I prefer happy endings.
