US woman dies of water intoxication

AP - A 28-year-old woman has died of water intoxication after taking part in a Californian radio station's water drinking contest.
She was in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" competition trying to win a Nintendo Wii video game system.
Assistant Sacramento County Coroner Ed Smith said a preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death".

Sadly, many people aren't even awair that too much water consumption at once can poison/kill/cause health problems.

I'm guessing no one at that radio station knew that.

I heard about this from my mom. She didn't know that too much water could kill anyone. I believe that not using the toilet is what really killed the woman. Once your kidneys flush out most of your system and stores eveything in the bladder, it's best to always answer nature's call and empty it out on a daily basis. There's nothing wrong with drinking water, in fact people should get a gallon of water in everyday. Water helps to detoxify your body, toxins store in the kidneys and then get emptied into the bladder where they are emptied out from the body by urination. Not going to the restroom when you need to go can cause serious injury or death. I guess now people realize this.

To the contrary, this was more the radio station's fault for not explaining the risks beforehand. Nobody ever considers that drinking too much water could kill them, because we don't normally drink enough, so everyone says that water is always good for you.

Believe it or not, theres actually a lot of people who dont know that.
I think what killed her was the bacteria build up in her bladder...

I heard about this on my local news station. I thought it was wild at first but drinking water and depriveing yoursefl the bathroom could really hurt someone. At first I thought the womans appindix bursted, but it was really water intoxication.

No, there not but ever heard of Darwin. The better survive the dumb don't. I think this is proof of that. Willing to do something that stupid for a wii. She just could of paid 250 wait in the cold for 12 hours on the day it came out like me Yesh, people these days.

Actually, you can die from drinking too much water. It was not the fact that she didn't use the bathroom, but she the fact that she drank too much water at once (water intoxication). Not using the bathroom can be bad for you but that's something that takes a while versus water intoxication can get to you quite quickly. People can drink a gallon of water in a day, but that is spread over an entire day. She sat down in the radio in the radio station and drank almost 2 gallons in a few hours (that can really kill you!). What happens is that when she drank all that water, she threw her electrolytes out of balance. This can your brain to swell and put you in a coma. Even more water will cause death.
And the radio station was aware of this. As a matter of fact, a nurse called them during the show and said that the contestants were in danger of killing themselves, but the DJs ignored her. Before the woman died, she even complained of having a headache (from brain swelling), but again the DJs said she was okay. Its no wonder that they have been fired.

all the consoles have violence and stuff around them now. it's not to surprising, but would ya give me atleast 10% funny? ^^;;; maby that's just my stupid humour.
i mean, no console seems worth it. most of all the wii which can be found in a number of shops now (around my area atleast) and at a cheap price (for a console) so why go to such extreme's for one?

it's almost as bad as the guy who killed a lil kid over a 360 or the shootings in the ps3 line.

Dammit, I (a mere kid compared to this 28 year old lady) knew that drinking water could kill you! It is common knowledge! I mean, you don't go on a reality TV show that says, "we have 100% pure oxygen, breathe it in and you win money!" You don't do this because decently educated people know that that stuff kills you! There was also a frat boy that died by drinking too much water. You know what I have to say about these people? At least we're saved from your offspring.

Burning Crusade is hardly worth that. It's easy to find for me. I saw plenty of extra copies in Best Buy. Gamers who go to the extreme for that stuff, I don't understand. Why not be patient and wait a bit? It pays off.

Everyone can GET a copy, it was getting INTO the new area at midnight and getting to play the new content and level before everyone else could. Thats why people got it at midnight, had nothing to do with being afraid they wouldn't GET a copy.

Everyone has their vices, just because they're not the same as yours doesn't mean that your vices are better :P

People do stupid things for just about anything, sport tickets, games, concerts... Shouldn't throw stones when living in glass houses...
