Downloaded Manga Vs. Paperback Manga

This is the Age old Debate between Manga lovers everywhere. My argument is that Manga loses its charm when it is scaned and you are forced to read it on a screen. theres nothing like when you buy a new book and you open it to embrase that new book smell ahhhh. anyway thats my opinion. i understand that some people can afford manga (only 14~10$ a book ya cheapy ) but if you can afford 50$ a week for internet theres rufly 5 books right there.

IMO,
Reading manga in the latest issue magazine in all its the rough, cheap paper, fresh-off-the-line glory > manga published in book form > scanned manga.

Thankfully, manga is one of the very rare items that is actually cheaper to buy in Japan than elsewhere (I guess because of the fuss to get it translated), about 5~7 dollars (?) in yen, so price is rarely an issue for me.

Don't know who pays $50 a WEEK for internetz but it really depends to me whether to download or buy. Usually if I really love the series i'll buy it but some I just DL to find out the differences between the manga and anime or to pass time

Paperback.... even if it's pricey, I like to take the pride in actually OWNING it.

Even if I only have 3 at the moment -_- did i mention they were pricey x.x

that depends on the manga. I often DL a chapter or two to se if the manga is good then buy it. but sometimes u just can't resist to buy some random manga books just to find out if it's any good.

There was this one time when they sold the first boock of all series for 2 $ just to get more buyers. I bought one of every series they had ^_^
Thought I saved alot of money that day... It has cost me a small fortune to keep track of all thouse series but then again it's all worth it.

Paperback for sure! I'll only download manga if I can't wait for the new chapters, but yeah. Downloading may save trees, but it doesn't make the manga author any money that they deserve for working so hard!. D:

if you cant get it at a store you can order online, try ebay (its the safest). in my experiance. ive ordered from dogey websites

I'd probably go for normal paperback. Downloaded manga (if not already mentioned, did not read the other posts sorry) is just a waste of time to me. There's also the problems such as a virus alert attached to the file or unable to view a certain panel or the manga just isn't complete. If you're going to download something it should just plain anime episodes because it's much easier, and this is all in my opinion.

I don't think I've ever read manga online. It's hard enough reading the itty bitty squashed together furigana on some phrases as it is without that *lol* kanji isn't condusive to scanning particularly.

I noticed that when I did some scans from my M manga and the kanji was really really not clear but when I erased the kanji and translated it to English it was much clearer. I think they just use really fiddly size print in Japanese sometimes :S

I don't read English manga any more because I read it too fast, so online manga scanlations don't really interest me that much...

I hate reading or watching things on the PC anyhow though. So that's probably my bias too...

WHO the heck pays 50 dollars a week? That is exaggerated so largely it is comical.
And are you suggesting that one should cancel their internet service and disconnect with the world to pay for five manga? hehe.

But yes, no exaggeration required, it is nice to own a manga.
I purchase all of mine - however, I do so grudgingly. It should cost like 5$ at the most. I am just lucky to have a good job.

I pay 50$ (Australian Dollers) a week cose i live in Aus the laggyes country in the world (refering to internet ) and yes I'm suggesting that internet is a worthy trade for manga

Load each page? most people who download, download a soft copy wich can be opened in your normal windows pic viewer. Anyway, I figured i should offer atleased one positive for download (theres not meny though ). with download you dont have to worry about "Flipped Manga" *Spits* .

I enjoy both.

Downloaded manga offers an up to date story, months further ahead than official translators. And the "It's easier to read it from a book" argument doesn't make sense if you're using an image viewer (online reading notwithstanding). Unless you're supporting some half baked group, quality shouldn't be a concern either.

The actual books are obviously bound and read like they were supposed to be, so you don't have to read chapter by chapter, week by week. Not like I don't support the franchises either, as I buy everything I possibly can. Usually a book a week or two. They're really only owned to say that I have them, since I rarely go back to read anything more than once or twice. It is kinda nice seeing everything stacked up and in order though.

Reading online by the way, is similar to watching anime streamed. At least check out who actually took the time and effort to translate the thing for you eh?

Yup, same here. I just love actually buying it and reading it! I love the smell of a fresh book every now and then! I'm not weird! I don't have a problem! But when oppurtunity comes, I never hesitate to seize it!

Just like with Anime, I do both for Manga. I DL and buy. I'm an avid reader and I spend about $100.00 a WEEK on books, at Books-a-million and Barnes & Noble. (I'm a member of both Bookstores.) I buy so many at each bookstore that the sales people there know me by name. I also buy on-line. But on that occasion when I'm traveling and at some business meeting at some strange location, I'll get out my laptop and just DL some manga.
When I first saw the anime Read or Die, Yomiko Readman reminded me of myself. I wear glasses, and my hair was about her length at the time and I really do buy an insane amount of books like she does.
So, trust me when I say I do support the Bookstores!

Believe it or not there are certain fiber optic Internet services that can cost up to $200 per month. I'm certain the 54 Mbps peak transfer rate is well worth the cost, but it can get quite pricey.

On topic: I prefer paperback. There's nothing that compares with the feeling of holding a book in your hands and reading it. You can also take manga with you on the go, and read it wherever. They tend to be pretty cheap anyhow.

I don't enjoy reading lots of pages on a screen, but if it's a few it's not too bad. But print manga just can't be beat and is always the most enjoyable
