Default Which game has the best storyline?

As for me, no doubt about Xenogears has the best storyline ever. The only one game, I think, which can compete with Xenogears is Metal gear, but still, XENOGEARS is first! Who have fully understand its storyline will understand me

Xenogears had an awesome storyline, but I have to go with Star Ocean 2:The Second Story, it was amazing.

My option is Final Fantasy III or Chrono Trigger... The best storylines are often from Square-Enix ^^

This question can't just be decided like that. It's a matter of personal opinion. And in my opinion, KOTOR.

Yes! KOTOR was better than FF lightsaber swinging, Sith killing, plot twisting goodness.

Oh, and Pong. "But Opinionated, Pong dudn't have a plot." Ah-HAH! That's where you're wrong! Pong does have a plot. It's just so sublte and complex your brain cannot identify it.

Well, since this is a total opinion, then I'm gonna have to go with Elder Scrolls Oblivion.

Other then how the storyline ended, it was pretty unpredictable (In the good way of course).

I absolutely love the story for Fire Emblem games, each one so far has been really good, the best for me though so far is Path of Radiance.

I absolutely loved the games Golden Sun, and Golden Sun The Lost Age for Game Boy Advance. They were outstanding! Where you had to go around collecting djinni making your abilities, spell's and skill's stronger. The leveling system was not to difficult, nor to easy which made it a great all around game. I have also heard the same for Fire Emblem, that it is sort of similar in that way. The story line's of both game's were well designed in my opinion. I have heard that the story line in Tales of Symphonia was incredible too. However I have not played the game. I have only seen picture's, and review's about the game.

Any story without a selfjustifed impossibly "always correct " superhuman hero is a good story; Therefore, this disqualifies alot of the most popular games. =(

It may follow some typical RPG cliches, but I enjoyed Tales of Symphonia's storyline. I would say that Final Fantasy X has my favorite story. Knights of the Old Republic has a great storyline, too, as mentioned above.

Oblivion is pretty sandboxish. Not as much one story as a number of stories. You're refering to the whole Blades story I assume?

Anyways, as for my favorite storyline: Deus Ex. You just can't beat how well written it is.

Final Fantasy VI had a better story than any of the other Final Fantasy games..

Does this reflect that your screen name is cloud strife, your location is Nimblung.. etc..(Honestly, Squaresoft needs more orignal names for their summons and locations, can't even start an conversation about Shiva without someone saying " You mean the summon from final fantasy?!" anyway)

Something bothered me about this topic, how come no one has mentioned any other of the countless number of games ( with the exception of the most recent and overrated.) that graced the systems in the past and present?

Not much was said about Metal Gear.
    Not a whisper of Vanguard.
Vandal Hearts.,Tactics Orge .Kodelka, lions and tigers oh my!
Not a soul mentioned Phantasy Star (not the online one)
Not even a hint of Breath of Fire!
Where's the love for Jumping Flash?
The comedic exploits of Kendo Rage, forgotten.
Beyond Good and Evil is beyond notice.
Not even a howdy do towards Duke Nukem or S.C.U.D.

I applaude the lack of interest in videogames in general.

I'd say it's because you chose games without good storylines, aside from Tactics Ogre, but even that requires you to like tactics games, which most people don't like.

    In my opinion...

The first Kotor had a great story. It had a lot of unexpected plot twists, and things you expected to happen, didn't. On top of that, two diffrent endings to give you a little more freedom.

Also, star ocean: till the end of time had a pretty good story. I've never played the others, but I wasn't expecting our entire existance to be reduced to something as simple as a TV program for another dimension.

I've played a lot of these, and more importantly I've noticed that mose of these are RPGs. In my experience, after one plays so many RPGs, you'll end up lacking in exposure to plotlines. Even though RPGs have the most outlandish plots, everything's been done and redone. :\

Get someone to set you up the bomb with Conker's Bad Fur Day. I love RPGs, but the story to this action/adventure game was far more comical than anything I've ever experienced, period.

What's not to like about a complex storyline such a Metal Gear that extends from it's own fictional universe, to the real world and back?

Most of these "RPGs" as they call them feature characters that express no real emotion, they're always right, no matter what happens, no matter how many people they kill or harm, they are the good guys.
Even as Snake said" Who said were the good guys?"

Example: So it's okay for the main characters in Final Fantasy games to run around slaughtering people and monsters all because they believe they're right, but it's not okay for someone else who is doing the same exact thing ( the main villians) while not killing the same number of people. Meanwhile, the badguy shows remorse, while the heros, simply kill and keep killing not stopping to even contemplate what they've done, sure they whine, but no "We walked a bloody road to get here.." it's more like
"You killed only the only 2 people we care about and we've killed about 10,000 people and we do not care! Now! It's your turn!"

I don't pick "bad' games. I pick games that offer more than a plot that holds your hand and guides you through every little god damned aspect of the game.

What is the point of playing a game with a noninteractive storyline? You're not really "playing it" , you're just.. Pushing a button, reading the text, pushing the button, reading the text.

    Put it like this:
Self contained games, should be mallable.
Then. The Middle Ground. Games that do both, to some extent.
Games that branch out, should not be mallable.
    This is not absolute, example.

The Suffering, you can play through game four possible ways to get four possible distinct endings. The suffering 2 continues the game (if you have the memory card data) from your choice of actions. Good. Evil. Neutral. Insane.

This is the PERFECT example of how a mallable game should be. It's up to you

    Metal Gear Solid, 1 , 2 and 3.
This is the middle ground of mallable/shapable games.
You can play the game anyway you want, stealthy, run and gun.
Your actions will change events of the game, but not the overall ending.
You can change the events leading to the ending , such as killing the End without honestly fighting him.
It also breaks the 4th Wall numerous times,by taunting the player, talking directly to the player or doing something requires additional player action (checking the back of the CD case..) something that neither the first type or the latter type tend to do often, if at all.

Final Fantasy 1 through X. You have no choice over the storyline. You cannot play through the game anyway you choose. Your actions will have the same outcome if not a very little impact on the storyline. You cannot affect the ending nor the events leading to the ending. The story will always be the same no matter how many times you play through it.

Final Fantasy X2, Mallable and not mallable at the same time. You can control part of the events, not all of them, and you can even skip events all together!
The story changes, but the three possible endings are not dependant on normal story factors.

Was not the whole thing of role playing games to assume the role of a character and act them out on your own accord? Like the old fashion table top?

If I wanted to simply read text and not have any control over the storyline, I'd read a book or I'd simply rent a DVD and turn on the subtitles. I like -control-, that's the point of playing the videogame, not to be spoonfed instructions! Or I'd invest in those horrid interactive DVDs for the same affect, or possibly join an Army Bootcamp.

This is not Soviet Russia, videogames do not play YOU.
