I did used to go by the rule that I'd only watch it if it involved some kind of magic or something outside of the reality bubble. But actually I'm not so fussed by that now.

I don't really mind what the genre is so long as the plot makes sense and the characters are good and in depth. If they're not, you might as well forget it *lol*. I also like humour, even in something that's not deliberately comic a little humour is all right.

I enjoyed Inuyasha and am having fun with Bleach at the present time because of that humour reflex. Mind you I find things funny in them that probably aren't meant to be as funny as I think they are...so maybe that's a bad example.

But yeah. Characters and plot are way more important to me than the genre. If it's well put together, chances are I'll like it.

One caveat to that is though that I really don't like tragedy for the sake of tragedy. Fushigi Yuugi is about as far as I go down that line. I do not like seeing my favourite characters die, no matter what the situation or how it's handled. As I said, Yuugi is the one exception to that rule. In general, if a character I really like dies - or I discover they're going to die - I stop watching.

I should also add that a lot of my anime viewing has been seiyuu-influenced too. I have a select number of Japanese seiyuu whose performances/etc I really like, so I tend to look for anime with them in. Which means I get a fairly wide range of subjects anyhow.

I'll give anything a try. What it boils down to me is whether or not the writing appeals to me. A good story is a good story despite the genre.

That being said, Escaflowne is a favorite of mine as it combined two of my childhood loves: medieval setting and mecha.

Well,I do watch every kind...as long as it has good storyline...
But if I have to chose,then I would have to chose anime of psychological matter,the kind that is confusing,and requires maturity and thinking if you really want to understand it...
Some examples:
~ Death Note ==> not really that kind,but it's psychological indeeed...their IQ...wow...
~ Neon Genesis Evangelion
~ Gilgamesh
~ Night Head Genesis
~ Wolf's Rain ==> not really this type,but it's really mature,definitely not for kids
~ Full Metal Alchemist ==> for it has unmatched storyline,and does requires a bit of thinking and understanding...
And others similar to those...well,you get the picture...
