The fifth book totally rocked!! All the Harry Potter books rock. I haven't read one I didn't like yet, but no it shouldn't be a crime. Honestly I don't think J.K. Rowling minds you burning them too much. I mean a guy walks into a store asks for about one-hundred copies for a big bonfire, multiply that by the number of psycho evangelic nut jobs out there and ole' J.K. is making quite a profit.
    Show your work.

    8(2x+3x-15)+2=7+19
    8(5x-15)+2=26
    40x - 120 + 2 = 26
    40x - 118 = 26
40x=I saw what you did with that thirteen year old.

Burning almost anything isn't a crime, as long as you go about it right. I say almost anything as I don't want someone asking me if it's okay to burn homemade napalm, people, animals, etc....

Well, if you buy a book, technically, you can burn it, rip it, throw it in a pool, or whatever the heck you want to do with it. It's your book.

I've personally never burned a book; if I dislike a book, I just don't read it again. Simple as that.

And I liked the fifth Harry Potter book. I can't think of a valid reason to burn a book you spend $20.00-something on; that's a waste of money. And if you borrowed it from a friend or the library, then it's not yours. So don't burn it.

It's okay to burn horrible books. I think I burned one about a few weeks ago.

Now that I'm done laughing - it's not illegal to burn certain things. As long as the fire is controlled, and it's in a safe place, you can burn almost anything. Otherwise you'd get in trouble every time you start a bonfire, a campfire, etc.

As for your comment on arson...

"Although arson fires are referred to as incendiary, not all incendiary fires are considered arson, the difference being malicious intent." Source

I doubt burning a book would count as malicious intent, unless you burnt the books in someone elses house and left it to burn.

Though, local laws could prohibit fires, this ban on fire would probably be due to extremely high risks for forest fires or similar.

The Nazis burned those books because they were as corrupted and modifyied as the Bible is.
Personally, i didn't read any Harry Potter books, but i guess that is your oppinion, miss Honeybee Ai, if it sucks. I've watched some of the movies in cimena and i've enjoyed them... when i was 14.
But, like Ali-G used to say: "...i think it was veery childish. And if you're watching this, Potter, i iz better than you. You iz probably even slept with a girl. I slept with three."

Okay I need to rephrase what I said. It's not a crime to burn the "books". The burning part is illegal unless you file the right paperwork and get clearance for it. As long as you get the correct paperwork for the fire it's freedom of speech and is and should be legal so long as nobody is forced to participate or anything of that nature.

I personally don't burn entire books, but other things yeah. ____ and I once burned a magazine subscription, but it was under control of course. We did it in the sink and had our hands on the lever in case it was needed. After that though, I realized burning paper was a waste, and that we should try to keep as many natural resources as safe as we can.

Burning a huge pile of books is know better than burning a tree.

Why would you burn a book in the first place? I understand that some hardcore religious people dislike Harry Potter and burn it because the characters use magic (I wonder what these people think of Disney). I believe it is fine to burn a book. But then again, consider the opposite. If I were to whip out a copy of the Bible and set that ablaze, I can guarantee you right now that I would be chewed before it was turned to ash. Again, I would have no problem with this. It is just words on paper. I would be more upset about wasting the money that one used to buy the book.

It's pretty wasteful to burn a book.. even if it doesn't appeal to you, you can always donate it to your local library or to a charity. There are so many places in the world where they would be so happy to have that book; any book... So although burning it is something you have the right to do, it seems almost immature to me. I don't like baseball... but if I spent money and bought balls and a bat and burned it I end up with ashes. If I buy balls and a bat and give them to an elementary school, suddenly I'm giving children something to do outside that might keep them away from more dangerous activity. I guess it's all in the perspective of thing.

Burning books is not freedom of speech.... since there is no actual speaking involved. Though, it's your property, what you do with it is your buissnes and your buissness alone (except if you reprint it, then it's copyright infringement).

You certainly never need to fill out any papers to burn stuff where I live (unless it's tires or something other dangerous, in which case it's forbidden). Naturally the fire has to be in a controlled environment, but otherwise you're free. But as I said earlier, depends on your local laws I guess.

Regarding book burning: I may dislike your reasons for burning a book, but I defend your right to burn them.

The stupid part about the whole thing is that they burn Potter books because they claim they teach witchcraft in them. Which is both incorrect and just plain silly, but most of the nation [including myself] is fine with it, either because of Free Speech or they think the book-burners are correct.

But if I were to burn a stack of Bibles at a demonstration due to the Messages of Hate* in them, I would be vilified. This is, in case anyone is wondering, the easiest way to get on TV. Just burn a stack of Bibles in a public place after announcing your intention to do so and you’re News at 11.

Yes I know the Bible, taken as a whole with the Christian emphasis on the New Testament doesn’t really advocate hate. However, this interpretation of the Bible is roughly as correct as Potter = Witchcraft Manual.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

It shouldn't have to be a freedom of speech thing, it's your books, you should be able to destroy them if you so feel like it.

Lot's of things are Free Speech. It just has to be a political act that doesn't directly harm anyone or leak Secrets of the State. Any use of any bodily fluid you can think of has been cited as Free Speech, so I think the political ignition of literature by extremist groups should count too.
