What would you have done?

Well, here is my story, tonight I was with some friends at the appartement of one of them. There is a restaurant in front of is house, on the other side of the road. Near midnight, one of my friends said : What's going on out there?... So we all watched trought the windows and saw 4-5 persons beating someone behind a car. We saw them kicking him while he was on the ground, but couldn't see a lot because it was behind the car. So we called the cops and said to come over but by the time they arrived, the gang had time to get away. What as been bothering me is that : There was people in the restaurant watching the fight and we were the one to call the cops and the other thing is my friend girlfriend who said that we were "weak" because we didn't go outside to help the men... Yes maybe by going outside those guys would have just go away, but honestly... I didn't really wanted to take a chance to get into a fight with them... it's not that I can't defend myself... I know I can, but me and my friends were just three and geting into of fight with 4-5 totally unknow guys, didn't looked like a good idea. I was wondering what do you think you would have done in that situation? I must say that the thing that as being bothering me about this is that it looked like they put the guy they have beaten into the car before they got away...

I would have done the same thing as you. They could have had weapons and could have killed you if you had gone out there. Calling the cops is really the best thing to do in a situation like that.

As for the people in the restaurant, there is no excuse for that kind of behavior. I know someone had to have a cell phone in there. I can only blame the group dynamic for this. People in a crowd tend to let things happen.

i cant say id have done anything diffrent, unless mabey i had some kind of weapon like a knife.
calling the cops was probably the best you could have done.
You did say you had some friends with you but you didnt say how many, if you had more than 3 or 4 i think you should have gone out.
But theres no point in thinking of the past, whats done is done. The important thing is what did you learn for the future.

well first thing is first you can't go blazing into a scene because you don't know if the other gang has a weapon. so basically you'll end up getting killed. i agree that what you did was right but even when you called the police i would have tried to get the car liences so even if they got away the police would still have a trail on who they are persuing. but even still what you did was the right thing so no worries there wasn't much you could've done because the guy they beat was kidnapp and tooken away from what you said.

Well, I definitely wouldn't have come rushing in... But if my parents weren't there, I would've done the same thing as you. A lot of people never call the police because they're afraid gangs might find out who got them arrested, and they don't want anyone coming after them.

But...I have to admit, seeing myself in a situation like that...I might've let someone else save the guy. But I'm not sure. It really takes that situation to find out....

It depends because I have two sides. The responsible, playing it safe side, kind and caring normal/good side or the reckless, crazy/psychotic, blood thirsty, dark side. There will be probably two things I could've done.

First. I would do the safe thing like you did. or

Second. Be reckless by getting two kitchen knives and headed out there to assist. Believe it or not, I've trained in using knives/twin knives, canes/twin canes, staffs, and swords. With two knives, I know where to clean cut people's muscles/muscle fibers so they can't move their arms or legs.

The second isn't really a great idea. They could also arrest you for attempt of murder even though you're intentions are pure. the first one is highly recomended.

Actually, the restaurant is a Subway and there was three person in it watching the scene... the guys who work there and two customers.

It’s a said fact of society that we all seem to expect people to be heroes. You did the right and prudent thing. By calling the police you ensured that the victim was able to receive any medical attention that may have possibly have been required.

We are often exposed to tales of heroism in the news and popular media, and it seems that very often that behaviour is no longer truly celebrated as extraordinary but rather “expected” of people.

Those who looked on are unaware of the circumstances or the current state of those committing the assault. As was mentioned, there is a possibility they may have had concealed weapons and even worse, one of the friends lived right across the road. If you all came storming out of their place to drive them away, that person in particular could have been made a target for retaliation.

You should not be taken in by any such ideas of “expected heroism” the first human instinctive need of survival is there for a reason. Anybody who tells you that you should be a hero and drive them away is a hypocrite.

I would have done the same thing...or thrown a rocks at them...Get them to leave the guy alone OR!!! I would have ran out there with a camera, hid and took pictures...Not for enjoyment, but so the police would get a description!

I would have definately called the police, but personally I would have chosen to get involved if I was with my friends, but then again my friends and I aren't the smallest people around so if you honestly didn't think you could fair agianst a confrintation with them it's up to you.

Calling the cops was the best thing you could have done. Like SesshoumaruOtaku said, they could have had weapons on them and they could have killed you and your friends. It's better to be alive then to be dead don't cha think...

I don't want to sound full of myself or anything, but if my group of friends were with me, we definitely would have gone out.
Not that I'm saying what you did was wrong.
But I mean even if the group of us just walk across the street to go in the restraunt, there are chances the group may just walk away seeing people.

But I guess it has a lot to where you live. If your area has a lot of violence/shootings/gang-like activity. I mean if you live in Chicago, no [removed] what you did was right. Some communities though aren't that intense when it comes to violence.

Personally, from past experience and 2nd hand knowledge, if you have an encounter with an unknown (someone who may or may not possese a weapon) bring a weapon, mayber, but NEVER ever, come out wielding a weapon.
Because people have this really messed view of honor and if you engage in a fist fight, they usually won't up it to a knife or gun fight unless they've never been in a fist fight and are freaking out.
But if you pull a knife, and they do have a gun, they'll probably pull it.

Then again, I'm the type of guy who defends his house with a bowling pin.

It depends. My friends was in a situation like yours one time back in high school and he beat off the guys with a baseball bat. And he's a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and he's done Kung Fu for years. In un-armed combat, I have managed to fight 4-6 guys by myself. I'm an amatuer boxer and kickboxer and I've done other martial arts for the past few years. Last street fight I was ever in was back at the train station lobby in Japan and after I was done with him, I ran because I heard you can get deported for that stuff even if you didn't start it.

If I had a gun or something, I'd fire a warning shot. But yeah, I'd come out with a bat and be all Casey Jones on dem foos.

If they didn't have weapons I would have take out my sword(I have one)and chased after them or sneak up on them with a bike or bar of some sort and kill them(figure of speech) and then call the cops.Then help the man up .( Help the good man up).

I would of done the same thing and i say shame on those people in the resturant not calling anyone or helping in any way! They should of done somthing then just watch the scenery.
