    How high is a defect rate when a company selling warranties is losing money from them? It's the whole "Home owner's insurance polices after Hurricane Katrina" thing on a far smaller scale, nowhere near as drastic; Yet, it begs the question.. Should a company be allowed to market items they know full well have costly and annoying defects?

    Like how the FDA marketed Viox and other drugs?

    one: its up to the customer to research the product before buying.. as they say: Buyer beware. no? On the other hand the companies should not put out defective products and, knowing that they are defective, refuse to refund or replace them..

    either way, mines still covered because if you already bought it then your covered. I think

    Companies have specific tests and measures that they must put a product through to market it as "non-defective". The mere fact that "not ALL of the product will DEFINITELY fail" keeps their bottom line intact and their lawyers well paid. Unless you can prove that every X-box will fail from one certain problem then MS can sell all they want and only have to provide a basic amount of warranty.

    Gamestop has no worry of this anyway. They are a distributor, not a manufacturer. The distributor rules are much more lax. They have no invested interest in the product should it be discontinued, as they have other product to sell. As a distributor, they offer warranty as a courtesy, usually backed by compensation from the manufacturer. However, unless they play some part in making the product non-functional, they are in no way liabel for its warranty. In other words, if the product is defective off the line, it's not the distributor's fault, therefor they have no reason to sell a warranty for a product that is getting overly high return rates.

    I believe that Microsoft already admitted that all of the regular models(white versions) of the Xbox 360s were defective. There's a problem with cooling in the design(or so they've said). There was supposedly another problem with the type of solder they used for the system as well. It was something about when the system gets too hot for too long the solder would become brittle and could then permanently damage the system if the solder were to crack at all.

    They also said that 3rd party cooling systems(or any 3rd party hardware) that take power from the Xbox 360 itself can actually help the 360 to overheat faster.

    And yeah... This is a pretty big problem. Microsoft already reserved over a billion USD to repair or replace some Xbox systems. And GameStop and Best Buy say that the failure rate for Xbox 360s ranges from 30-33%, so in theory, about 1 in every 3 Xbox 360s is bound to break in some way.
