Smoking has been linked to lung cancer by medical research institutions throughout the world...Cigarette smoking increases the risk for many types of cancer, including cancers of the lip,oral cavity, and pharynx; esophagus; pancreas,larynx,lung,breast etc. Certain other lung disorders, like epmhysema, are also linked to cigarette smoking. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of misscariage, underweight, and deformed infants.Smoking also increases the chance of heart attacks and a variety of cancers.

For now,it's well known that there are over 19 carcinogens in ciggaretes,as well 599 additives...
Burning changes the properties of chemicals. More than 4000 chemical compounds are created by burning a ciggarete...
By smoking,people are not only harming themselves,they're harming everyone around them...

Two really bad carcinogens are contained in ciggaretes:
Benzopyrene is a highly carcinogenic and mutagenic compound which is formed during the incomplete combustion of organic matter...
and
Nitrosamine - a "deadly cancer-causing" compound found in cigarette smoke(it can create variety of cancers).

So,there's some info about smoking,and now anyone cares to answer me on this question-why do people smoke?
By knowing these facts,I can never imagine myself smoking...

My grandparents smoke because back then in the 50's or whatever, smoking was normal...like playing golf or something. They didnt know it was bad.
Why do people smoke now? Peer pressure and stress. Everyone about my age who smokes either started in high school due to peer pressure (and cause it made you 'cool') or did it because it helps relieve stress.
Do I smoke? Absolutly not. My grandmother got lung cancer from smoking, which later spread to her spine. Her height dropped 5 inches. It scared me good.

No prob, it was about 7 years ago. In retrospect, my grandfather (reguardless of his wifes death) is still a chain smoker, and recently had his 80th birthday. He's in horrible condition, but hes still alive and kicking

The way I figure, you gotta treat smoking like alcohol, or greasy food: It's bad for you if you do it all the time, but every now and again, it's not that bad. Sure, I have a smoke every now and then, but I don't do it every day. In fact, I don't do it every week. More like once every month. And that's okay. I probably get more nicotine from second hand smoke than first hand smoke.

Hmm there is so much stuff in smokes guys. The occasional cig is ok but you shouldn't smoke much. I mean there is bloody cadmium in smokes. I don't want any of that in my system.

My grandfather smoked over forty years ago and just recently had to have a valve in his heart replaced (with that of a pig's) because of it, as well as having cancer. My father has smoked for over forty years and has continuous health problems including having to have a triple bypass a year ago and cancer. My mother has been smoking about twenty-five(ish) years and was just recently told she has cancer.

So I'd say it more than "can lead to cancer", it does give you cancer.

As for why, a lot of people start smoking under the impression they'll look more appealing if they do. Peer pressure plays a huge part in it as well. My mother started smoking when she married my dad because she thought that HE thought it was unappealing for women to smoke and would stop if she would start. It was a very very dumb idea, as she now realizes years later when it's already too late.

I started smoking when I was seven and quit just a few months ago. I did it because my parents did it, as well as 85% of my family; also, I did it because it relieved stress for me. It wasn't friends that talked me into it; in fact, I actually influenced four of my friends to start. I didn't crowd them into it, I didn't badger them and say "you'll look cool if you do", I simply offered them one if I was around them and smoking. They accepted. Now two years later from that time, three of them still smoke, addictively and chain. One of them doesn't because she had a baby. But the other three are now screwed for life all because I simply asked out of courtesy. None of them did it because people pressured them to, or because they “wanted to look cool”, they just tried it once. Once is all it takes to make a life saving, or life destroying, decision.

I'm well aware of the health risks, and can honestly say that I am not fond of cigarette smoking. The smell bothers me, and it stains your teeth, and skin. It slows down your exercises, and takes the taste out of some foods (if you been smoking long enough.)

Not something I would suggest to anyone. It's a drug that's legal. You might as well be drinking a cup of poison.

I have a friend who goes to the same school as me, and she smokes alot and everywhere, anytime. Like, at break times, lunch times, in girls' bathroom and.. well, everywhere. She started to smoke at the age of eleven to coz she thinks that smoking makes you look, 'cool' and 'bad', which was obviously dumb and she doesn't even know what smoking would do to her and to other people. I think that was because her mother smokes which made her start smoking, she even got a little sister and even smoke infront of her, which make me a little worry because the girl would get asthma or something.
Until one day, her doctor told her that she's got mouth cancer so, she'll have to see him again on sometime in May. I thought that she wouldn't smoke till that time.
Her aunt died at the age of 35 because she continued to smoke since she was 15. She had lung cancer and I can't remember the other ones.
Smoking doesn't only give you lung, heart cancer, it could make you have difficulties with vision, breathing and others. It's also hard to stop smoking due to the addictive drug [Nicotine, I think] and the chemical for the making is gross, they used ammonia, which is the chemical you use to clean the bathroom also they used carbon monoxide which is a deadly gas. They also used chemical that doctors uses to preserve the dead human body.
I think that people should stop smoking before it's too late, just like what's going on with my friend. She never listened to what her doctor tells her, and I know she's trying hard to stop, but it's not that easy.
And I swear to myself, that I'd never start smoking after I found out that smoking doesn't only make you 'cool', all I know is that smoking can take your life away.

I have smoked before and well it was a very bad choice. I am trying to quit and get my life back to normal. The best thing to avoid cancer is to not smoke. That is all I have to say for smoking

Why do people anything thats bad for them?

I see so so so many people that I have never seen smoke before just all of a sudden have a ciggarett in their mouth one day. Some girls do it to lose weight, people in the theatre department do it for "the artistic image" some people do it because they want to fit in and look mature. I don't really care what their reasons are, if they want to smoke then whatever it's their money and their body.

My mom has smoked her whole life, that was pretty much what turned me off to it.

Even though I don't smoke, I find it extremely annoying when I hear people say "you know you shouldnt smoke, its bad for you" like the smoker doesnt realize this. Non-smokers that have a high and mighty attitude just bother me.

I wasn't able to get out much when I was younger. So that made it worse. I crawled out of bathroom windows to get out of the house. Glad I can get away now though.

It has addictive qualities. People tend to see short-term affects before they see long-term affects... (ex. Cancer). I have friends that smoke around me all the time and - I've had adults smoking around me me entire life, but I will never smoke. To me, the cons outweigh the pros by far.

But how can you blame them? Being highly addictive, the best you can do is just ask for them not to smoke around you, so YOU don't get cancer too.
