Windows Live Messenger - Anyone got problems?

Well I'm posting this because the Microsoft forums are crap and I'll probably get better help from here.

I'm unsure about this but I heard Windows Live (MSN 8.0) is out its beta stage and is a finished product. If it isn't, then this might just be pointless but anywho.

Last night my sister installed it. I realised this when I logged on last night. I thought "Hey cool, she installed Live Messenger. Let's see what it does."

Bugger thing doesn't work.

Firstly. It wouldn't even sign in the first five tries. It said it was, just it just got stuck on that 'signing in' part.

Secondly: when it DID work I got some lame error message. I can't remember what it is because I only got it once. But then...

My contact list was empty. EMPTY.
My name was like this: ||\\|p . or something like that.
It told me above where my 120 odd contacts should have been 'Due to a connection problem, changes you make might not be applied to other computers you use'.

After fifteen attempts to get it to work I managed to get it to load with 7 CONTACTS. All of them people I never speak to.

Basically, I want to know if anyone has had this problem where Live Messenger is just not working like it should. I ran the connection test, tested my UCP/TCP/etc. and it gave me no errors. My sister claims she has no problems with it (though I hacked her email and checked and she does, though her contact just all show up).

It isn't my email address either. I tested it with both my usual Yahoo email and a Hotmail one. And to be certain of this, I may add, 7.5 worked fine when I put it back on.

I really need to get the screenshot again. I really do want to upgrade to Live, but it just doesn't work.

Feedback on this, suggestions and comments from people with similar problems who have solved it will be a great help. I will take screenshots later on when I get home if, after I install it myself, I still get some problems with it.

wow O.o you mentioned this on sotm thread and now wow...

okies...yeah i had the same problems..the thing wouldn't let me sign in!
saying my pop up blocker was stopping it..but get this..my pop up thing wasn't on yet!
weird...ill give ya advice Mac, uninstall it and find messenger 7.5 again..that one is the most faithful i've found.
Or unless someone knows how to fix it.

I was using MSN Messenger 7.5 beforehand and after giving up on trying to sort out Windows Live In reinstalled it.

It has never let me down.

I just want to upgrade to Live but unless the whole program is screwy I'm going to have to wait.

The thing wouldn't let me sign in until I restarted my computer but after that it has worked fine for me.

Yeah, the MSN Live on my laptop has been doing that lately, 3 days now. Some of my contacts appear as "/===" something like that. It just stays on the sign-in status for like over 10mins, getting a error message saying ''error on connecting" very odd.

The MSN Live on my desktop computer sometimes has that sign-in problem, but not to often though. It normally works fine and signs into Live messenger ok as my windows starts up.

I don't know, it could be just some temporary thing, before it worked fine on my laptop. Now it decides for itself when to work or not =S.

It seems that my sister just sucks with installing software. Right now I reinstalled it and it works fine. No error messages, nothing.

That was what I was getting. Odd, no? Down at the bottom I highlighted over the MSN icon not my Net.

If someone makes sense of this and can figure it out in case it decides to own itself on reboot and screw me over, then I'd appreciate it.

for the record, I have about 120 contacts so. o_0; 7. Is awkward.

I got Windows Live Messenger when it appeared and since then I haven't had any problems with it. Maybe it was just your internet screwing you over

Dude.....you were freaking complaining bout it but I didn't know you so hate it and had to post it...and like I said earlier..USE TRILLIAN!!it has MSN,YIM,AIM and ICQ(properly MIRC but not sure) all in one program!it doesn't have any error and it NEVER fails to log in..>_>...and I just download Windows Live Messenger and install it....I got the problem like all of you...at first I thought it was just me...but NOW I'm sure it's the program that HAS the problem...use MSN beta or Trillian...that's my advice..<_<

The program is buggy, most likely. I think it depends upon how it's installed, as I'm not sure if my sister uninstalled 7.5 beforehand.

I think you're supposed to install it over the old MSN you're using. From the other sites I've seen installing Live after uninstalling an earlier version screws it over. o_O;

Anyways it seems fine now, and Rina, I heard Trillian doesn't let you enter into messages with people - they have to message you before you can talk. Is that an urban myth?

Yes, Mac, it's an urban myth. You can start conversations with people on Trillian. If you couldn't, it wouldn't be much of a chat program, now would it?

mah, Trillian has it's goods and bads ... I do use it cuz I don't want separate programs for each messaging system. Tho, sometimes it eats quite a lot of memory, it doesn't support the latest MSN special stuff, (special emoticons, animations, and whatever) but to tell the truth, why do you need it ^_^;

lol i posted something like this months ago. Windows live Messenger beta is crap, its full of bugs and few are the computers that actually run it withou a world of problems. We have to wait for the full version of it, until then unninstall it completely, reinstall msn messenger 7.0 and reboot the computer. U may have to reboot it more than once actually.

I'm using it right now and not getting any problems with it any more. It must have been my sister just screwing it over when she installed it.

I heard it was finished, but am still unsure whether it's still Beta or not. I'm pretty sure it's a finished product, however crappy its installing might be.
