Question Organ Donation or Organ Harvasting?

I was reading the news yesterday and I came across some articles on this very subject. Below is one of the articles I came across
    PM Backs Automatic Donations
While I understand the need to increase the donor pool, I disagree with making the programme an opt out one. In Kansas, all you need to do is sign the back of your driver's license to show that you are willing to donate your organs. And I think that's the way it is across the US.
I feel it's adding too much of a conflict of interest if you're demanding that hospitals meet a donation quota. Are they going to start letting people die so they can use their organs?
    So what do you think?
Do you have a strong opinion?
Or do you think mandatory donations are better?

I think(after reading the article) that THEY HAVE ISSUES. I know that donating organs is a nice thing but doing those kinds of things have limits. Donating just means that technically you are dying for someone else you don't know.

    What I think...
-scratches head- I'm not that smart to fully understand the article but I can understand just about enough... I think...

Problem is that the government is thinking of this tactic as a guilt one - opting off requires not only the effort of signing off (hard to do when you are unconsious) but also something that is soically not easy to admit to. Doctors and people staring at you as you make the choice - for yourself or for a close one who is unable to do so.
Its the wrong tactic to choose in this situation - however the government can swing the higher moral ground argument on opposing groups - that makes this difficult to fight

I'm keeping my organs! No way when I die that someone else is using my heart! I want to be buried with all my organs with me! For others, go ahead and donate, but for me, I prefer to be complete in life and in death!

When I die, I plan to donate my organs, definitely. They could save one or more lives and besides, it's not like I'm gonna be using them anymore o.O However, letting people die to use their organs for donation is just defeating the purpose, isn't it? Kill one to let another live? That's just going in circles, if you think about it.

Kitsune-girl, the doctors/hospitals aren't killing anyone...yet. I was only saying that the potential for that sort of abuse will be there, especially, if they mandate quotas for the hospitals.
As to my personal feelings on donating, I'm already on the list for bone marrow donations, but I'm rather partial to keeping my entire body intact. Bone marrow will regrow and I don't have to die to donate that to someone.

thats a good point about mandate quotas Myrra - just look at the mess they are doing to the police force and to schools. Exteneding it to organ harvesting would really put the wrong mindest into the job

Using quotas is wrong in too many ways, it brings too many possibilities and room for unjust and unethical behavior in hospitals.

I believe the true long term solution to this is to give more funds to the research on cloning our own organs. Then there would be no such thing as a waiting list for organs, a waiting list for a decent life.

No, I will not give my organs to a stranger. Who knows what this person is really like, I could be extending the life of a serial killer for all I know. If it was someone that I love, then maybe.

    --

i think the better way to go is to sell my body parts instead... i mean that means even after death those who love me.. or er.. i love can still benefit from me.. ne?...

Here, whenever you sign up for a driver's license/learner's permit, they just have a section labeled "Would you like to be an organ donor?" and you check yes or no. (I personally know that there's an organ shortage, along with a blood shortage, so on the off-chance that I die in a car accident, I feel like at least my dead body should be put to good use.) Making it an opt-out is stupid, though. Some people have religious convictions about donating blood or organs (Roman Catholics and Jehovah's Witnesses come to mind), and singling them out is borderline illegal (leave it to Kansas...).

PSA: If you're going to bad-rep me, do these three things.
    1. Learn which one is bad-rep. Green=good.
    2. Grow a pair and tell me to my face. Average amount that I check reputation: About once every three weeks or so.
    3. Sign the bad rep. At least have the guts to announce that it was you.

Not quite sure where you were going with that, but I'm reasonably certain you didn't follow the link and read it. Cos if you had, you'd know this debate is in the UK, not Kansas. I was merely pointing out that in Kansas and most if not all the states in the US, you merely have to sign your DL to give consent for organ donation.
I just find the concept of an opt out programme reprehensible. I really don't care what they do in Spain. Like my mother always said, "just cos Suzy or little Johnny do that doesn't mean you can or should." I think Spain's wrong. And I think the UK is wrong if they think they should follow suit.

I don't think donations should be mandatory or have set quotas.Donating organs is a person's individual will in my opinion.Giving people the right to decide if a person should donate their organs or not violates their rights. This is just how I see it.

Personally, while I'm living I am completely willing to donate things like blood and bone marrow, but not major organs. However, when I die they can donate my organs as they wish.I would have no purpose for them then and they be able to save a life.
    But that's just me.

First off, organ donation isn't a simple process here in the US. One has to die under a certain number of circumstances for their organs to be considered for donation. You are in no danger of someone "letting you die" for the sake of scooping out your organs.

That said though I don't think there should even be an option. Once you're dead your organs are useless to you (some of us even while we're still alive) I for one welcome my kidneys or lungs or liver or whatever being cut our and attached to someone else. What am I gonna use em for?

My understanding is that the "Organ Donor" check on the license actually means very little when it comes to actually taking said organs. It's still up to your spouse or family to make that decision. They can refuse even if it was clearly your wishes.

Fabala, that's why there are (sporadic) campaigns to remind people when checking the donor box on their DL to talk to their families about their wishes. After all, if it's important to you, then it's something that should be spoken of before an unforeseen event keeps your wishes from being fulfilled.

People only really tend to think of these things when something happens close to home. I became a bone marrow donor when a little boy in my home town was dying from leukaemia. His family was trying desperately to find him a match. Sadly, though they tested hundreds of people, they didn't find a match for him in time.

If it hadn't been for that little boy, I never would've considered putting myself on the registry.

That's what I mean though. Checking that box doesn't give rights to doctors to start removing organs as they wish. Seems lots of people think it does. It's great to sign up as a donor, but it actually takes a little more effort than that.

    I'm trying to get past my needle shyness and start donating blood (came close once, but was rejected due to a medication I was on at the time). I have that highly sought after type O-negative. That's a start for me anyway ^^;
