Parents Just Don't Understand?!

Okay, so I was listening to a Death Cab For Cutie song, called "I'll Follow You Into the Dark", the other day. My mom isn't exactly "down" with all of the hip-hop music I used to listen to, but she at least liked (and understood) some of it. But now that I listen to Death Metal, Electro, Industrial, modern Rock, (some) Punk and Scott, Hardcore Metal, and New Wave - more than hip-hop, rap, and R&B - she looks at me like I'm crazy.

Anyway, she said, "How can you listen to this stuff?". I thought that she was still on her "rock and acoustic songs are for white people; hip-hop and rap is for black people" thing, but she was talking about this song in particular. She then said that the song is "depressing" and that it's about "failing in life". Ironically, I was now the one looking at her like she was crazy. If you listen to the lyrics of the song, it's more about love...I don't know what she was talking about.

Okay, so here is the point of this: Do your parents (Guardian, whoever) understand your tastes in music or the songs that you listen to? Do they like what you like, or do they think that you're crazy for your musical interests?

heh well my parents think im tone death and listen to garbage, my mum likes some stuff..some of the softer stuff, like evanescence and some stonesour..but my parents cant stand slipknot or cradle of filth, but i guess its just their job..their parents probablty hated their music taste..like abba?? elvis? i dont know.
Think it really depends how your parents are.

Well, my parents don't really mind what I listen to, as long as I know what is right from wrong. As long as I follow the right path, and not the wrong path. That is all that pretty much matter's, in our minds anywase. Were a family that will listen to almost anything. It just depends on the settings, and mood, at that present moment in time. This opens the door to music for us.

For the most part, I'd say my family thinks my music is WAY out there lol. Not that I mind, just means I get to listen to it privately, the way I like. Also, not to sound like a judgmental person but, why is rap okay, but metalcore and such not? Some parents confuse me, I'd rather have my kid listening to some guys screaming about stuff (usually deep meaningful lyrics, though sometimes quite angry) than have some of the rap be played. Just my personal opinion.

Yea, sort of. I listen to 'The Beatles' with my Uncle, and we both agree that sleepy music is the best to listen to at anytime--but I listen to all kinds of genres (so long as it sounds appealing), so it doesn't really apply to me at all times, I think. My parents, on the otherhand:

"SHUT OFF YOUR STEREO, IT'S TWELVE AT NIGHT! WE'RE TRYING TO GET SOME SLEEP, DAMNIT!" sorta people. I guess I blast my stereos too high when they're around. Not like I listen to angry music in the first place. ;]

My dad and I share the same sort of taste in music. He and I can listen to my music together and agree on liking it. He's into all sorts of music, so it's fun to listen to some of the stuff he listens to as well.

My mom is ok with it, but she's not as big on music as my dad and I are. She and my brother like the same types of music. Which is the opposite of what my dad and I like.

And my brother, he and I don't agree on music at all. There's only about 2 bands we both like, and that's it. He says my music has "no substance" and that it's just a bunch of grunge and static. <_< Whatever that means.

I keep my CD's and Mp3 player's away from my parents so they really don't know what I listen too. And when I ask them to buy a CD for me they really don't look at it, I mean they gave a CD with tons of cursing to my ten year old sister,without knowing what they were doing. But I guess that is because my parents are super busy but my dad does like my Fall Out Boy CD, he listens to it sometimes.

My dad doesn't really take interest, as long as it's not particularly foul he respects my musical interests, we like some bands though The Beatles, Black Sabbath, The Ramones, Queen, and things such as that. My mom does the same (and likes the same bands my father likes that I mentioned earlier) and lieks some of the stuff I listen to Belle and Sebastion, Keane, Cake, and Bad Religion, really.

*laughs* I don't know what's worse, having your parents hate your music or love it.

When growing up, my mom and I listened to the same music. I started out on oldies (which at the time was 50s & 60s) and graduated to pop in junior high/high school, then to country, and now I listen to music with lyrics that are more often than not in another language.
My mum listened to the oldies with me and then moved onto pop when I did, then to country, but our tastes have long since diverged. She listens more and more to Christian music (not my scene) and those singers that sing in both English and Spanish (my mum's heritage).
I listen to just about everything....you name a type of music and I'm sure I have a represenative of it in my vast cd collection.
My dad was a different matter. He only liked the music from the 50s & 60s though he did listen to country for a while when my mum and I did. Otherwise, my dad thinks it's all a bunch of noise. He hates the music that's not sung in English cos he can't understand it.
But in the end I don't think it matters what your parents think...or your friends for that matter. It's how you feel about the music. If you love it then it's all good.

My parents don't care about what I'm listening to.
They hate some, they like some, but they don't care if I listen to it or not.
Nowadays they barely even know what I listen to I think.

So never had a problem with that.

I actually had an argument with my mom yesterday when she called my music "pointless noise." she really * me off with that comment. I told her that no music was "pointless noise" because if you like it and it gives you a good feeling, it's far from pointless.

Yeah, in another language music is better. My mom sometimes liked what I listen to, but shes more into Christian rock (which I'm fine with at times) and old school (70s mostly). But I really don't care. We have our own tastes.

My parents just think I'm crazy in general for my music tastes. They say i listen to too much white people music but I don't really care. I listen to all so they can't say too much to me. Neither one of us like each others music tastes but we respect it for the most part.

My mom care less bout what I'm listening to and my dad...well, we practically listens to the same songs depending on what songs I listening. If he likes it then he'll just queitly whistle. He even introduced me to an oldies sond...Casiopea or something like tat and I liked it!

My dad can't stand my taste of music. However, there is a different story for my mom. The way my dad was raised, he does not like anything I listen to, nor does he like the way I dress. However, my mom supports it. And both came from the same country.

Oddly enough, my taste in music comes from my parents, so they approve of pretty much everything I listen to, although they aren't fond of listening to instrumental tracks repetitively in order to memorize them for whatever reason, which is a habit I have from playing various instruments.

lol. I listen to whatever, I don't mind what kind of music is on, I enjoy it all ^ ^. My mom, dad and me listen to the same music which is mostly in spanish, but jake doesn't really understand it hehehe, so him and I listen mostly to 80's music and old school R&B.

My Parents don't like the music I listen to. They see it as a "Bad Influence" on my behavior. I just ignore them though ^_^;
