Default Kids in Tucson, AZ getting paid to stay in school

    http://kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=6906635

So Arizona has a bad drop out rate, but Tucson is making a program by rewarding kids $25 a week to stay in school!!! This is just crazy!

Sadly, all the kids I knew that dropped out when I was going to high school usually dropped out their senior year. Specifically before or after spring break of their senior year!! It's just beyond sad. And all these kids who dropped out for reasons God only knows I managed to still be acquainted with after all these years have gone NO WHERE in their lives and working at places like Taco Bell or Burger King.

I just wish we had this program when I was in school =(. I wasn't the best or the most motivated, but hey, haven't we all imagined at one point during our student years that we get paid to do this? Now kids in Tucson today can if you got a clean act.

First of all, going 'NO WHERE' is your opinion. They mght not be able to make as much money as an educated person, but they still are contributing to society even by working at some fast food joint >.>

Anyway, the idea of paying kids to go to school is a result of kids not valueing education. This is a result of their upbrining. I think that it is ridiculous to reward these kids with money to stay in school. Education should not be considered as 'labor' but as a 'service', which this money thing contradicts.

Infact, as much as I value education, I think the undereducation problem is nothing compared to the drug and pregnancy problems (which are a great contributer to highschool dropouts). Besides, many people who have graduated from highschool aren't extremely intelligent either.

Well. Neither is yours. o_O The fact that this happened, is their choice.

Neither is mine? My what? My upbrining? 'there upbrining' is the only phrase that actually had a possesive adjective in it, so I have no clue what you are talking about. You need to be a bit more specific cause I have no clue what you are talking about.

Regardless, people who indulge in sex and drugs do decide to do such things. That doesn't change the fact that they cause problems and could use some interveening since the government is so control happy.

In school many people don't learn much at all but still get good grades. The grade system based on hard work. That's why actual learning isn't so important.

Point taken. Aka Dave Thomas. Dropped out of school and so did Bill Gates. But they are just exemptions.

I mean, you expect people in their 40s to be athletic or prime shape as George Foreman as well?

Anyway, the illegal immigrants are taking the fast foot jobs more and more everyday. There is a McDonalds near by my old high school where you have to try and speak Spanish to order.

With the exemption of one guy I knew, all of the people I knew that dropped out just did it because they couldn't handle school anymore and thought they could make it without a high school education. And like I said, they dropped out just 6-9 weeks before graduation!!! I've never seen such pathetic quitters in my life. I'm just happy they're not smooching off our tax dollars yet. But I guess seeing how productive they are serving us at fast food restaurants working minimum wage gives some people like me a sick sense of humor.

The only understandable circumstance I ever saw was when a friend of mine who was being raised by his single mother was severely sick with cancer and had to support her working as a construction worker. Eventually, he got support from relatives and came back to school and his mother is now healthy again.

At my current job, I see that teachers and boards of education are lazy and not doing a good job in educating students. I score standardized and state tests for a living from all over the country. 15 year old kids have pathetic spelling to the point that they can't even spell words written for them!!!

I go by the "Mr. Miyagi philosophy."

"No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher." I know the teachers aren't forcing or telling the students to drop out or quit, but I think they should be more encouraging to a student's education. There is also bad parenting involved as well to be blamed. I just think it's sad that it has to come down to "bribing" students to keep them from dropping. But hey, I was always happy to get a new Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis game for every A I got back in the 5th grade.

I also worked in Japan and have seen a lot of crazy flaws in their system as well. Like kids not going to school for a year and can still graduate to the next grade. They don't get held back.

In my home area, if a kid doesn't come to school for 10 days (without parental notification), they have to go to court. I think a lot of cities are like that now too. Kids that have bad grades in Japan can still participate in sports.

hmmm, that's not so good. ...nope. That's kinda stupid. If they don't wanna go to school, then, ok, it's there life anyways. But ...that might be worth it though.
Schools in Asia are pretty good, and well organized. Almost all students do there best, and cares for there grades.

When it comes to brown families and there kids don't go to school, there parents discipline them. Meaning, kick there *** until they cry and drag them to school all the while instilling fear in there very fiber of there beings. lol, why do you think there are so many Indian doctors and Tamil scientists in those countries.

User_Name is right. School isn't a labor but an opportunity. Now i don't want to get philosophical here saying other people in third world countries don't even have this, but, parents are really retarted if they let there kids do whatever they want.

...I got my *** kicked too many times by my dad lol.

Well after reading the article and between reading some peoples posts here I am a bit worried about the grades of y'all than Arizonian's that have it "hard".

From my knowledge grades and tests aren't the direct representation of a human beings intellect. We have many strengths and several intelligences that recall and require onto certain things, but thats not for this discussion.

Really? I want factual support or some good articles between countries like Kazakhstan, India, Thailand, Siam cetera cause you can't expect anyone to just accept that.

The worst apart which I "Fail" you with utter hate is the assumption that "Almost all students do there best, and cares for there grades". Stop preaching and start showing us some evidence! Last time I checked much of Asia was third-world adhering to the principle that it not as economically developed so I doubt the greatest institutions for higher education exist as much as they do in the West.

Pretty much most of the article, if anyone cared to read it than listen to ParaParaMoJo's stupid rant and accept his opinion.

You see this? How is it crazy when the article points out the suffering of so many teenagers to serious family concerns and of course what would you put first?

You state how they could've gotten no where, your not friends with them cause your jock and this'en'tha but you fail to give us the mort important information and that is Why. Before you make another senseless post in this thread to begin with you should answer this question. Cause you don't know anything about their lives, issues, what if they a mother and father that had cancer or diabetes and they were in the hospital for a year or two?

Your going to say that they're sad? Get the hell out of here.

The only good thing you have said this entire thread, I imagine the situation these low-income are in are similar to this...

"Now kids in Tucson today can if you got a clean act. Something else you should reconsider, IMO...

You see, we are not aware of the social liabilities these people go under and neither do we know but fairly now how helpful this program is. Also to the would-be doers this program is apparently exclusive in its selection:

I guess local non-profit also adds to the fuel it wont consume every drop-out either, hopefully...

So to my mind it concludes if isn't State-wide then but centered on families that need it and not because the teenager is unwilling to learn or even participate in school but because his families upkeep is far more important and serious than his current state in school than it is an outstanding plan. With 25$ more dollars coming in every week this is beneficial to those low-income families and guess what?

It is not aimed at teenagers because they're unwilling to learn but because they need to drop-out to sustain their standard of living with their family and therefore they have
been given a truly God-given opportunity to learn and gain income to yield to their family. We should be appreciative of these sort of things cause situations happen like this all the time and it isn't just because of pregnancy or drugs either.

Cause you don't know anything about their lives, issues, what if they a mother and father that had cancer or diabetes and they were in the hospital for a year or two?
I don't know these people that dropped out and screwed up their lives!!!?? Do you know these people!!?? No, you don't so screw you and shut the hell up!! Why not answer your own goddamn questions next time!!

I've known 18 people that dropped out school. People I used to be friends with until they made stupid decisions like this. People I knew since I was 8 when I moved to Arizona.

Like I said, they dropped out weeks before graduation and most of them dropped out because they just couldn't handle it anymore and they were weak. And I said I didn't know why except God only knows because they did it weeks before graduation. I am not lying about that. Come to Gilbert High School, Highland High School, or Mesquite High School sometime in Gilbert, AZ and you'll hear these stories. And I don't see how making 5.50 an hour or less is going to help a cancer or diabetes stricken relative. But I suppose it's better than dealing in drugs and making hundreds of dollars a night. With the exemption of my bud who had to take care of his mother, most of them came from well off families. Not too good, but still not too bad. Out of the remaining 17 people I knew, they just dropped out because they were pussies. Beyond that, I don't know why and God only knows. And I still see them at a fast food joint. They just said they couldn't handle going to school and I just didn't understand what they meant by that.

Shows how much you know about these people that I've seen dropped out.

Overall, do I think this is a good program? Yeah, but I think it's not going to work. Because everybody is going to want to want the dough. Either everybody gets it or nobody does. That's all it comes down to.

Actually, that wasn't what I was thinking when I said that. What I was thinking is that they could try to live frugally and survive. It might not be what they had dreamed of but it is their life and shouldn't be looked down upon by others.

What's really bad is when someone is a menace to society. Simply being poor doesn't automatically make you such.

Ans with almost any occupation, it could be said "Someone's got to do it" so even fast food jobs contribute to society...

Yeah, I don't really care about Bill Gates success stories. Most people don't have half the luck.
