despite the fact that this thread will probably die at the same time as the other -- I will get in and say -- Otters are far better than hamsters - in all areas!

otters might be a tad bigger, but they are considerable more playful than hamsters!

Having said that, I must say "river otters" given the choices of small mammals.
hmm getting specific - I would go for the Eurasian otter - if a pet were a consideration - they are more amenable to taming.
