I'm still the Hustleman.
Xenosaga, Wild Arms, Growlanser, Megami Tensei and Grandia series
I would have to say Final Fantasy, GTA, Rainbow Six and Scarface.

Disgaea 1 and 2. Really really great tactical rpgs, the art is done like an anime. Can get over a hundred hours of game play out of each game if you want to. The story is cool for each, pretty funny too.

Well it really depends what you are afters - most of the above are good/great titles appreciated my many - but do you want racing games, shooters, tactical ops, RPG?
any way - to give you some early hints: Xenosaga is a great series of games as are Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII (X-2 is not their best game ever, playable, but not the best by a very very long shot - and rather poor)
(also note that the final fantasy games really show what the PS2 is capable of in the graphics department - worthy games!)

Okami (love this game), Devil May Cry (mainly 3), Guitar Hero (mainly 2), Xenosaga, Shadow of the Colossus, Tekken 5, and Tales of the Abyss.
I don't really like God of War (too repetitive, too short, not nearly as complex as Devil May Cry), but you may like it.
It all really depends on what kind of games you like. I can recommend some more if you say what your looking for.

Final Fantasy X - Luc this RPG, (I wish I had a PS3 I'd get the other titles)
Devil May Cry 3 - Adventure/Action (but short...)
Resident Evil Code Veronica X - Horror, Shooting Game, Logic, (nice puzzles, scary...) one of my favourites! Long if you're stuck
Tomb Raider: Legend - Short, but amasing graphics. Love the games (I have all the titles lol...)
A lot of good selections mentioned already but heres a few that weren't.
Odin Sphere - great action/rpg game a bit of slow down at times but it doesn't get any better looking then this on PS2
Ratchet & Clank - Every game in this series is wonderful great mix of action and comedy
La Pucelle - best turn based strategy game to come out for the ps2 in my humble opinion

Some decent role playing games I have played lately.
