    Default Philosophical/post modern anime?

I am looking for anime with deep philosophical or post modern dialogue such as in Evangelion or Metal Gear Solid 2 (game for those of you who know) Anime that raises a lot of questions and gives long winded philosophical answers, not afraid to cut the action for some deeper ponderings. Don't reommend anime like Gundam, I am looking for shows that feature far greater intellectual depth then your average series.

    Can you recommend any?

I've heard Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Rahxephon are like that. Would you recommend those and what others do you know?

Doesn't matter how obscure the anime is.

Actually, those three are excellent choices. Definitely recommend them all.

    Especially Rahxephon.

Anyway, Paranoia Agent was a relatively deep show. A lot of commentary on the nature of celebrity and what not, wrapped around a decent story.

Yeah, Serial Experiments Lain is decent.

You might want to go for FLCL if you haven't. Although it is at it's most superficial a comedy, there is actually a lot of subtle commentary on society, growing up, and otaku culture. Kind of an acquired taste, though.

Akira and Ghost in the Shell are a given. If you haven't seen them, do. At any cost.

Uhhh... Drawing a blank. I don't really go for anime much anymore... How about Death Note? It's not really explicitly philosophical, but the story is brilliant and has inspired many an evil laugh from myself, which is not an easy task.

Maybe Ghost Hound would work for whatever you are looking for. But I also highly vote for Paranoia Agent.
    *Asks friend what he suggests*
He says Ergo Proxy....and Ghost in the Shell....Lain..."Yes, yes, we already said Lain...." and other stuff that's been mentioned. But that's a start.

    Ghost Hound sounds interesting.

I hear a lot about Akira. How would you sum it up if you could, what is it about where does it's more thought provoking side come from?

    Thanks.

Oh yeah, Ive seen Ghost in the Shell and GiTS 2, both were great. For any of you who know Xenogears the game (much similarity to Evangelion) that is also something I am looking similar shows for.

Gundam is the father of all philosophical deep meaning mecha anime, so you can't get past it.

But of course, not every Gundam series. It should be safe to say "leave out all AUs" (though there are AUs that fit the description).

    The term "philosophical" seems to be thrown around too much. Although technically one could get away with it, as most themes can be given depth from the right point of view, I personally only attach the term to only anime that explore the topic indepth. Out of what I've seen, I'd reccomend the following;

Ergo Proxy, makes it easy but not being as subtle as others.

Elfen Lied, looks into the nature of violence,

    Berserk, Exmaines goals

Wolf's rain, similar to berserk in theme, except a little more in-depth.

Serial Experiments: Lain, I'm not going to say anything about this, as they way one interprets it depends solely one him/her.

Also, if you're willing to get your head blown off, invest in some hallucinogens and (re)watch Evangelion.

    How about Patlabor and Jin-Roh?

As usual watch the suggested ones, like Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Elfen lied, Serial Experiments Lain and Paranoia Agent.

    Akira.

Although Urusei Yatsura is a comedy series, it's second film, Beautiful Dreamer is pretty damn deep and artsy.

Also i heard Noir is something like that.

    Also Perfect Blue, Psychological thriller.

I know I'm repeating some people but you can't highlight enough...
Serial Experiments Lain...just start with it..
If you really pay attention, I promise you at least 15 mins of reflection after watching each episode...it truly is a masterpiece

I think most of these have been recommended so far - but here is my list..

    1.) Ghost In The Shell
    2.) Ghost In The Shell 2 : Innocence ( *really* deep )
    3.) All three Patlabour Movies
    4.) Wings of Homenaise ( slow - but I loved it )
    5.) Gin-Roh ( freaken awsome )
    6.) Perfect Blue

Start with those. You will love them all.

Working with what hasn't been mentioned yet.

I would say Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni gets pretty deep around the end. If you can force yourself through all the cotton candy, it's an interesting exercise in the line betweeen good and evil, sanity and insanity. Like how far you can justify the actions of some of the main characters.

What I definitely want to recommend is the Kara No Kyoukai (Garden of sinners) OVA(s). It's about a young woman who can "see" the death of other people in the form of thin black lines on their bodies. The novels were pretty heavy handed on the pedantistry (from ponderings on mortality to Rudolf Steiner's Akashic Record, if you're into that kinda thing) and the animation was truly a gorgeous thing to behold.

Here's a trailer and MAD 'case you're interested.

Only one I can think of not listed would be .hack/sign. Its got a very complex story and unlike most its not a apocalyptic style anime.

Do you really care about what genre it fits into? Or even if the postmodernism is intended?

I'd like to think any genre can make you think if it's written well enough, but one won't glean it's meaning if they can't stand watching it right?

A couple that I haven't seen mentioned, and one reinforcement:

    Heroic Age: evolution, human nature

Dragonaut the Resonance: Love, supremecy complex

Elfen Lied: Death and the value of human life

Edit: Also, the appleseed movie has some PoMo to it as well.

These are only a couple, but tbh, if you look and listen/read hard enough, you will find what the author is trying to convey quite clearly. It's quite fun to get that little bit extra out of "ordinary" animes imo.

Seeing that this is probably going to fall on deaf ears, seeing that the person who posted this has not been on in a few months... just in case
Harmageddon, an older anime by Katsuhiro Otomo, and another that he is linked to... Spriggan (great action, then very in depth ending)
Someone already mentioned Jin Roh (a dark farrie tale come to life) and the Ghost in the Shell movies.. to further strengthen those prior recomendations, and the one Horofan/ElahRairah said above; Elfen Lied.

I just got done watching the whole Ergo Proxy series. Personaly it was a great and inspiring philosophical anime. It spoke of alot of shakespeare, and quotes from famous people. What I learned from this particular anime was to always trust your instincts, and to love yourself. I totally recommend this anime! ^.~
