The thing about dialects

You are probably reading this and thinking, "What is the point of this", but sure enough, the point will come through.

We all speak a dialect, whether it be a dialect of English, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, French, or heck even Icelandic! Back to the point of this topic. What language is your mother tongue(or in other words, your primary language) and what Dialect do you speak of it? If you are an English speaker, look up "English Language" on wikipedia and scroll down to dialects to find yours. For the other languages, I have found looking up the language usually has the dialects listed.

To repeat myself, what is your primary language and what dialect do you speak of it? For you bilingual/trilingual/multilingual people, feel free to to list them. To start things off, I'll start with myself...

My primary language is English. I speak a midwestern Dialect, or more specifcally, A Minnesotian one, because I am in fact, from Minnesota. An interesting thing is that I cannot say the word "yeah" I say Ya or Yah. And most people think we say "Yah sure ya betcha" all the time....it's not true. I use it sometimes, but not all the time. i speak english... it's the only language i speak fluently(i'm taking spanish in school-been taking it for 4 years)
well anyway i speak southern english, specifically coastal southeastern i guess because i live in georgia... and yes i do say y'all sometimes

uh i talk english and am learning japanese but i often slur word together and talk in a russain acsent(sp) because its fun...but i have dislexia (sp?) too so i often switch words and letters around like once i said we cock you bross (we broke your cross) its funny how i switch thing especly when it sound really weird and wrong

Ha. Although I don't recall what I sounded like, I'm sure I had a Canadian dialect before moving to Washington, but after that I lost the "eh" and started changing how I say "route" and "roof".

My friends were talking about that, actually. Just said that I have no accent of any kind, even though English is technically my second language and I wasn't born in this area, but you could never tell. I have a very local dialect, I guess. My friend Jasmin says me and my sister talk the exact same way.

English is my...let me rephrase that American English is my primary language and I've usually a typical midwestern accent. Though I can do the lovely Texas Twang and other southern accents.

I've no idea what accent I possible have when speaking other languages...I rather think I probably sound much like the yank I am when speaking.

I tend to mimic (unconsciously) the speech patterns of others. When reading Chaucer you'll find my speech has changed...when talking to my friends down south...you better believe you'll be hearing the same accent reflected back. I've never successfully done this on purpose cos I tend to get flustered.

My native language is Swedish, and I guess I speak a northern dialect, though the city I've grown up in has a lot of influx of people from other regions, watering the dialect down, so what I speak sounds like a mix of all sorts of Swedish.

There are some people, living just a couple of miles away with a very prominent dialect (to the point where they have their own grammatical rules and use different pronouns.)

woo Minnesotan english!! Actually, my Minnesotan accent is not that strong. Maybe because I was highly influenced by my family's southern accident growing up. You can tell I grew up in minnesota though, because sometimes I elongate my "o"s.

As for my other language, my Japanese is usually Tokyo dialect, but I have picked up a bit of Gunma dialect due to living there for a couple years.

Japanese is my primary language. English is my secondary. I don't have your typical "English accent" when I speak english..like most Japanese people do. I guess I talk with a slight suthun accent..and many people have mistaken me for a "white girl", when they talk to me on the phone. I say things like "Ya'all" and "Heah" (for 'Here'). My dialect is really just a down-home suthun kind from Georgia.

I don't say things like "I like flied lice.." that's gross, first of all, and I detest it when people would come up to me and say in a very slow-kind of tone, "Do you understand english..and can you speak it?"

I always reply with: "yeah...I'm from Earth, Tonto..and Jackie Chan is NOT my brother."

Personally, I don't really fit in just one dialect. I grew up as a kid around lots hispanics. So a bit of spanglish there. Then middleschool-ish is when I came in contact with more blacks. That when the "Gangsta" slang and stuff became somewhat popular around here. Really weird mix really. I grew up in Texas but I don't talk like that all the time. Sure..I ya'll all the time but that's cause I don't like the sound of saying you guys. I have a tendency to say "yesh shir." I don't know where that came from. I like going around saying "Hey peoples, what sup"

I'm just plain weird. I guess my dialect would be called "Southern American Texas Dallas Gangsta-ish Improper English." My english teachers would kill me if they heard how I talk outside their classes. I'm glad they don't

We hardly have any accent, and I speak as grammatically correct as possible.

Since I live close to Italy, and I also know Italian language (my 2nd language) I usually speak in a mix of both languages xD Tho, my dialect would be Istrian (a dialect of the Littoral group) xD
I also know some of the Venetian dialect ^_^;;;
Then, there's English as my 3rd language ^^;

My second language (English) is pretty interesting. I've (obviously) got a Swedish accent, which for an example makes me say "yob" instead of "job", though I don't say "yaah" instead of "yes" like some German villain in a cheesy action movie though.

I mix my English quite a lot, I use a hefty mix of British and North American terms (though most of the time I use NA spelling.)

My primary language is german, I have ermm.. somekind of bavarian dialect, but not too much. In school I'm learning French and Britain English, and here in chat and on the internet, I'm learning American English.
On Christmas I'll get an dutch course, cause Im gonna get to Netherlands when Im 18.

pssst - American isn't a language, just like Argentinean isn't a language. It's a nationality. Americans speak their own dialect English, and Argentineans speak their own dialect of Spanish.

USA is a big country. Has different dialects for different regions.

Anyways, I speak english, that's my primary language.

English is my native language, but it's American English and the Mid-west to be more specific.

In French I speak with an Alsacien accent and dialect. Likewise, I also speak German with an French accent, but what was considered High German is the closest the dialect would fall under.

I am not sure what my Japanese sounds like other than it imitates what I have heard, most of which has come from the Central prefectures in Japan.

I know a multitude of languages, blame it on me being a fan of The Amazing Race, I pick up languages from them! Here's the dialects I know:

*English (Asian English, though I speak it like an American, having grown up in an English-speaking house)

*Filipino (Yes, I AM one, for those who are wondering.)

*Chabacano (mostly due to my boyfriend's influence, this is far South in Mindanao, around Basilan and Zamboanga! And the thing is, I know a LOT of curses. Hehehe.)

*Japanese (Otaku-ism, of course)

*Chinese (but only the curses and some simple words... blame it on a Chinese-English dictionary and my Chinese side of the family)

*Spanish (again, due to teh Amazing Race, heck, I'm going to be taking Spanish as a subject in 3rd-year college next year!)

*French (read the explanation^ teehee)

*Italian (due to the translator I'm using... as well as my explanation on Spanish)


God knows how many more I can speak, I just forgot them!
