tapping of the shoes...?

I was watching Chobits on Youtube and I noticed how Hideki tapped his shoes before going out. I've seen it in other anime...I always just thought it was to make sure their shoes weren't gonna fall off when walking or something like that...but now I'm starting to have doubts...

So what is that tapping of the shoes all about? Anybody know?
