Wii question

In our house are 3 PCs, all connected to the Internet. At least two of us download things onto the PCs, one via a Web browser and a torrent program, the other mostly via a Web browser (P2P & torrent programs are rarely turned on by me).

If we were to get an Internet connection that has a 40 GB download limit, would a Wii set up with WiiConnect24 combined with the 3 PCs use up the download limit?

Miscommunication error...I mean as in will I go over the limit? I don't download much, but I do play games over the 'net. As for the other PC, no idea how much is downloaded on there...

Well, 40 gig is a high limit, and unless you use a lot of p2p, trafic generally doesn't rise that much. For example, I used to play World of Warcaft a lot, and our trafic was even lower then when I didn't, because to play WoW, I turned of all my p2p connections.

This means World of Warcraft had a far lower datastream then my p2p.

Will you go over the limit? Well, first you should check how far to the limit you ususally get. Plus, its a wise idea to shut of any p2p programs running while playing online, wether with a PC or Wii, as p2p eats bandwith like crazy.

It is unlikely that the Wii wil have a higher datastream then, say, Call of Duty? So if you can play games like that and do not reach the limit, I don't expect the Wii to do so. Think of it like this: Nintendo aims for large audiences, would they ruin their online gameplay by making sure the datastreams are so high, that data limits are reached? I doupt it.

If your regularely play online, and don't reach the data limit, you can play the Wii online just the same.

The Wii doesn't use that much data so far, aside from the updates. I don't expect actual gaming will use a whole lot more.

Really, if you don't commonly go over the limit with 3 PC's, you most likely won't go over the limit just by adding a Wii.

The only time it does MAJOR downloads I *THINK* are updates and if you purchase the nostalgic games. Stay away from that and you'll be fine

well, i think online games on average use 10mb an hour (this was taken from a FPS survey which included CS, CS:S HLDM HL2DM and UT2004)

thats with constant playing without map downloads and updates...
but personaly, i think ull be right man, we have a 12gb limit with 2 PCs and a laptop connected to it and its only ever gone over 2wice...

Non-Wii related question now, how do I monitor how much is downloaded through my connection, bearing in mind my router is a store bought one and not a home built one (wonder if the LRP distro has support for wireless connections...)

Short answer, with that setup, you can not.

However, you may be able to find a third party firmware upgrade for your router that is able to monitor the amount of bandwidth. But you'd probably be better off with a home built one.

SNES cartridges had a 4 Mb size constraint (6 Mb with some tinkering), so (i also *THINK*) that unless the graphics have been retrofitted to high-definition quality, I hardly see how they could be any major size concern (unless you buy them in bulk quantities).
