Ban dihydrogen monoxide?

A very dangerous chemical by the name of dihydrogen monoxide has been found in close proximity to homes, schools, even hospitals. Dihydrogen monoxide has been known to be lethal when inhaled, and can cause vomiting, or even a lethal sodium imbalance when excessively ingested - it can cause severe burn injuries in is gasseous form, and has been found in the body of everything between cancer patients to heart attack victims.

Recently, there has been a growing awareness of this vicious chemical, and even petitions supporting a ban of it. What is your thoughts on this?

Well, if it is dangerous, we should probably ban it. However, I'd like to know why we have it there in the first place and what purpose it served us before we discovered the danger in it. Was it just there naturally, or did we use it in those areas? What did we use it for?

If anyone can give me some background, it'd be much appreciated.

I just had to lend and a those a hand who didnt have chemistry yet. And while its easy to make fun of those who dont know a compound with a molecular mass of 18 and a weight density of 1 gram/cm³, a pkA of 15,9 and a pH of 7, some are kinda like "omfg, jo0 ruined da j0ke, shame on u". Aint it sad?

You people treat this as a funny joke on stupidity, but really, I think it's a prime demonstration of how the science community finds patterns where there isn't one, or where they're missing information.

Back to some of the earlier days of medicine, when the healers thought that blood was bad, and that the leeches were saving your life. This sort of thing is why you should always do your own research before taking up arms against every little thing that people want to blame for all the world's problems. Never take the word of the bumbling idiot who comes around spouting facts out of context and missing information.

And most of all, especially don't trust the bumbling idiot who finds it funny to mimic people who don't know any better, and is trying to pit you all against water.

That last comment... it almost brought tears to my eyes. "pit you all against water." That is gold. Anyway, this is ruined, so I think it's spam now.

Just to clarify:

Dihydrogen + Monoxide
(Di =2) (Mono =1)
Therefore it's:
2 Hydrogen (H2) + 1 Oxygen (O1)

H2 + O1 = H2O

...Simple chemistry, just get to know the prefixes and it'll all be good ... also, know that water is H2O and know what "H" and "O" represent.

Obviously if it is a potentially dangerous substance, it should be rid of where possible.

But to be quite honest, this appears to me as yet another way of further cotton-wraping our little lives; everything's a risk these days. It's ridiculus, for example: one minute sunshine is good for you, next minute it isn't.

A well-known phrase:
"...A little dirt is good for you..."

In other words, contact with all these "harmful" substances will most likely not affect you at all - in some cases it may even help strengthen your immune system.

In my opinion - I couldn't care less if dihydrogen monoxide present in my home, but if people genuinly fear this substance - who am I question them?

I found this funny, but I wonder if people actually bought into it. But I'm aware of the periodic table and science.

However, this trick was really funny and even used on national television. Does anyone watch Penn & Teller: BS? They did a show on environmentalists. Anyways, they were passing around a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide, getting environmentalists to sign it. They just said it's a chemical that big companies use and expose to children. And then they got over 200 signatures of environmentalists in agreement to ban the substance. Funny, no?
