SONY Confirms PS3 Price Drop; $499

According to several news sources, and from the official site itself. They've confirmed a price drop in North America. Which's $100 down from it's launch ($599).

Along with this, they also confirmed that we would be getting a 80GB edition of PS3. Such features include
- IPtv
- Emotion Engine; taken out (you can only play legacy games via system updates)
- Motor Storm included
- Rumble feature on the revamped SIXAXIS controller

According to my sources, Konami was not impressed by this move. They are wondering just how much support this can really bring them.

But the most important thing I got was this:

Kitaue said Konami may need to expand the target hardware for its blockbuster fighting game Metal Gear Solid, which has so far been developed for Sony's PlayStation machines, to other consoles in the future to recoup development costs.

"Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps," Kitaue said.

I think this is huge. It shows that the game developers are not happy with how Sony's latest console has started, and may even make their next Metal Gear Solid game for other consoles.

This is a necesary move to get consoles off of shelves and into homes, but it's too early. Sony is continuing to dig their financial grave in this one.

The price drop still won't convince me to buy it, since the only game that I see on it that I would want is MGS 4. Most of the other games are already available on the 360, which I happen to have.

MGS4 going multiplatform is still very unlikely. Kojima is the only one with the final say on where it's going to go and with it's release set for this year they're running out of time to make it a multiplatform game.
Things like the octo cam that are only possible on the ps3 and the 50gb disk the games gonna require makes it all the more unlikely.
it would need to go onto many disks, work out a new way to make the octo cam work and many other things that would need to change.
the most likely outcome if it goes to the 360 aswell is atleast a 1 year delay to work things out.

keep in mind this was only one person in their company saying this just moments after the price drop without even waiting to see what would happen. jumping the gun a bit?

it's one of the biggest reasons that game stays exclusive, so why not bring it up?
in the words of Kojima "If a game can go multiplatform, it will"
so if MGS4 can, it will aswell. but taking all things into account, it's very unlikely and would probably have atleast a 1 year delay behind the ps3's one.
it's pretty simple to work out.
most reasons a game will stay on ps3 is if it uses the cell alot. you'll probably find every game that dosn't use the cell to a heavy extent is a multiplatform one.

but what's with the negativity in this thread? a console just got cheaper, it's gonna put pressure on the others to go cheaper. it's a win for all ^^

Actually, the "Octocam" is an extremely... mundane effect. Every time I've tried to see what makes it so "PS3 exclusive" all I've seen is something that has been done before on other systems without any extra effort at all.

According to what they said, the only reason they want it to stay exclusive is because that's how it started. Now that they realize that the only support PS3 has is from people on Sony's payroll, they are rethinking this strategy.

Think carefully. If one person says they are "exploring other possibilities" on the record, when they are not, there will be another story nearly immediately to quell such a rumor. This one person was speaking on behalf of Konami.


It's not negativity I feel. It's that I'm glad we're seeing evidence of what I've been saying all along. Wolfwood, you're out. You haven't done a very good job of reading and understanding the issues that people have with it, but I will do this for your sake.

The reason the PS3 was so unpopular in the first place is that it was $200 higher than the closest competitor's price, and twice the price of its own preceeding system. When you consider what people buy a game console for, and how much they are used to paying, the price was, and still is, too high for that. They can add all the extras they want onto it, but as long as they market it as a video game console, it will not sell as well as the competition.

As for the game library comment, now you're the one sounding like a little kid. Why buy a game console for $600 or even $500 if it doesn't have as many good games as the console that is $100-200 cheaper? I fail to see how you can find any logic in that. But what is coming out in the next year? I've heard people excited about two games. Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy. Konami has stated that they are exploring the possibility of going multiplatform with Metal Gear Solid, which takes the draw away from the PS3 for that one. It leaves us with one. Is one or two games worth $600? Hell, are two games worth $500? What about two games that aren't even out yet?

Now, also considering how most people have gotten tired of the Final Fantasy series, to the point where they not only aren't excited about the series, but many of them won't even bother to go buy the next game if they already have the console. So how many people do you think will buy the PS3 for the next Final Fantasy installment?

Will the 360 have games like Final Fantasy? Most likely. The RPGs coming out for the 360 have started coming on strong, since the PS3 has been so unpopular. Will the Wii? No, and most of us don't mind that. The Wii is a different toy altogether. It's like trying to compare a piano with a trumpet and a trombone. They all make music, sure. But they have different focuses on the way they do it. The Wii does what it does well, and the 360 does what it does well. Meanwhile, the PS3 may be capable of doing lots of things well, but of everyone I know who has one, all it ends up doing is folding.

So yes. I'm glad SONY thought of dropping the price. Wait... No, they kind of had to. They weren't selling enough, and based on trends and history, if they didn't do something, it would have just died.
But really, the reason I'm glad they dropped the price? Because I can almost guarantee you that we'll see at least a $50 price drop for the 360 in the near future as a result.

I also want to add on to Regex' last post by confirming the PS3 is still £425 ($850) in the United Kingdom.

If you're wondering how Sony are going to pull through with the price of the PS3 in the US, it's because they're making up the losses by pricing it ridiculously high over here. Until I see a £299 tag on the shelves of the boxes I can't buy one. It's as simple as that.

In response to the "Octo Cam" I have just one thing to say..... actually I have a bunch of things to say but for now I'll only use 1 word:

Fracture.

Altering the terrain of the map in the midst of frantic combat and working on both processors. The spokesman isn't the programer and most likely doesn't know what the f- he's talking about on the technical issues.

I've seen the trailer of MGS4, doesn't look like we have any gameplay footage yet though I'd believe that it was using the game engine. It seemed a touch over the top even by my opinions, but I guess that's just a part of MGS. Last one I played was 2 and it wasn't that good.

The PS3 is not out of the running and to say the FF series is making people bored, oh the contrary. FFX and FFXII were the BIGGEST sellers yet. FFX is going down as one of the greats (Like 6 and 7). FFXII is already there. FFXIII is AMAZING. The actual ingame play is like one MASSIVE cutscene that you fight through (Adam Sessler is gonna flip on X-play, I just know it. He can't even pronounce the things right and refers to chocobos as 'giant yellow chickens you ride around on')

Check around on youtube for the released stuff, its awesome and all the games designed on the PS3 ARE awesome. Personally if they fix the graphics on PS2 games on the PS3 it is a win win for me and I'd buy it. The game console is sweet.

BTW...sense I got to play the Wii....I want to kill myself right now for playing games that look EXACTLY like they belong on the N64 about 8 years ago. Zelda being a chief example....its looks almost EXACTLY like the Zelda:OoT. Maybe that looked even better...but seriously, if I wanted to play old games and stupid 'party' games, it would be a lot better on the 360 or PS3.

BTW... PS3 + Racing game + movie theater screen + Ultra Surround sound + super AC = GODLY GAMING. It was AMAZING to play the game, but stick a 100 ft screen in and you got epic baby. PS3 graphics hold true!

Here's another "ps3 rox becase the graphix!!". Graphics don't sell a system. Good games sell a system. Right now, it seems that Final Fantasy is the only big game series that's going to stay PS3 exclusive. Personally, I don't like Final Fantasy.

And to correct you on something right quick.
