Default What do you think about this story?

This is the story i hold closest to me, sort of like my candle on the water. Ok... so. There was this old man who lived on the beach, and everyday he would go out, and there would be starfish stranded on the shore. And he would throw them all back into the ocean so that they wouldnt die. Then the next day, there would be more stranded and he would throw them back again. SO one day a man asked him, "why do you do that if they'll always come back the next day. It doesnt matter, you arent making any difference."
The old man smiled and told him, "It mattered to that one little starfish that's now back where it belongs."

That story is about the simplest story there is to inspire. I think we should all take heart in it. Even if we cant stop all the death and such in this world, if we can save just one person, then maybe it will be worth it. So i dont think we should give up. Its heartening to know you can make something of a difference.

But what do you think, oh critisizers and pessimists?
"Life isnt worth living if you dont do it all and do it well"
If i can help one person, just ONE person, then my life will have truly been worthwhile.
Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

Well if ya really wanna know from my point of view.........

It doesn't really matter. Were all gonna die someday, even those little starfish are gonna die someday. It doesn't matter.Your just denieing the inebidable. No matter whatcha do,someone dies everyday and life is going to continue like that until the world is filled with nothing but violence and death and the world will soon just fade away, leaving no trace of life.

At this point.Theres nothing really anyone can do right now.Even if global warming ceses being a problem, something different will happen and again there will be another problem for the world to solve.

Yes i know, its sounds dark and sad but thats how I think about things sometimes.
    Set by me.

    My honest opinion?
I don't think this is story worthy =/ I mean, sure death is a sad thing but it happens all too much. If it was your pet I could see but Starfish? Those things barely live to begin with, they poop out of the same hole they eat with. Its good hes saving them, but it does seem redundant after awhile.

Manhattan_Project I like your story is quite realistic...it reminds me of some one. Back to Atrumrox, I like the story. It sounds like a wise man when ask why the birds sing. I believe the death is inevitable and should be welcome, but life is precious, and if some one has the power to change around the life of one individual to the best, then they should. I always try to see the good in people, and I believe that by helping others you are making an impact no matter how insignificant it seems by others. I am a realistic, and I know most people will think I am wasting my time by helping some one, but as I have found myself stranded in the freeway or in bad neighborhoods, people always stop to help me. Always, they stop to help me with anything. It might not make a lot of different of people to help others, but it does mean something for the one who has being helped.

Death is inevitable. if your dead, well guess what your dead. In a world of 6 billion plus more, it is easy to not care.

I know harsh, but really, it's how things work today. If i saw a kid in need right next to me sure i would save him. But some kid in Guam? Yo no say man. i would probably not help.

I pick worms off the sidewalk after it rains and put them back in the grass so they don't get stepped on, I save little moths if they fall in the dishwater so they don't drown, and I bring extra grain to the little field mouse that lives underneath one of our water troughs. I'm possitive I would do the same for cute little starfish.

Thats just how I roll though.

The point of the story is "Don't be afraid to do a genuinely good thing even if it may seem hopeless." The reason is because small things can make huge differences, as explained by the butterfly effect.

Another thing one can get is "Don't think any less of someone contributing to what seems to be a pointless cause." Such is the opposite of what some are doing in the topic, which would make sense being that they disagree with the moral of the story.

I don't really think that's the moral of the story.

I think the moral of the story is that once you're old you do useless fruitless things.

Forget what everyone else says, if that story is your "candle on the water," then it is your "candle on the water."

Humans are destined to die thats for sure,
but if you save or help someone from something like donating charity/clothes and other for them to have a better life, i guess then its fine enough

Even if we cant stop all the death and such in this world, if we can save just one person, then maybe it will be worth it. So i dont think we should give up. Its heartening to know you can make something of a difference.

But what do you think, oh critisizers and pessimists?
I sort of know where you're coming from, I sort of agree.

Oh, Hi-deeki, imagine... your kind not eating raw fish! ^_^

My name is Golden State Warrior, and I approve of this message. I try to be like that old man. I'm not anywhere near his level, though.

"Coach, how do you eat cream puffs?"

"Cream puffs, you ask? Well... I start by splitting it in half... and eating the lid after dipping it in the cream from the bottom... and then I eat the bottom half. This way, I don't have to worry about any cream spliing out... while maintaining a balance between cream and puff."

I like the story. It's short and simple. Anyway, saving a starfishes life probably won't have much of an impact to the world, but it'll mean everything to that starfish. Ask yourself, if you were about to die, would you want someone to save you. I mean, just think of all the anime you would be unable to watch. True, once your dead, your dead, but still, would you want someone to save you? Hopefully, your answer is yes. Everything is gonna die sooner or later so ya, being saved from death to live for a bit longer is a really big deal.
    Sig no longer in development...

I do the same thing! Even with insects I'm not fond of. Well, not the field mouse part because we don't have many field mice in this particular area... But I agree completely.

I know everyone dies and that it probably doesn't make a difference, but none the less, I'd still try and help someone if I can.

All the throwing starfish story proves is that either the old man isn't afraid of starfish, or he hates starfish more then he fears them. I'm not going to say he isn't afraid of, say, dogs based on his starfish throwing habit.

It started with Master Chief. It was originally "I think Halo is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything."

It's pretty versatile overall, and still kind of funny if used at the right time with the right person/action.
