    Default Your Parents

It's time for me to make a serious thread.

My mom is...a bit hard to handle. She's bipolar and collapses under stress. This is especially tough on me because the things I need her for she is unable to do (for a period of time). I can lean on my family, but none of them live nearby, and I feel a bit imposing when I bother my friends about it every week. To tell you the truth, sometimes I just can't stand my mom and want to get as far away as possible and go live with my sister.

But to the point of this thread... My mom just happened to mention something today about the apple not falling far from the tree, and, to tell you the truth, I got really freaked out.

I was just wondering if you guys agree with the statement "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." It seems like no one ever wants to become their parents, but they end up like them anyways. Tell me about your personal experience and, if you would, reassure me that I won't grow up to be like my mom.

Please do not flame me. I don't dislike (not quite hate) my mom because she's bipolar, I dislike her because a number of other things that I may or may not mention on this thread.

    Please follow the rules

I think it's sort of inevitable. As much as I refuse to think like my mother and father, I have inherited some of their traits.

My father for instance. Although he is the type that loves and accepts all people and really enjoys the simple things of life, he, like most men in his family line, have a gigantic temper. Flash point almost. And almost all of them are extremely aggressive. Although his only comes out in rare moments, it would seem I've encapsulated that from him.

My mother, while not physically aggressive or tempermental, is extremely intelligent. She is a military nurse with Baccaleurette in Nursing with Honours and made the Deans list. On her side of the family there are two nurses (her sisters) whom have kids where one holds a masters in mathematics/engineering or something and the other a masters in genetics who just accepted a job in Hawaii (they get out at 3 every day so they can go to the beach ... good god). Needless to say they are a very intelligent group of people. There is no doubt in my mind that I owe my great intelligence to her.

So, as much as I refuse to think like my parents, realistically looking at it things, I've inherited my mothers logic like intelligence and my fathers near bottomless well of anger and aggression. The two don't really mix, no wonder I don't know if I'm coming or going.

Oddly I am the opposite. The only thing I have in common is certain movies and music and nothing personality wise is like my parents. I am lazy but neither of my parents are lazy besides my dad can be sometimes. I tend to have conflicts with both my parents and find that I am like the black sheep of the family. I am still accepted.

Sometimes you can be like your parents and sometimes you are not. It depends on the person you become. Sometimes you may inherit medical conditions and consider bipolar is a medical condition you may inherit it. But you just have learn to understand it and deal with whatever comes your way. If not then you are stuck in a situation you may not want to be in that is worse then what it could have been with a little understanding.

I hope things work out for you.

These are the people that you spend most of your life with, they kid of shape you and mold you. So it is likely that some of their traits will rub off onto you. But it depends on you as a person as well.

There's no definate answer on yes you will become like your mother or no you won't.

^ I agree with Mini_Twilight. My mother is bipolar as well, so I can understand your predicament.

The statement "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree", IMO it's true only if you let it. Yes, you may inherit the bipolar disorder... but personality wise, you wont be exactly like your parents. Maybe a few things will rub off onto you, but just that.

I "turned out" like my father: we both like to read and don't pay to much atention to annoying things/people. But at the end of the day, our ways of thinking (and behaving, wont fo into that) go in different directions: He's an idealist and likes politics... I'm a realist and the kind of people who thinks that there's not much to do for society.

It may sound foolish and what not, but the only things I can tell you are:
    -Be patient
-Don't change your way of thinking/behaving for others

I have to agree with Sagat.

I am bi-polar, and I have a few manic episodes now and then that have become serious. My grandmother raised me, she had dementia. Her mother before; diagnosed schizophrenia (which they have concluded that back then, most bi polar disorders were mislabeled schizos) so it seems to be an inherent gene amongst the women in my family.

How I haven't done enough research on whether or not disorders like bipolar are hereditary, I do believe that having a disorder like that can heavily influence the way a person interacts with people in general, not excluding parenting skills. I take medication to suppress my manic episodes, does your mother take medication for hers?

There are somethings that you will inharit from your parents. For example, I inharited my parents bad eye sight. However, there are somethings that I didn't inherit from them. For example, I like to past back and forth, and everybody in my family is annoyed by this. Anyway, you don't now what your gonna inherit from your parents. So, its like flipping a coin. Heads, you inherit this, tales, you inherit that. However, there is one thing that you should now. No mater what kind of personality traits you inherit from your parents, you could always change that. All you need is some self awareness and determination.

I disagree with this statement, but only to an extent. let me explain.

most cases of bipolar disorder (I will use this as my example) are actually false cases used to medicate people who usually have adhd, or similar.

the cases that ARE accurate, like mine for example, can only be negated by good diet, exercise to help keep the brain functioning properly, AND medication, to help balance out the chemicals in the brain that are producing too much or not enough of what it needs to keep hormonal mood swings in check.

Some things, can only be hidden, but they never really change.

there are a lot of people misdiagnosed, who with a bit of anger management and a better diet would be in a better state of mind, and that is where you and I agree.

As I remembered from listening to too much Loveline, and corroborated by Wikipedia, Bipolar disorder is often heritable.

Yes, my mom takes several medications, but none of them seem to work. We've even tried electric shock therapy, but it didn't work and now she doesn't remember half of her life. I can't hate her because some of her behavioral problems is due to something she can't control, but sometimes I get the feeling that she takes advantage of this. She'll act like a baby to get what she wants or tell me she can't work because she's bipolar (she won't even try simple things). She's also unbelievably negative, and, since I'm a bit of a pessimist, it's really hard to get motivated when I really need it.

The thing that scared me the most is that a few years ago, my mom took me to a therapist to see if I was bipolar. The therapist said I was because I would get depressed off and on. However, I was going through A LOT. Enough to make anyone with a brain depressed.

Arg! I'm not trying to make this a pity thread. I agree with those who say that if I don't follow in my mom's footsteps and keep my own personality, I can be a different person.
