Default Electric, Classic or Acoustic guitar?

I want to buy a guitar, since mine broke (into half!), and it was a cheap and low quality one. Now, I'm a bit confused. Should I buy an electric or acoustic guitar? I'm still a beginner though, but I played it quite well. I thought of an acoustic, but my friend offered me an electric with the whole set. (Except the stereo set. So I need to buy one myself.) Acoustic is much more cheaper though, but the electric one is quiet descent. A classic one doesn't make a big difference, except for the strings. 3 of them are nylon. So, which one shall I choose?

If the choice is electric, I've thought of buying an Ibanez. If it's acoustic or classic, I'll buy a Yamaha one.

If you have the place to make all that noise with an electric, go for it.

My dad is a guitar player, he's got four acoustics and one electric guitar. When I tried to learn to play the guitar, I found it alot tougher to learn with an electric than an acoustic. Needless to say, I sort of gave up learning (props to anyone who is self-taught, it's difficult!)

But I say start with an acoustic. Then when you wanna turn up the jamz and pump up the volume, consider an electric.

@Saint Seiya: I live in an apartment, but I'll move to a villa. So I won't have any probs.

    @Tsuna: I'm also self-teaching myself. So hard! I'll consider. ^^

Acoustic guitar even bad ones sound good and they are more useful in blackout cheaper to buy and keep and they are all you need to play. You could always try an Acoustic-Electric but they are madly priced.

I'm self taught, but I'm amazing so yeah. I learned on electric, easier imo if you have a good one and an amp.

I'm no expert on guitars, but I think they are quite different (different sounds), even when tuned to sound similar. If you have been playing on an acoustic, continue with acoustic. You can't expect to get good on an electric overnight.

I use acoustic but I'd like to try an electric. Therefor, I'm a little biased and I say acoustic XD! Mine is a Takamine, so it's nothing fancy, but it's a pretty decent guitar. I personally recommend an acoustic, but since you're not new, perhaps an electric is right for you.

Yeah, pretty much the same reccomendation for me. Acoustic guitars are a bit simpler and have a different sound, but electric guitars look better and are more impressive, in my opinion xD
I say you should go with the electric, but thats just my preference.

Acoustic guitars are not simpler than an electric...they're the same. People who tell you to learn on an electric must not know much about the common entry level acoustic guitar. The action is ALWAYS terrible (action is the strings distance from the fretboard) it's always SO high up and makes it really hard to play. Electric guitars can have this problem, but it's MUCH simpler to fix than an acoustic. Also, most common entry level squier stratocasters have excellent action and are VERY good for beginners and even pros. Some squiers are amazing, mine was.

I learned on a squier strat, it's definitely the way to go. Unless you're planning on playing mostly acoustic and maybe a little electric then learn on an acoustic, but if you're gonna balance or play all electric, start on an electric.

I used to mess around with my friend's brother's electric guitar. It was fun, but it was too hard for me to learn how to play it properly.

    ummmmmmmm ok...
acoustic guitar idk.. its just acoustic you get 1 single sound off it.. unless its one of those electric acoustics.. (they sound great with overdrive or distortion)
but id go with an electric guitar if i was you, just because not only can you use effects pedals but it also can play acoustic tones...
but then again it depends what kind of guitar it is...
epiphone or gibson guitars have great acoustic sounds (not so great with dist. and OD)
and a fender guitar isnt a great sounding acoustic, but with distortion a fender is greatness...
so yeah if your getting an acoustic electric i say go for it...
but if not i say just go for the electric , its like acoustic plus...

PS: those classic guitars with the nylons strings are pretty awsomeness...
but acoustic with strait up reg. strings sound a bit better...

Well, I'm gonna compose a song. It's an alternate-rock type. I guess I need an electric? But I need to practice more on my skills. An electric won't do. Will an acoustic or classic guitar that can be plugged do?

I play acustic guitar. It is a white and brown guitar that can be plugged into an amp.

Yea, it can be turned into electic if you plug it. (?)

I've only played classic guitar back in elementry school. I was also in the dang after school chorus! -_-; I learned a little classic guitar, but I like electric guitars better! Never heard of Acoustic guitars, btw.

It's the ones that have the last 3 strings made out of nylon.

I'm no expert on guitars, but I think they are quite different (different sounds), even when tuned to sound similar. If you have been playing on an acoustic, continue with acoustic. You can't expect to get good on an electric overnight.

    *remembers phailed air guitar attempts*

They do have different sounds. You can modify the sounds in electric.

Hey, air guitar is not that hard! LOL

I have been playing for roughly 2 years so here goes.

both are a good decisions and it would be advisable to get both, but it really depends what your want to be able to do with guitar. As a beginner who can't even guarantee interest will last much longer the acoustic is a better choice since it is more affordable, where with the electric you'll find you want a amp and you'll probably be tempted to buy all sort of pedal and cool stuff. Acoustics are also better to learn on and your chance of developing bad habits with them is drastically decreased. Electrics though are a fine choice as well especially since you can learn all kinda of cool tricks you can't do on a acoustic(but are a little to advanced for the beginner to even be concerned with). All in all though if you just want to fiddle around knowing one or two song and having it mostly for show than the electric is the better choice. If your serious about learning and becoming really good the acoustic is the way to go, of course you'd eventually get an electric to.

As for the classical well do you play classical music and sit in the classical position? If yes than that what you want.

I thought so myself. The classical guitar is not for classical music. ^^; It's similar to acoustic, but the last 3 strings are nylon.

It is still advised that whatever kind of guitar you play to adopt the classical position. Since it's the only right one (even if you stand up straight with no chairs, pile of books and so on helping you),

I've started with a Classical one. Never had problems with those so popular referred 'bad habits'. And besides 5 chords I learned from a music teacher I'm also self taught.

But of course I wanted better, and got a cheap electric one which is surprisingly very resistent.

If you intend to write rock songs, you should get some musical theory into your head if you don't already have that. [Advisable to learn on classicals/acoustics]. Not to forget that rock songs... demand... effects [distorstion, overdrive,...]. In conclusion an electric would be recommended.

So, get to choose cool tria!
