Same here. I take Chang Moo Kwan style Tae Kwon Do. I'm a blue belt, though I don't attend classes while wrestling season is in, so I've probably been demoted a ranking or two by now.

Yes, I take martial arts.

Styles? Well, I did some muay thai and jiujitsu. Right now, I am taking a form of jiujitsu mixed with muay thai that is made for the military, so it's created to kill. IE, some of the moves include a takedown that ends in a fatal neck stomp of the downed victim, a collar bone break, choke outs, etc. It is mostly jiujitsu however, both ground and stand up grappling. There is no real name to it, it's simply called CQC - close quarters combat.

Aside from that, I am currently enrolled in Goju-Ryu karate, I take it thurs nights (can't do it tues nights because of military course commitments) that is taught by Sensei Kyle, also the DCO of Base.

I did a year of muay thai and JJ, and I have just started the military JJ. I started Goju Ryu karate back in Oct 06 and am thus still a white belt.

Why take the arts? To learn how to fight of course. The fitness too, especially with the CQC club. Good martial arts go hand in hand with conditioning.

I have done judo, which i did for about 2-3 years. But at the moment it's not on, as one of the new girls broke her leg and it was canceled, for the moment. She was at a competition, and was matched up with a green belt. We're not sure if it's coming back, but our school said we should be starting up Brazilian Jiujitsu as a replacement.

I'm only a yellow belt in judo, as I didn't really want to go for belts when I was younger. But now that I'm sixteen, I'll have to go for a senior white. I took it for fitness and also for the fact my friends are obsessed with it. I might also be going back to my kick-boxing club, as I can now train there because of my age, though I'm not sure if it counts as a MA. Also have done some Brazilian Sambo (not sure if it's actually called that), which was actually a lot of fun.

I've also done self-defense calsses that included some martial arts, i.e. how to stop someone with a knife, get them to the ground (with or without you), and how to reverse a hold or choke.

Sagat, what's jiujitsu like? I've heard all this stuff about it being very similar to judo. Do you use weapons in it? Like katanas and all that jazz.

Well, I used to take martial arts, but I had to leave because I moved, but I'm thinking of getting back into it. I took kajukenbo, which is an odd form of martial arts. Ka stands for karate, ju stands for judo and jujitsu, ken stands for kendo, and bo stands for kick boxing. It was such an interesting art too o.o. I made it all the way to a first degree black belt, but I quit soon after. My mom sorta forced for self-defense, but then I grew to like it ^^!

Lily it depends on the style of JJ taken. This should help clear up things:

Brazilian JJ made by Gracie - Very simple to learn and pick up, very effective, focuses on essential ground movements. Lacks depth and advanced and more complicated moves.

Traditional JJ - Very effective, focuses on ground grappling, standing grappling, joint locks, throws and counters. Also includes weapons such as sticks (like Kali somewhat), sword, bo staff. The one gigantic con is the immense learning curve and time it takes to master it.

MMA JJ - Similar to Brazilian JJ and Traditional. They sort of took the good parts from both, the ground and standing, and threw in some joint manipulations. The con is that it can not use the best of the traditional because it's the jack of all trades, master of none style.

The militarized version of JJ is similar to the MMA JJ but with fatal moves.

Thanks Sagat for the explanition, I'm very sure we'll be doing Traditional JJ, weapons were mentioned to us, and I don't think we'll be doing MMA JJ. I'm very sure we'll be really focusing on the hand combat, throws and counters. We may do bo staff once or twice, but I really don't think our school would like us using weapons.
You only really learn there's an art to falling after doing MA.

Sagat, curious. Do you do iron ___/hard bone training at all? I know it's a shaolin concept but meh.

No iron shirt/palm training. We do a bit at Goju but that's about it.

Sagat if you want to start iron forearm or iron shin training, here's a way to start. My friend is just godly....
