I tried that, but it skips right over the J section...what good luck. (sarcasm)

Is Japanese written as something else?

I'm pretty sure you have to click the East Asian language thingies to get it done. But whenever I do that, it tells me I need to install that from the disky that came with it. -_- And then when I insert it it can't find the files. *dies*

Man, I miss my other comp, I had the Japanese on that one.

I understand you are trying to be helpful, but please take the time to read a thread before replying to it. The question isn't about a machine translator of Japanese, it is about installing Japanese font support under Windows.

just a little bit off topic....babelfish and other online automated translators are crap anyway with the Japanese language. The grammar, syntax etc are just so different that it comes all rubbish. for example if you translate "can i have a cup of coffee?" from english to japanese and then back to english again, it comes out as "I may possess the coffee?"

That's because the Japanese word you would you for have would be "aru" in dictionary form, and it's conjugate would be "arimasu". But the literal English meaning of aru is "to exist" or "to possess". The other reason for the weird translation is the Japanese language is significantly more polite than English, so they would ask "may I" instead of "can I".

I like anime, I'm otaku. I'm not a freak, if you want to feel like a crazy person you go to an anime convention and you be a freak like everyone else. That's what I do in my spare time to glorify the fact, I am not completely insane.

In the bottom-right corner if your screen, you should see a box that says "EN". Click that box and change it to say "JP". Then right-click the box and say "Adjust Language Band Position". Then you should see another box that says "A". Click that box and you'll have a whole list of stuff to choose from.

I think with my laptop I had to download East Asian support for Windows XP before it would actually let me type in Japanese. The activating in the Control Panel only let me read it, not type it.

And it doesn't work on all versions of Windows XP. On my other PC, it told me I had a legitimate version of XP but an unusual installation which wouldn't support Japanese language.

If there is a download you should be able to find it on the Microsoft site. It's been a while since I activated my PC's Japanese but I have a feeling that's how you have to do it.

On the other off topic note, WWWJDIC and nifty.amikai.com are much better as translators however all online translators do have serious issues with accuracy because of the different composition of languages in general.

Go to your control panel and go to date, time and regional options, click on language settings and put japanese.

Someone said it before, and when i first saw this thread, it was the site i thought of. Follow the simple instructions and you can type Hiragana and Katakana. Here's a hint: On the drop down menu, anything with a (h) next to it is Hiragana, anything with a (k) next to it is Katakana.
Remember, the real test for any choice is having to make the same choice again, knowing full well what it might cost.
