    Default A moment of appreciation!

First of all, a small warning. This post is quite large, and I mean it. But if you actually take your time to read whats written you will surely learn something about Manga and Anime, at least more than you would by trying to speak pseudo-jap, acting like a wannabe catgirl or buying the Zabuza-Sword from Toys-R'-Us.

With this thread I'd like to appreciate 3 great mangakas that have made Anime to what it is today:

    Osamu Tezuka, Manga no Kami-sama

Osamu Tezuka is known as the "Father" or the "God" of Manga. At the moment of his death, his creations included over 700 manga with more than 150'000 pages!

Plotlines: Tezuka is the Father of Manga!
In the beginning, Mangas were condemned to be short stories such as those printed on Newspapers. Tezuka began to make longer manga that actually had a plot overtime and told vast stories with them, bringing manga out of the "Just for a laugh" image, he is the reason why mangas can have more than 4 panels of story and have deep plotlines, awesome fighting scenes etc. Tezuka's stories vary from tales for little children such as Tetsuwan Atomu (aka Astro-Boy) or Kimba to thrilling stories involving politics, such as Tell Adolf (A manga about 3 people named Adolf during WW II, a Jew, a Nazi and Hitler himself). With Tezuka, Manga and Anime became more serious business.

    Large Eyes: Tezuka made them!
Many typical traits and cliches in Anime and Manga, such as the "Large Eyes" style was invented by Osamu Tezuka. His vast amount of creations have layed a solid fundament for the developement of Manga and Anime to how we know them today.

    Go Nagai, Manga no Majin-sama

Nagai is truely the Devil among mangaka, not only being the one who made Demon King Dante, Devilman and Mazinger Z (Majin = Devil-God), but also being the one who has released the "Dark Side" within Manga and Anime by bringing violence and nudity to play!

Giant Robots: Nagai invented Mecha Anime!
However, he did not make the 1st robot or giant robot, as Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy) and Tetsujin 28 (aka Gigantor) were already around, but Mazinger Z was the 1st robot that fullfilled the common outlines of a "Mecha Anime", it featured a giant robot with a pilot who is actually inside the robot itself.

Violence: Nagai brought us blood and gore!
Manga and Anime were at first only for little children. Bloody scenes were near unthinkable, let alone people getting torn apart, decapated or sliced into bits! Nagais works were and are always at the limits. While Sailor Moon was busy throwing her tiara around, Nagai's Cutey Honey was stabbing stuff to death with swords. In Mazinger Z, he made a robot with feminine figure featuring boobs, which justified their existance by being missiles... talk about sex bombs! In Devilman, Nagai concluded that since Satan was a fallen angel, he had to have the body of an angel. Furthermore, angels are supposed to be more perfect beings than humans. Humans usually seek a soulmate, so Nagai concluded that humans are incomplete alone, while angels should not have this flaw... so the result of his deduction was that Satan must be a hermaphrodite and gave him a rather feminine appearance, a pair of boobs and got away with it!

    Nudity: Nagai invented Fan-Service!
The very 1st case of "Fan-Service" happened in his Creation "Cutey Honey", where the said heroine appears completely nude during her henshin (= transformation) sequence. With that, Nagai is the 1st to show hot chicks nude in an Anime. Wanna hear a fun story? Go Nagai's 1st creation was "Harenchi Gakuen" (=Shameless School), a manga about a school where all the boys peep, grope, flash and lift the clothes of girls... and vice versa! And the teachers are even worse! Back to that time, parental concernes and censorship were very strict. When Harenchi Gakuen was printed in Jump!, it was heavily controversal and considered "Explicite Sexual content". Eventually, as legal actions were imminent, Jump! announced the cancellation of Harenchi Gakuen, Nagai however, wouldn't go without a last coup, which consisted of the last episode of Harenchi Gakuen: He drew how all the characters of his manga got slaughtered by military forces while defending the school and their freedom of expression. In some way, Harenchi Gakuen may be considered as the Grandfather of "South Park", which appeared about 30 years later. Ironically, while Harenchi Gakuen was cancelled for containing explicite sexual content, Nagai himself was so young that he did not know about intercourse yet when he created the manga.

Nagai is responsible for the rise of Anime itself!
Uncle Go has showed the World something that we are experiencing everyday: An Anime can become extremely popular. Mazinger Z achieved the series' highest rating of 30.4%, making it one of the highest-rated anime series of all time, showing the World what Anime is capable of.

    Cliche? Nagai!
Nagai is responsible for many cliches of certain anime Genres or in general, especially that of Super Robot Anime, most notably fists and boobs being fired at enemies.

    Nagai Today:
In contrary to Tezuka, Nagai is not dead. He is still making stuff, most notably remakes and sequels to his old works such as Mazinkaiser, New Shin Getter Robo, Koutetsu Shin Jeeg as well as sequels and remakes as well as live-actions of Cutey Honey and Devilman! Nagais recent works have one thing in common: they barely have any plot beyond "good vs evil" and are overdone with unecessary violence and nudity. Half-*** Anime reviewers who think they have an idea about Anime often give him bad ratings because of this, calling his works "cliched and overdone". But that shows that they obviously have no idea of Go Nagai, who is simply keeping it real, the things are cliched because he invented these cliches, and nudity and violence exist in Anime at all just because he overdid it back then.

    Yoshiyuki Minagoroshi no Tomino, Ikimasu!

Yoshiyuki Tomino has made the longest and definitely one of the greatest sci-fi mecha anime ever: Mobile Suit Gundam. Note that this has nothing to do with Gundam Wing or Gundam SEED, which cower in shame in front of the original. In fact, it is safe to say that most famous mangaka today are or were to some point fans of the original Mobile Suit Gundam! This includes the makers of Naruto, Trigun and many more, something that these mangaka often show in their works. Don't believe me? Check it out further below!

Death: Tomino invented the accute lacking of plot armor!
While deaths were once reserved to nameless, random bystanders and opponents or epic/moving moments, Tomino would kill off his characters all the time, regardless of importance. Even many main characters would fall victim to this habit, and while you would expect most love stories to have a happy ending, Tomino's works may just feature one or both of the couple to die off half-way through the series, earning him the nickname Minagoroshi no Tomino (="Kill 'em all!" Tomino).

The Universal Century: Tomino brought us Gundams!
Yoshuyuki Tomino is the creator of Mobile Suit Gundam, originally intended to be yet another anime where giant robots blatantly fight eachother. However, Tomino had enough of that and made a story with a complex universe, deep plot and layed the foundation for the original Gundam Universe: The Universal Century, known for its high plot depth and vast amount of sidestories. If you thought Gundam Wing or SEED are awesome and have deep plots and character developement, you probably don't know the Universal Century well enough. The Original Mobile Suit Gundam was what set the basics of a Sci-Fi "Realistic Robot" anime, bringing a never before seen plot and realism in Anime.

Gotta spot em all! Gundam is everywhere!
Various mangaka have grown up with Mobile Suit Gundam undoubtably leaving a deep impression in them, which they show in their works. If you think you don't have to know Gundam, you may never say you have the slightest idea of Manga or Anime!

    Love Hina (manga):
-After Keitarou finds out that he got a B grade in an exam in which he randomly filled in the answers and considered failed, he comments that he might be "one of those Newtypes", Newtype is a word from Gundam, referring to the next phase of evolution of mankind, a person with telepathic powers and enhanced reflexes.
-Kanako Urashima has the mask of a Zaku II in her wig storage, a unit from Gundam.

    Tenchi Muyo:
-In a short, Washu invents a bug exterminating machine, which she names "RX-78", bearing a reference to the 1st Gundam, which has the serial number RX-78.

    Pokemon:
-The Pokemon Poachers which are responsible for separating Larvitar from its mother have a robot which shows distinctive features of Zeon Underwater Type mobile Suits from Gundam. Also, one of the poachers resembles "Red Nose" Agahana of the Mad Angler squad, who pilotes one of the said underwater units.

    Char Aznable references:
Char Aznable aka "The Red Comet" is one of the most distinctive characters in Anime History, he is frequently at top place in polls of the most favorite Anime Manga character in Japanese magazines and is the probably most favored Male anime character. His distinct features are his blond hair, his mask and that he likes the color red, often painting his mobile suits in that color and is widely accepted as the archetype of a "Rival Character".

    Final Fantasy:
-Seifer Almassy's appearance and role are highly similiar to that of Char Aznable.

    Street Fighter:
-Ken Masters: Blond, wears red, is a rival/alternate protagonist character.

    Megaman Zero:
-Zero: Blond, red, is a rival/alternate protagonist character.

    Nintendo:
-Nintendo often brings out Red colored versions of its consoles, naming them "Char's Custom", referring to the "Char's Custom" units of Gundam, which are always painted red.

    Black Tri-Stars References:
The Black Tri-Stars, Gaia, Ortega and Mash by name had a far lesser role than Char, but became widely popular showing that screentime is not everything. Even though they mainly only appear in one episode, they are referred to by many games and works. They are known for their concentrated team move, the "Jet Stream Attack".

    The Jet Stream Attack:

    Final Fantasy:
-In FF XI, there is a notorious monster (mini-boss) called "Black Triple Stars", which happen to perform a skill called "Jet Stream".

    Yakitate!! Japan:
-The 3 bakers of the St. Pierre Kyushu branch resemble the Black Tri-Stars and even wear Zeon Jumpsuits. While eating the "Black Japan" of Azuma Kazuma, they hallucinate being in Doms, the units that the Black Tri-Stars were using in Gundam.

    Fullmetal Panic!:
-During an Arm Slave match, the opponent team has supposedly won every year due to the "Red Stream Attack" (pronounced very similiar to in japanese).

    Digimon:
-In an episode, 3 Garbagemon attack in a very similiar pattern to the Jet Stream Attack.

    GTO:
-Once a trio of Ganguro Girls (tanned with Dark skin) appeared, coincidentally named Gaia, Ortega and Mash.

    Tomino Today:
Like Nagai, Tomino is still alive and kicking it with Overman King Gainer and Wings of Rean! His creations are as usual rather non-conformal similiar to how he created Gundam, which is rather easily to be seen on the protagonist mechas.

Also in Tenchi Muyo Universe there is a moment where Tenchi and Ryoko are chased by a mecha robot.

If you look carefully at it's design, you'll notive that it closely resembles the MSM-07E Z'Gok-E, more in just the torso design, but with its monoeye too.

Amazing!! You are very informative!! I know about Ozamu Tezuka but I did not know about Nagai and Tomino. Thanks a lot!!! I should have checked other pages rather than page one, I could have known these things sooner. Thanks a lot really!!

Ah... some of the most amazing manga-ka ^_^. Already knew about the three, and I'd have to say I still go with Tezuka. I just wish I could've been alive around his time ;__;. His works were absolute masterpieces, my favorites being Black Jack, Princess Knight, and Astro Boy X3! Nagai and Tomino also have a place in my heart, but Tezuka is just the king of classics!
