    Default Prosthesis?

Given the acceleration of technology today, how far do you think we are today from the kind of prosthesis and cybernetic implants we see on a show like Ghost in the Shell: SAC?

    i don't think we're close at all
    i mean
    its fiction

but i understand what you're trying to compare
but I'm not sure our technology would stretch as far.
    even if it did
I'm not entirely sure someone would try and pull off similar things compared to ghost in a shell: SAC.

    good question though
I'm like dumb, so do what you will with my comment
slag me off, I'm used to it ^^

It would be a nice change from the ordinary but like Joee said technology wouldn’t go that far. We would probably all be dead from global warming by the time technology could get that far

I was just thinking on it, considering we already have prosthetic arms and legs that react to nerve impulses, artificial hearts, we're furthering the development of artificial "eyes". I'd say the technology is no more than 50 years away (if we take it that far). I was just wanting some second opinions, thanks.

    ahhh! i see your point.
but eyes are such a complicated thing to replicate
arms and legs are far simpler than that. (probably)
    although
maybe in... hundreds (or thousands; if it goes that extreme) of years
    that might be possible.
but not while we're alive it wont.
    50 years, i don't think so.
    but others might.
I'm not the brightest person ever xD

this is achieved by redirecting nerves to a muscle - even with that kind of prosthetic limbs moving is limited, so we haven't even reached the level of fullmetal alchemist (automail). in order to achieve the GITS technology, we must first completely understand how human brain works (well, at least some parts of it), then find a way to adjust the prosthetic limbs to receive the proper "output" from it.

and yeah, i believe this would be possible in about 50 years if experimenting on humans was legal, so what do you think should be done with death convicts :P but no, we haven't even reached the level of death note

Most of the major innovations of the recent century were made originally for military purposes, like atomic energy (the bomb), and the Internet. I think when this kind of technology reaches a level where the military starts to take an interest (by all accounts it already has), the speed of development in that area will accelerate. Any medical benefits will sadly be an afterthought, in all probability.

Thank you for bringing that up, I didn't mention that although the GITS story line takes place around 23 years from now, two major wars have taken place that haven't taken place in our world. I'm sure these events might have had something to do with the tech development.

I think it's safe to say we as a species will be long dead before we achieve such heights.

it's a scary thought that a handful of people who control 90% of the worlds wealth will make decisions that will eventually kill us all.

But it sure would be good. Best case scenario ( meaning we don't nuke or genetically-alter-super-bug ourselves to death ) I think it would be 200 years off minimum.

    How do I get 200?

We have been have been driving cars since the model T my friend. Sure they are nicer and have more luxuries - but really - it's still the same old' 4 wheels and some seats. Not too much has changed.

Stem cells seem to be under-promising. The ability to re-grow tissues. That seems to be the direction things are heading.

As far as cars go, look at the major stock-holders in most major car companies (especially in the U.S.) and tell me who they are (profiting oil-companies). The use of prosthetics although in the show are used to repair damaged bodies, they're are often gained for occupational use. Tissue regeneration wouldn't do anything in allowing people from Section 9 that have key prosthetics to do they're job. Even if we're not talking about cyberazation, but just getting a cyber-brain, legs, arms, or other apendages.

Oh yes. I could talk cars and the horrible evil the oil companies / car companies have bread in our world..

I *love* cars - but to think of all the "alternate methods" that the oil companies have bought up and got rid of to keep the green rolling in from oil..
I can personally vouch for witnessing one such act - PM if you'd like to hear about it. It's long.

    Interesting topic though.

It is taught that this is true in sociology. Our major advances in technology are always to kill each other more efficiently/grandiosely.
