Reputation is earned (and lost) by the posts you make.
It is given by other members and depending on several factors (length of time/post count/reps received/reps given) will depend on the amount you are given. Personally, I give out a ridiculous amount of rep and so tend to be a bit more judicious in spreading it. Hope that answer helps
