My initial immature thought after reading this title, was thinking of the "Ladder to Heaven" episode of South park, where the US declares war on heaven, because they think there are Weapons of Mass Desctruction up there.

I won't even read the article, I will just ignorantly assume we met with the Prime Minister of Clouds and Sunshine, and that a war is no longer on the horizon against the Rain Soldiers

I'll feel better when I see action outside of a mailbox stuffed with 6 varieties of "What you can do" fliers. Maybe it's just Australia (Howard Australia, that is), but I don't see how knocking down forests to convey a message most people have seen on telly is helping.

Though, cutting down trees don't really have that much of an effect on global temperature on it's own, since adult trees don't grow and thus don't absorb CO2, and newly planted trees will absorb the CO2 from the tree that was cut down (that is released when it is burnt or otherwise broken down by bacteria or some such.)

That is, of course not the case with poorly executed deforestation, where there is no reforestation, and the ground is left to erode away and pave way for desert. That is bad.

I hadn't read the article. It was a rhetorical question because I know what would happen. Now that I have read the article, I can safely say doing so was pointless.
Why is it that environmentalists are completely dependent on the government? If a charity wants more support, they ask for private donations and spend that money on their cause regardless of whether the government helps out or not. If an environmentalist wants more support, they harass the government and some business. Rather than gathering donations to buy the land with some "epic" trees on it, they chain themselves to the trees. Why can't a private anti-greenhouse gases organization come together (funded by noble heroes like you and all those "scientists" that signed the IPCC report, of course) and buy these carbon credits from the companies? If this problem is so self-evident and significant, wouldn't people be willing to donate their own money towards stoping it?
The US is in trillions of dollars in debt and the governments of the world are so eager to have us spend money that we don't have.
