I think it's Naruto. You ask why?...Because many people like Naruto and there are some Naruto games they play. Naruto rocks. Even little children like Naruto. Many are amazed to this anime. That's what I think. I don't know if you're agree.

I don't agree, but don't worry. We don't have to agree. That's your opinion. If you like it, then obviously there's something about it that makes people like it.

WHAT ANIME DO YOU RANK #1 AND WHY
I can't answer with just one, because it's impossible for me to compare anime of different genres. I can't compare an action anime to a comedy, because one is definitely more action-packed, while one is definitely funnier. So I'll answer one per genre.

Action
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (& 2nd Gig)
I simply love this anime (and its sequel). Ghost in the Shell has awesome characters and a really well-written storyline. As they find out more about their enemy, the plot gets thicker and thicker. Then something cool happens out of nowhere. The music, acting, sounds and animation are all top-notch. Even the blending with the CG scenes is flawless. Certainly my favorite all-time when it comes to action.

Romantic Comedy
Seto no Hanayome [瀬戸の花嫁]
This is outright the funniest anime I've ever watched in terms of laughs per minute and intensity of laughter. There's a lot of comedies where you kinda just chuckle sometimes. But this is the only anime that has consistently caused me to laugh out loud several times per episode. They're so unforgiving with the comedy that even in serious situations they manage to slip a gag in, only making it funnier because it's unexpected. The characters are certainly loveable, as well. I like the artwork and voice acting as well.

燦ちゃん燃たよ!

Slice of Life
I have three for this genre, and I can't really say which is better.
Aria
Aria is just so nice and peaceful. Something about it makes me feel so nostalgic, and it also reminds me of the nice things in life. The songs are also very nice, and fitting for the style of the show. Characters are adorable, also with lovely artwork and voice acting.

Minami-ke [みなみけ]
(On-going series.) Hilarious for some reason, which is exactly what they were going for! Characters are unique and interesting, and waiting to see what their reactions to what would be normal everyday situations is what draws me to this show. Artwork is also top-notch.

Azumanga Daioh [あずまんが大王]
For anyone that's watched this series, the reasons are obvious. Every single character is interesting, right from the moment you first meet them down to the last episode. The situations aren't all too spectacular; just stuff that you might have happen to you if you were a regular high school in Japan. But, as with every slice-of-life anime, especially comedies, we watch to see how the people react to them, which is often what makes it interesting. One of those shows that I can watch over and over again and not get tired of it.

Notes:
There are several more to note, including Lucky Star and Hayate no Gotoku, but I wouldn't really compare them yet. Hayate no Gotoku was an instant hit to me, but compared to the comedies I mentioned above, Hayate just isn't as funny. Lucky Star, on the other hand, I didn't find all too interesting in the first episode just yet. It took me a few episode before I started to like two of the main characters, in fact. Although now it's one of my favorites, I've given points against it because of that.

I stress on voice acting because there are some anime with either painfully cliche voice acting, or voice acting that just doesn't fit. And I notice that, and it sometimes bothers me so much that I don't want to finish a show even if the story is good, just because I can't stand listening to it.

下げ下げ下げ下げ

In case any of you want to correct, question, comment on, or suggest anything to me regarding my translations or use of Japanese, please do. My sources of learning have all been listening to people and kinda forcing my brain to interpret, rather than actually translate like a dictionary.
I understand I'll make many mistakes (I'd be surprised if I translate something mistake-free) but you have to understand that I'm doing my best.

Like Unknownymous said, it is really hard to compare two deferent genres of anime and pick which one I like more. But, for me, my most favorite anime of all time would have to be one that isn't all that well known, Read or Die(both the serious and the OVA). I'm not really sher why though. I guess it could be how unique each character is. Or maybe because it has just the right mix of comedy, drama, and action. Like I said, I'm really not sure.

It seems absurd to think that a anime can be better than the other. There's some that are just too good.

I think the great thing about anime is that there really is something for everyone. I mean, I couldn't get past the first few minutes of Naruto, but I know it's hugely popular and one of my good friends is very into it (to a fanfic writing level). It's just all about individual choice.

However...in terms of my PERSONAL opinion...

Since you specified "one", I've agonised over my two pets and chosen one...probably because I'm still writing fanfic for it and in some ways I guess I've got more attached to the characters now because of that.

So.

My number one Anime is: ふしぎ遊戯 (Fushigi Yuugi)

My reasons:
#1: Watase Yuu's artwork is really awesome, and the anime is pretty true to her style for the most part. Some of the pictures...especially some of the Tasuki ones from the second set of manga are brilliant, and the characters are (to me) well done in the animation. Especially the second OVA series.

#2: The characterisation. All of the characters in Yuugi have several layers of stuff going on. There is no truly good or truly evil character. They've all made mistakes, had problems, faced their demons, etc. I like that the characters are all so diverse and that they stand out. True enough, Chiriko is neglected in the anime. However, even despite that...I still rate the characters.

#3: The humour. So darn funny. Nuriko and Tasuki are brilliant in particular.

#4: The basis of the plot...that Watase-sensei did so much research into the whole Chinese four gods thing before she put pen (pencil) to sketchpad and began to tell her tale. You can tell how much care and attention went into it. I have respect for a writer who cares about her characters that much.

#5: The opportunity to have opinions about the characters and work things out by implication as opposed to being told everything straight as if the viewer was an idiot. I hate series that go in for forcibly explaining everything in the scene...if the story can give the idea it's a much better flowing plot and I appreciate it a lot more.

#6. The soundtrack. Yuugi has some great songs. Perfect World is still my favourite...but Heart Ni Kiraboshi Sakashitare and Meccha Hajikete Gattsu Tobashite are also brilliant. And the tragic "Kaze no Uta" (sniff).

#7. The seiyuu! Yuugi should never be watched in English! LOL All of my favourite Seishi are somewhat involved in Yuugi, (although Okiayu Ryoutarou is only involved in the drama CD, so he's not in the anime). Seki Tomokazu is a brilliant Chichiri, Kanna Nobutoshi is a hilarious Tasuki...Koyasu Takehito is a wonderful Hotohori, Midorikawa Hikaru is great as Tamahome...and Miki Shinichirou's in there too as Miaka's poor brother Keisuke *lol*. The quality of the seiyuu is a big thing to me in watching anime...not as important as the plot and the characters, but close. So that's a big plus for me, too.

Erm...this has turned into a long thread...gomen...

In terms of popularity on a global scale...it's probably something mainstream like Inuyasha, Naruto, Bleach...something of that ilk. Whether that makes them the best depends on the individual perspective

I like Bleach and Inuyasha, but I have a few anime I'd rank over them...it's a very subjective decision

I personally like Naruto. I think Naruto Shippuden was a waste of paper and labor, but the first series was good. It wasn't boring at all, and it's well known. I've been watching it for a while.
On this day of days, most epic and prideful, you were born 15 whole American years ago!
Through the odds and by doing the impossible, you beat out hundreds of thousands of siblings in the great sperm race for the coveted egg.
Probably via hax.
Regardless! You won!
So remember, whenever someone picks on you or calls you weak or small.
Just remind them that you beat out a few hundred thousand other wimps.

And the grand prize was not dying!

Baccano! is the most glorious and underrated animu that ever graced this planet. With witty and dark humor, amazing fights and lovable characters, it destroys any other animu out there. Might I add that the OST and the OP are so amazing (especially, if you're doing accounting).

Good lord, I love so many. Eva, FLCL, Perfect Blue, Gantz, RahXephon, Akira, Tokkin Kinkreete, Please Teacher, Maburaho... There is even one I love terribly, but couldn't tell you the name because the disk I have lists the title in Japanese.

Robotech comes immediatly to mind because it was the first manga I was exposed to that had a story throughout the series and not a week-to-week thing like other cartoons. It had fairly rich characters in comparison to the ones in other cartoons growing up.

I think this was much the same with most people my age. It helped pave the way for things like Bubblegum Crisis, Appleseed, and Fist of the Northstar to do something in the US.

I don't know if the most seminal series in my life growing up here in the United States makes it the best, but it is important to me and a lot of others who grew up around the same time I did.

There is no #1 anime of all time as far as I am concerned. With time passing, there certainly will be upcoming anime that surpasses others, so the #1 position is pretty much non-existance with all these animes to choose from.
Even if the question is aim more on our personal responses, I would say that same idea applies. So I like Naruto today, but it will not always be my favorite anime two years later.

But for now, the anime that I really enjoy watching, despite little time to, is Katekyo Hitman Reborn. I find it much more entertaining than both Naruto and Bleach combine. So it is the #1 anime in my opinion right now. The arts are really nice, and it gets gorgeous into further chapters. I've always loved seeing fight scenes (which explained my previous obsession of Naruto and Bleach), and Hitman Reborn has delicious fight scene, especially the manga. The plot is interesting and refreshing. The characters are peace to the eyes. Overall, I enjoy it thoroughly.

I agree with your statement. Also, the number one anime is up for interpretation so there will never be a consensus on which is best.

That being said, the best that I've seen is Fullmetal Alchemist because of its, intricate story, complex characters and their personalities, character development, fluid animation, and great writing.

Spirited Away is probably as good as FMA. It's very close and difficult to tell which one is better but I still say FMA. There are others that are great but not as great.

I do also say NARUTO.

Why...
exactly what everybody knows.. I think its the most known anime from these last times. It has amazing characters, it has a light story, and melt funny, fights, love and mistery.

its not my fave anime in the whole world but it rocks

In my opinion, Full Moon Wo Sagashite is #1.And yeah, I know I talk about this series too much on here and it probably annoys people. But there's a damn good reason why it ranks "Masterpiece" on Anime News Network. There's a damn good reason that even though it's almost five years old, it's still my absolute favorite show despite the hundreds of anime I've seen from 2003 to now. If you want me to go into detail, you're going to regret it. Here goes:

The characters

Character depth is part of what really makes a series good. And this show has SO much of it. Particularly the three main characters but even the minor ones have their own story to tell. You can sympathsize with each and every one of them-their emotions feel incredibly real and they themselves feel like actual people-not just some cute drawings on a screen. Mitsuki's an angel, Meroko is lovable, and Takuto is a girl's dream come true. The bond that these three create is so.....it's so.....um the best words to use would be "warm and fuzzy". When they're together, you can't keep a big smile off your face. That might sound corny to you but they just have that effect on you!

The story

Full Moon has the best story I've ever witnessed in an anime series. It starts out all cute and happy yet there are dark elements floating around in the background but that doesn't get the heroine down because she's an optimist and gains a lot of support. She is able to have a postive influence on everyone she meets. But then the best and biggest plot twist comes and hits you like a truck and it's like BAM! DRAMA! EMO! DEPRESSION! Then everyone from the past has to come back and pick her up off her feet. It's so deliciously ironic and I LOVE it.

The anime direction

When anime is based of manga and decides to go completely off the original storyline, a train-wreck disaster is ALWAYS likely to follow, yes?

NO!

This series manages to pull off the best possible alternate direction from a manga I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE, creating a lot of appealing things that the manga sometimes lacked, so much that you might find a great deal of it SUPERIOR to the already amazing original version on paper. I myself like the anime versions of the characters more because there is so much more development with them. I want to shake Toshiyuki Kato, the anime director's hand and say to him, "YOU ARE A &$%#-ING GENIUS."

The romance

True love has never been better told in Full Moon. This is a very big reason for me as I love romance. But I don't like overly sappy soap opera romance where everything in the world gets between the couples and this happens much too often in other shoujo stories, so much that it gets to be downright irritating. There are no united couples after the first eight episodes. There are no cheesy dramatic break-up, get back together-break up-get back together-scenes either. Tanemura is SO good at avoiding elements that make shoujo lovers roll their eyes and say "MAKE UP YOUR MIND, YOU STUPID COUPLE!" What she does do, is give us little hints and tidbits of exciting chemistry between the boy and girl so you remain hopeful and cannot wait to see more, and then she rewards you BIG time at the end for being so patient. She is also very dramatic with love (i.e. "I will die for you because that's how much you mean to me") and MAKES IT BELIEVABLE instead of just slapping two hormonally confused teens together as soon as they meet each other. She allows the relationship to blossom slowly, naturally, and beautifully, the way it SHOULD. Aside from her gorgeous artwork and brilliant plots, this is the biggest reason for why she remains my top favorite manga author of all time.

The emotional impact

All I can say is "Holy sh&%". Grab tissues. You're going to BAWL. This anime can touch you in a way no other one could. When a fictional story can do that, you KNOW it's good. Hats off to the seiyuu for amazing performances. Full Moon's emotional situations really make it stand out from other stuff. I would say this is its strongest point and the general reason why people love it so much. You thought Fushigi Yuugi was sad? Pfft! You though Grave of the Fireflies was heart-wrenching? Nuh-uh. You ain't seen NOTHING YET. XD

The music.

The music is........wow. If you like music, you need to see this show. The music alone can make you shed tears. That's how lovely it is. Myco (Mitsuki)'s voice is so beautiful and unique. She's like no one else I've heard. And I've heard a LOT of Japanese music.

Going outside the box
This show has something for everyone-the story is so interesting and gripping that it's hard for even the biggest anti-shoujo, anti-cute anime fan to ignore. I've made all the people I know watch it-young and old, male and female alike and they loved it. The ones who haven't gotten to finish it, keep bothering me for more episodes. XD

.....wow, I am proud of this post.
