courage is doing something your afraid to do,so there can be no courage with out fear right?

also has anyone here ever been in combat?(i have not),i have heard and read stories of these brave men who in training said things like "bring them on!" and "im afraid of nothing!" experience thier first time under fire and drop thier weapons and curl up into a shell and shake,and to cry out for thier mothers,did everyone do this thier first time in combat? no,did they stop doing this after they had seen what it was like in combat? most did,im not trying to say everyone is afraid to die in combat,im just saying you could get blown up(in this "battle")while in the fetal position crying out for your mother,is that a way to go out?

No, haven't been able to actually experiance it yet, but from the stories I've read and the veterans I've talked to, the whole curling up in a ball thing seems to be pretty rare.

White Wolf, the fact that people have a mental breakdown during thier first time being shot at is rare, but it does happen.

The soldiers these days are conditioned to have no distinct thoughts of fear on the battle field, to avoid a fast fallout of the troop's constitution.

That's why they tell people to have strong will power when joining the army.

I'm fine with either one of them. I'm going to die some day but if I am going to try to make a difference will I be lying in a hospital bed waiting for it to happen. I would prefer to die fighting for what I believe in but that probably won't happen.

One of the guys here was a good soldier in ordinary circumstances. When he was in Afghanistan his vehicle was hit by an RPG .. he curled into a ball inside the Coyote while his buddies lept out and counter-attacked. After that he got PTSD.

So everyone reacts differently. Those who act tough and talk tough and say how they would kill everyone are usually liars - sometimes there is the odd one that is well, deep down crazy and actually does kill all the enemies in a bloodfest but that's even rarer.

That's the purpose of training. You do realistic drills over and over and over again until you are desensitized and no longer really care as much when it comes to the real thing.

Peacefully, I want a little reflective time when I die, basically I want to experiance it. Think about it, while I do believe in a life after death I'm not closed off to the possibility that I may just stop existing. So just in case it really is the last thing I want to make sure I am able to atleast savor my last few moments.

It kind of depends on the circumstances. If it was a good cause...nah. I'd pretty much ruin everything thanks to my cowardice. If it was a pointless battle, well what's the point? I'd rather be called a coward and die in bed then die in battle, but that's just me.

Joining the Air Force somehow equals dying in battle 100%? Man get a clue kid. Even the friggen Marines in Falluja or Ramadi don't have that percentage.

By the way - if you were to die in say, Iraq, you would be just another death of the day with the rate being KIA over there.

I really don't see how anyone would want to go out peacefully. Battle or not, just suddenly and silently dying is kinda depressing to think of.

I'd rather bleed out or suffocate, something a little bit slower and maybe even painful. I would want to know I'm about to die before I actually check out. As for reasons, I really don't give a !#%^, we're all gonna die some day, it doesn't matter what you die for. If you died trying to live for something, maybe. But dying for "something" is stupid.

Well, if you can't see why people don't want to die in the heat of battle, you might just ask yourself, "Am I one of those 'boring' people?" The way I see it, you only die once, so make it count. I think I'd like to go out while spraying lead at the infidels and then being swallowed by a flame-thrower.

I would like to die in a samurai war. I would like to be remembered for being a great warrior and die fighting off as many as I could while out numbered. Lil dramatic but hey, thats my fantasy death.
