Best generic item
This is of utmost academic interest: What is the best generic item?
I personally hold foobars superior to other generic items. Mainly because they sound like they could be made out of chocolate.

Thingamajig and it's more active cousin the Thingamajigger beat out Thingy by a fairly narrow margin.
I always thought Foobar was a bastardization of FUBAR, and a descriptor.

The thingy. It's easy to pronounce. Just add 'y' to 'thing' and voila, you get a 'thingy'.
"Thingy", becuase it's the only one of the choices that I actually use while talking/writing in english and has a more or less translation in spanish.

Thingy and whatchamacallit are the two that I use and hear most often. Though I can't say I've actually ever heard foobar. Exactly how would that be used?
I mainly use "thingamajig".I don't really have a reason.It's just a habit.
I always say thingamabob, however I do also say the "whateverthatthingis"... but that's a bit long. I say those, or I just blank XD!

"The thingy" was as close as I was going to get to my usual generic item name: "The Thinger," or "The doowacky." But usually it's something like, "That thing, that does the one function, or holds the one place, that I know about."
And foobar sounds a lot like FUBAR (F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition for those who don't know the lingo). My favorite pairing to that word is SNAFU, Situation Normal, All Fouled (-nudge-) Up.
