universal balance

I was wondering if anyone believes in 'universal balance'. By that I mean do you believe that for every good thing that happens something bad happens as well, even if the 2 events are unrelated that bad things and good things are always in perfect balance. I personally think that everything does 'balance out' in this way mostly becuase of personal experience e.g. until recently I always felt that someone 'up there' didn't like me, nothing ever went my way, but just recently I've had a number of 'lucky breaks', I've now found out that since my life started looking up my friends life had become a living hell, it seems to me either everything is in balance or I'm predestined to only be happy to the detriment of others. So what I'm asking is: do you believe that good and bad, clever and stupid, rigt and wrong etc. etc. are in constant balance?

What you mean karma? Yeah i guess a part of me does but then again i beleive that everything happens by chance.

I tend to believe that things eventually get good after they were bad. But things get worse before they get better. That's why when things really aren't going my way I believe that it can only get better.

If not, well I guess it can only get better from there. Unless I die I guess.

I believe in an "universal balance" like Yin and Yang. It's like nature balance. Like a chain of events....one depends on the other.

I believe that the second law of thermodynamics can be applied to things other than energy. It can be interpeted that with time, things [entropy] move towards a balance [the maximum of the system].

These are all very interesting theories, but I have a different idea on how life and the universe works.

The idea of Karma is a very wholesome philosophy, and I believe we would all benefit if everyone lived like they believed in it. But I just haven't seen enough evidence to support such a theory. There are people who get to the top, and they do it by climbing up and knocking other people down, without a second thought. (Just watch any reality show where people get kicked off, you'll see the same attitude) Out in the corporate world, this is common, and rewarding. I don't agree with it, and it frustrates me to see this.

However, I also don't believe that "Nice guys finish last" either. Call it Karma or Universal Balance, but people do recognize when someone is falling behind because they are helping other people. And there are enough people to help each other get ahead for the right reasons. (i.e. in the corporate world, because they are good at the job rather than good at making others look worse) Ultimately, I think you need to maintain a balance in yourself. Make your goals, and achieve them, but don't hurt others on your way up.

But no, I haven't seen any evidence that there is some force maintaining a balance between "good" and "evil", especially since these terms are quite often very subjective.

Hmmm...I 'Somewhat' agree on what 'outsider' had said. Too do good you must do bad or For every good there is evil? But what I believe is that its the peoples choice to decide what is good or bad for them, they shouldnt care if its bad or good for someone else. Thats the rules in our corporate world. Everything for yourself even if it means hurting or destroying someone elses life....

I'm sure that the number of good things that happen are close to the number of bad things, but I don't beleive that one effects the other.

I suppose you could look at it like this.

If you wanted to look at the good side of every bad thing that happens, I suppose you might establish a feeling of universal balance. I, however, do not beleive that the good has a direct effect on the bad or visa versa.

I've never felt a real need to believe in one way the universe must work. I intend to write fiction, however, and to further that goal I like learning as much theory as I can, including karma, christian philosophy, catholicism, and muslim doctrine (That's a depressing one, btw), among others. But learning about them is different from believing in them. So many different ways of thinking get bunched up together, and you're left with a hodgepodge of interesting ideas, and no one single philosophy. I guess in part I believe in karma, that what goes around comes around. But I don't believe in other things that are connected to the idea of universal balance, such as reincarnation.

I agree and disagree, but I'll try to keep it short and not delve too much into my spiritual beliefs. I do believe the potential for "good" and "ill" is inside all life. Like seeds waiting to grow if they are fostered correctly. However, I believe that good and evil only exist on this level of existance and thus I do not see that there is necessarily a balance. Things simply are as they are and that is as it should be. In other words, I don't believe in good and evil but I see a choice in every action and thought that will give energy to the intention behind it. But that's just my personal beliefs.
