Okay, so I'm in Algebra 1 and i don't quite understand a concept of how to do this, if anyone is willing to tell me how to do this; it would be appreciated.

Instructions from the book:Write an equation of the line that is parallel to the given line and passes through the given point.

one of the problems:
y= -2x +3, (4,4)



I know the answer is y=-2x+12, but I don't understand how it's that. Can someone tell me how o.O

y=-2x+12 is AN answer. The full answer is
y=-2x + (any given number).

What you are supposed to recognize is that the number next to x determines the slope of the line, and that all lines with the same slope are parallel.

As Eris said, y= -2x+12 is only one answer for that problem. The reason this is so is becuase you just had to come up with a line with a slope equal to that of the original line (The one in the problem). The y= -2x+12 part is there to tell you what number on the y-axis that the line must go through. So it can really be any number for that, as long as the slope (The y= -2x part) is the same
I know a bunch of people already PMed you about it but I thought I might as well put an explanation here in the thread. Ive gone through Algebra 1 last year (Yeah in middle school o.o; But when I transferred to this new district, they wouldnt let me pick back up on my advanced classes because they assumed all the other schools are stupid >.> ) Anyways, these are really easy once you get the hang of it, so keep trying them ^_^

Here's what I said in my first PM:

You know slope right? Well, a parallel line has the same slope as the line it's parallel to. That's why the slope of the answer is -2.

After that, in order to find the y-intercept, which I assume you know what that is as well (it's the number 12 in the answer), you input the x-coordinate (4) in for the variable 'x', and the y-coordinate (also 4) in for the variable 'y'. Solve, and that's where it comes from.

Sorry if my answer to your question is confusing; if you have any questions, just ask.

Edit: I followed up with another example:

I think so... (lol) and that's the form we used too...here...I'll give you a different example.

We want to find the equation of a line parallel to 8=2x+4 that passes through the point (5,2)

For the new equation, we'd carry over the slope from the original one, and so far have:

y=2x+b

Then, since (5,2) is a point that must be on that line, we can put the coordinates into the equation, and then solve:

2=2(5)+b
2=10+b
-10 -10
-8=b

b is the y-intercept, so now we've found it. Now rewrite the equation with the variables.

y=2x-8

and you're done! Hope I helped more than hindered you. x3

If the textbook Meiras used is anything like the ones we used, the (4,4) is a point that the parallel line has to pass through, so technically, isn't there only one answer?

yes, theres only ONE answer - that was what confusing me some, but I recognize that any other given number for b will be correct, IF you didn't have coordinates and were told to give an equal equation of the same slope....
But with these problems, we are given an entire equation, with coordinates and are expected to all find one equal answer with these coordinates given.

Ah, I didn't see the bit about the point, then there is only one solution. It is found by dividing the problem into two subproblems:

(1) Find all parallel lines.
(2) Find the relevant parallel line.

y=-2x + C is the answer to (1)

To solve (2), insert the coordinates and get the following expression
4 = -2 * 4 + C

Solving C gives you C=12, inserting that into the solution for (1) gives you the solution y=-2x + 12

Elementary math (geometry and algebra) is about as interesting as a watching paint dry since it's mainly about learning stuff without really using it, but the higher level math you study, the more you get to use what you've learned, and the more interesting it gets.

If elementary math is like learning to use carpentry tools, advanced math is like building houses with those tools; a much more personally rewarding enterprise.

I think math is easy but i also think it is so, so, stupid. Most of what they teach us will never help us. I get tired of it.
