    I might went of off topic but since you started about werewolves...
    Anyway,myth's are just rumors,legends...But every legend contains a bit of truth...
    ============
    Werewolf-word:
    ============
    The first part, wer, translates as "man" (in the sense of male human, not the race of humanity).It has cognates in several Germanic languages including Gothic wair,Old High German wer and Old Norse var,as well as in other Indo-European languages,such as Latin vir,Irish fear,Lithuanian vyras,which have the same meaning.The second half,wulf,is the ancestor of modern English "wolf"; in some cases it also had the general meaning "beast". An alternative etymology derives the first part from Old English weri (to wear); the full form in this case would be glossed as wearer of wolf skin. Related to this interpretation is Old Norse ulfhednar, which denoted lupine equivalents of the berserker said to wear a bearskin in battle. They are also very common in Omeath and Sligo.

    Yet other sources derive the word from warg-wolf,where warg (or later werg and wero) is cognate with Old Norse vargr, meaning "rogue," "outlaw" or, euphemistically, "wolf".A Vargulf was the kind of wolf that slaughtered many members of a flock or herd, but ate little of the kill. This was a serious problem for herders, who had to somehow destroy the rogue wolf before it destroyed the entire flock or herd. Herders would often hang the wolf's hide in the bedroom of a young infant, believing it to give the baby supernatural powers.
    =======================
    Werewolf-how to become one:
    =======================
    Historical legends describe a wide variety of methods for becoming a werewolf, one of the simplest being the removal of clothing and putting on a belt made of wolfskin, probably as a substitute for the assumption of an entire animal skin.In other cases the body is rubbed with a magic salve.To drink water out of the footprint of the animal in question or to drink from certain enchanted streams were also considered effectual modes of accomplishing metamorphosis.Olaus Magnus says that the Livonian werewolves were initiated by draining a cup of specially prepared beer^^ and repeating a set formula.Ralston in his Songs of the Russian People gives the form of incantation still familiar in Russia. According to Russian lore, a child born on December 24th shall be a werewolf.
    Oh yeah,and if two werewolf's gave birth to child,that child will be werewolf...

    Becoming a werewolf simply by being bitten by another werewolf as a form of contagion is common in modern fiction, but rare in legend, in which werewolf attacks seldom left the victim alive long enough to transform.

    In Galician, Portuguese and Brazilian folklore, it is the seventh of the sons (but sometimes the seventh child, a boy, after a line of six daughters) who becomes a werewolf.In Portugal, the seventh daughter is supposed to become a witch and the seventh son a werewolf; the seventh son often gets the christian name "Bento" (Portuguese form of "Benedict", meaning "blessed") as this is believed to prevent him from becoming a werewolf later in life. In Brazil, the seventh daughter become a headless (replaced with fire) horse called "Mula-sem-cabeça".
    As we see,it's a curse to be born as 7th child^^

    Note:txt taken from my book named Mythologies...
    I just love mythologies^^

    Rabies.. LOL

    I alwys wondered about the werewolves that kill herders cow and drags them around. This is great information.
    Do you have something connecting to king lycon and stumpy... stumpy is the first to become a werewolf after the king lycon's death.
    Pore stumpy was put on a 8 wheel and a statuehette of a wolf on it. His legs was well, became stumps after the citizens got their hands on him.

    EDIT: Stupid of me stay on subject! Ok any new erm... poeple.

    Wow! I'm already loving this forum! To start it off, I believe that myths ARE based on facts. How can they not be? You have hundreds of myths and legends from around the world and yet they are/were not real? It's stupid in my opinion. That being said...

    Vampires: Vampires (or vampyres) are mythological or folkloric creatures believed to be the reanimated corpses of human beings who subsist on human and/or animal blood. In folklore, the term usually refers to the blood-drinking humans of Eastern European legends, but the term is often applied to similar legendary creatures from other regions and cultures. The characteristics of vampires vary widely among these different traditions. Some cultures also have stories of non-human vampires, including real animals such as bats, dogs, spiders, and mythical creatures such as the chupacabra.

    Vampirism is the practice of drinking blood from a person or animal. In folklore and popular culture, the term refers to a belief that one can gain supernatural powers by drinking human blood. The historical practice of vampirism can generally be considered a more specific and less commonly occurring form of cannibalism. The consumption of another's blood (or flesh) has been used as a tactic of psychological warfare intended to terrorize the enemy, and can be used to reflect various spiritual beliefs.

    The English word 'vampire' was derived (perhaps via French vampyre) from the German Vampir, in turn thought to be derived in the early 18th century[1] from Serbian вампир/vampir,[2][3][4][5] or Hungarian vámpír.[6][7] The Serbian and Hungarian forms have parallels in virtually all Slavic languages: Bulgarian вампир (vampir), вапир (vapir) or въпир (vəpir), Czech and Slovak upír, Polish wąpierz and (perhaps East Slavic-influenced) upiór, Russian упырь (upyr' ), Belarussian упiр (upyr), Ukrainian упирь (upir' ), from Old Russian упирь (upir' ). (Note that many of these languages have also borrowed forms such as "vampir/wampir" secondarily from the West). The etymology is uncertain.[8] Among the proposed proto-Slavic forms are *ǫpyrь and *ǫpirь.[9] The Slavic word might, like its possible Russian cognate netopyr' ("bat"), come from the Proto-Indo-European root for "to fly".[9]

    okay...myths are a way for a culture to pass spiritual concepts down from one generation ot the next. They are not for entertainment as we use them now but to capture the necessary growths which an individual must have on his path to adulthood and to tell the individual what his place in the world is. For example, in hunter myths the human is typically in a relationship with the hunted animal, the hunted animal is seen as giving itself up to man as part of a give and take system, and in return man must perform certain rituals as his end of the bargain. This is to take away the guilt of hunting because hunting and for that matter planting is a devouring of life by life, a sort of cannibalism after a fashion. With this sort of relationship hunters can feel that they are not being cruel but are part of a natural cycle. This is what a myth is. Myths are common in all religions. In fact Christianity uses a lot of mythic overtones not dissimilar to those of others. For example the virgin birth was also a common theme in native american myths. And we can draw parrallels between the three temptations of christ in the desert and the three temptations of Buddha.

    What this goes a long way to say is that myths are vital to learn about if one wants to understand the spiritual nature of mankind and it is a facsinating field to study as one realizes how similar stories appear in very different parts of the world.

    Finally, I would like to say what you have named, werewolves, and what others have named (vampires aka vampiirs) are not myths. They some of those stories of evil beings are indeed merely for entertainment but they also reflect the highly supersticious nature of the middle ages in which they blossomed and developed as we know them to day, back when paganism and christianity fused to create a series of demons and dark beings. Its really only a nature fusion of the devils of bible and the creatures of pagan origin. However, as a creature, they are not mythic but are merely folk lore. It is only when combined with a story which helps to relate the audicence with the world around him can it be consider a true myth.

    So in short, what you are talking about are not myths, it is folk lore, and there is a major spiritual difference.

    The tragedy of life comes not from pain, despair, sorrow, or even death; but the constant annihilating amnesia that begs us to forget we live.

    Actaully it is both, mostly folk lore. It does differ doesn't it? Of course it does. Blossomed as we know them today, jip trough movies and stuff like that. Ah I understand better. Ok guys I'm in a tug of war between guessing what is what and where the folk lores started.

    There is always a folklore with a leader somewhere. Sorry about the mistake of the folklore and myth. Still your infromation is not read in vain. It sits now in my mind.

    Edit: I love the history. Word fight!!! lol. Middle ages did infact unravle the stuff of folklore making it worse than it was. But now in these time there aren't any clues to if the creatures exsited.
