What is the best anime?

I have only been watching dragonball z so far, and I really enjoyed it I think it is a great action packed anime. Anyway, I'm now looking for another great anime equivalent to the excellence of dragonball z.

What anime/manga can you recommend me to start to watch?

Most animes beat DBZ in quality. They use that annoying 3 frames method, and reuse shots constantly. Anyways, pick any anime out there, that's all I can say, maybe Yu Yu Hakasho(wrong spelling, sorry I'm sick right now).

There is no such thing as the BEST anime, but in how it is the best to their opinions. In my opinion, i think that:

If you like dragonball z you should try bleach.

Hmm in terms of an actioner type of anime I really recommend Ruroni Kenshin.

But in terms of pure recommendations based solely on my taste.
1.) Legend of the Galactic Heroes: While it has a lot less action than DBZ it has probably the most in depth plot and well developed characters I have seen in any anime, ever. And I've been watching anime for around 13 years.

2.) Monster: The grand daddy of anime psychological thrillers, Monster has an excellent sense of suspense and building of tension. And cliffhangers up the wazoo.

3.) Death Note: It has a great plot, and excellent characters. Furthermore its intelligent and gradual progression makes for great viewing.

Some good ideas have been posted already. DBZ was my first anime, I loved it, so here are two others with similar styles that I saw afterwards and loved too and would be my first recommendations for a DBZ fan

1. Berserk: oh my god this was awesome. I think it's only 26 episodes but it's amazing.
2. Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (also known as Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen) This is only a 4 episode OVA (an OVA is like a movie) but it's kickass. SGI mentioned Rurouni Kenshin which is a good series and I enjoyed it and I agree it's probably the most similar to DBZ in it's style, however the Rurouni Kenshin OVA that I just mentioned is much bloodier whereas the TV series is less mature.

At least Bleach has some character depth behind the constant butt-kicking. I wouldn't watch it over and over, but I can watch it without throwing things at the screen...DBZ used to drive me nuts when it was on Toonami.

Though granted I never saw it in it's pure Japanese unadulterated form, so I may be biased :S

Bad editing/censoring/cutting is an anime series' worst enemy, seriously...

Well,the best anime for me,now,is Pretear because it has a great story,interesting characters and it has romance,comedy,drama and fantasy.Beside this one I like also Blood+,it has also a great story and interesting characters,I know that it's bloody in some episodes but it didn't scared me and it is the "horror" anime that I like the most.And it isn't finish yet,I have a list of animes which I like but the most i like were mentioned up.This is my list:
