    Wii Code: Paranormalist

    Default sci-fi Science

Do you think that technology from starwars or Startrek or any other sci-fi movie could Could be invented ever?
I was watching the history chanel and they said that a lightsaber cuold be plasma controlled by a small magnetic field, thats explains why they are so hot and can deflect other lightsabers from the magnetic field but wouldnt that also make them stick together?

I'd love to see some opinions and some theories that have to do with the technology of sci-fi movies

Af's Paranormalist. Got a Question about the paranormal? PM i'll help.

Hey, you know you're right. lol I wish they would do cool stuff with science. Like, where the hell are all the hover crafts! I was under the impression that we would have them by the year 2000! I got ripped off damnit.

BTW, your lightsaber rationale, maybe the "good" light sabers stick to each other and deflect the "bad" ones. And vice versa. As in, each side has it's own charge. xD

This is a pretty interesting thread.

I don't think lightsabers can be made, in the movies I think the lightsabers were powered by some kinda crytal. And light always travels so I don't think they can cut off the light like that.

And where the hell is my T2? I want my Terminator DAMN IT!

The problem with hovercrafts is that they would take up so much energy and would be too wastefull.

The thing that some of you people need to understand the the economic perspective of things. A lot of things which would be 'cool' are possible but because they aren't economic, they aren't invented. Who would buy a hovercar that only costs 50 times as much for fuel and costs more to maintain than your utilities? Not even a rich person would do that.

If anything, I think the concept of 'bipedal' robots should be scrapped--it's a waste of time. Wheels have always been better than legs, and you can bet that if 50% of humantidy decides to replaces their legs with electic powered motor wheels, I would too.

What would I like to see be researched? How about a bomb with a huge area of effect radius that put people to sleep. That's how you win your retarded limited wars. (...which I hate. War should never be limited. It's putting a wolf in sheeps clothing.)

Actually, the likelihood that these things will be invented is directly proportional to the amount of energy consumed by the population of the entire society. It's called the Kardashev Scale, and basically what it says is that until we consume more energy as a population, we won't have higher level technologies. ie: Computer complexity increases gradually as we have higher needs for computation.

I disagree. Not everything that can be invented will be invented. Your example doesn't even support the statement you made. "Needs for computation" doesn't equal "consumption".
BTW, when I glanced at that link it taked about 'harnessing' energy, not consuming it.

Star wars technology? Never. It's a fairy tale, with little to no scientific basis. So will no sooner have star wars technology than we will have magical elves running about in the woods slaying dragons.

Star Trek technology? We already have some. Star Trek invented the cellphone, as for the rest, at least the more modern shows have made efforts to base it at least loosely on existing science, so it could maybe work some time.

    Specifically:
    • Teleportation - just maybe. It's been sorta done with individual atoms. Pretty far away though.
    • Faster-than-light transportation - really slim chances of that. Relativistic effects alone make near-light speed transportation terribly cumbersome. And unless there is some sort of back door (eg. wormholes), you require all the energy existing in the universe, and more to reach light speed, and then you need to figure out a way to break it. And then there's the problem of stopping when you've arrived.
    • Automagical Artificial Gravity - implausible, we'll have to stick with centripetal "gravity" (rotating ships) for a long while.

When ever people ask this question I say that much of what we have today would be considered science fiction in the past. Thus I do not think that today we can say what can and cannot be invented - all we can do is say what can and can't within a time frame - i.e. in the next 50 years.

Teleportion is just as flawed. Word is, is that your body would have to be heated up to such a high temperature to seperate your molecules that it would just burn and destroy them. If that was plausible, and for some weird reason that the atoms could be sent and then unscrambled and put together. Plus, this would kill the other and re-create a new, but how are we sure that the un-scrambling of atoms can put back memories or thought from the past duplicate? It is as you said for star wars fair tale.

I couldn't say, I don't think I know enough about technology to even make a guess, that stuff always surprises me.

At work, sometimes it feels like customers expect me to teleport them their pizza. One day I'm going to tell them I did, and that the topping they were missing got lost in hyperspace.
